Filles a Marier, Filles du Roi, Carignan-Salieres Regiment, Acadians, Hessians, French-Canadians, as well as Scots, English and Irish in Quebec. If you live in the Vancouver area or if you're going to be in the area, come and meet other researchers, and share your successes, brick walls and resources over a cup of coffee. There's a drop-in fee of $2.00 which goes towards purchasing Quebec resources (Drouin films, repertoires, other books, etc) which will be housed in the BCGS library. Remember to bring a mug, we'll have the coffee. If you'd like more information, please e-mail me. Also, I can forward directions on how to get to the BCGS Resource Centre. Greetings All. I have just spoken to Dan O'Donnell, the investigator in the Office of the Information Commissioner regarding our complaints against the Chief Statistician of Canada. The last time I spoke to him he indicated his best guess on when the response to our complaints would be forthcoming was 4 June 2004. Unfortunately we will have to wait a little longer. Mr. O'Connell indicated things are in the final stages and while he was unable to advise what that meant he now hopes that the reponses to our complaints will be available by mid to late June. He has promised to keep me apprised of any changes that might occur in this. While further delay is disappointing, so long as the end result is what we hope and expect we can afford to be patient for a little longer. On my recent trip to Calgary I had the opportunity to meet with Lois Sparling. Our legal action for the 1911 National Census is still on track. Our hearing in Federal Court is still scheduled for 8 June 2004 in Calgary. The only thing that will prevent the proceedings from going ahead would be if the government suddenly released the 1911 records. That is what happened when the 1906 records were released on 24 January 2003. I am not, however, holding my breath on that happening again. I do not expect a decision of the Court to be brought down on the day of the hearing. I suspect the Judge will reserve decision to have time to consider the arguments, pro and con, from each side. If the decision is based solely on the legislation we feel certain that we will win. Things being what they are, however, nothing is certain and we will have to wait and see what happens. Should we win we can probably expect the government to appeal the decision. If we lose, we will most certainly be appealing ourselves. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. I just came back from a Mediterranean cruise so I'm not sure if your query was answered. Jette who recorded Quebec genealogical events before 1731 shows two additional births to Antoine & Marie-Francoise: 1. Anonymous (stillborn) male died 27 Jan 1729 at Montreal 2. Nicolas born & baptized 17 May 1730 at Montreal. The free portion of the on-line PRDH at http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/en/ indicates the years of additional children of not necessarily "your" Rene baptized in Montreal after 1730. In addition a large number children of a (not necessarily "your") Rene were baptized between 1732 and 1760 at Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue". If you subscribe to PRDH for a modest fee you can get more details in specific events. But you before you do, you might look for baptisms where Marie-Francoise RIEL was mother. If you get years and places that agree with those that you got for Rene you can assume they are children of the couple. Jerry Lesperance, Aiea, Hawaii
To all:- The following background information has been forwarded by one of the subscribers and after checking, the data is very interesting. The information is being sent as received, minus the name -- but I have already sent her a note of thanks. Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Brampton, ON -- formerly Nova Scotia -- "just another vet" ======= [information forwarded as received] I found the following information on http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/newsroom/view_news_e.asp?id=1309 Web Site. Maybe it will save some of the Vets some time looking for information. For more information about the Chemical Warfare Agent Testing Recognition Program, see the backgrounder at http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/newsroom/view_news_e.asp?id=1308. For information about disability pension benefits for veterans, see the Veterans Affairs Canada backgrounder in the Press Room at http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/newsroom/view_news_e.asp?id=1310.
To all:- I listened intently and only heard the $24,000 one-time payment to veterans who had tested chemical agents -- not one word about what is in the following letter, unless in caucus or Hansard. Read it and save -- if a veteran!! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca =============================== May 25, 2004 Mrs. Muriel M. Davidson 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton, Ontario L6W 2R8 Dear Mrs. Davidson:- Thank you for your e-mail message regarding the $50 million compensation for volunteers who participated in chemicalagent warfare experiments. I regret the delay in responding. The soldiers who volunteered for and participated in chemical agent warfare experiments at Suffield or Ottawa between the 1940's and the 1970's dutifully served their country and provided the foundation for the development of Canada's response to the real and present threat of chemical warfare. The $50 million recognition program announced by the Canadian Government is an acknowledgement of their sacrifice and their service to Canada. You may be assured that the government's desire to offer recognition to these brave soldiers is sincere, as is its intent to prevent a recurrence of such experimentation. I am sorry to learn that you believe the $24,000 one-time payment offered to these Veterans is insufficient. This payment is in addition to any disability pension benefits to which they may be entitled. It is comparable to payments made by the government to other groups of Canadian Veterans such as the Merchant Navy Veterans, Aboriginal Veterans and certain Prisoners of War (POWs). Those payments were awarded for lost opportunity, suffering, hardship and, in the case of the POW's, slave labout and the length of incarceration. In response to your other concerns, I want to assure you that members of the Forces who participated in chemical testing are recognized as Veterans and are eligible for health care for their pensioned disabilities. Some may also be eligible for benefits under the Veterans Independence Program and for funeral and burial grants from the Last Post Fund. Please be assured that Veterans Affairs Canada provides services and benefits, including disability pensions and health care, to whose who suffer from service-related PTSD**. The Department has been developing a national network of operational stress injury clinics to provide standardized assessment, treatment, prevention and support to servingCanadian Forces members and Veterans Affairs Canada pensioners. Educational programs, as well as individual, group and family counselling are also available. I hope this information is helpful. Yours sincerely, The Honourable John McCallum, P.C., M.P. Minister of Veterans Affairs ==== PTSD = Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome -- To date more than 12 have been treated at Sunnybrook Veteran's Wing, all young men -- all have returned to their duties.
The new US WW-2 Memorial in Washington D.C. will be unveiled tomorrow. There is a web site, with search engine to help you find data on relatives that were Veterans and for those that made the ultimate sacrifice. http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=registry.asp&subpage=search

Greetings All. It seems that rather than downloading and collecting signatures on our NEW petitions, some people are still using the OLD ones. Please download and use the NEW petitions. The OLD petitions were worded in general terms and did not accomplish our goal. The NEW petitions are worded in very specific terms and leave no doubt whatsoever as to what we seek. It gives the wording of a single clause to be added to the Statistics Act that would ensure both the transfer of Historic Census records to the care and control of the National Archivist, and continued public access to all Historic Census records 92 years after collection. The suggested clause to be added to the Statistics Act has none of the conditions or restrictions that Bill S-13 had. Like Bill S-13, the OLD petitions are dead. Please download and use the NEW petitions when gathering signatures. As of today, there are two lines for the collectors of signatures to sign -- please do not write any other place on petitions unless the space is designated for a signature, name of country, or collector(s) of signatures. Remember, STREET addresses are not needed - City, Province, Postal Code. Thank you all for your support. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
