    1. Fw: Métis in Acadia
    2. Gary Boivin
    3. I was asked to forward this to lists. ----- Original Message ----- From: pierre m To: gboivin@telusplanet.net Sent: Wednesday, September 08, 2004 2:10 PM Subject: Métis in Acadia Hi, Gary Boivin Can you publish this message on the RootsWeb.com. Thank you... and excuse my english. The Metis in Acadia There were no French women to marry before 1634 in Acadia. The lords Gravé Dupont and Charles De Saint-Étienne de La Tour united themselves according to the Indian way to Natives in 1610. The men of their troops imitated them. France was chased out of Acadia in 1613. La Tour stayed there with the lord Biencourt and the men of their troop who were united to Natives. In 1627, La Tour wrote to Cardinal Richelieu that he had formed a Franco-Indian community which kept the territory for France. France returned to Acadia in 1634. Colonists of strictily French origin landed in Port-Royal between 1634 and 1650 (refer to the role of Saint-Jehan who identified 12 French couples). The French of Port-Royal and the lord Menou d'Aulnay attacked the Franco-Natives and their Metis children at Fort Saint-Jean (St. John) in 1645 in order to take control of the fur trade. They massacred 45 defenders, according to lord Nicolas Denys. Except for a few exceptions, their native women disappeared forever as well as their Metis children. In 1653, France is once again chassed from Acadia but the French colonists stay in place. France returned to Acadia in 1670 and processes a Census at Port-Royal in 1671. This census allowed the identification of colonists who were strictly of French origin having arrived between 1634 and 1650 and persons of francophone family names but of unkown origin. The past genealogists of Quebec were all at the service of the Canadian Catholic Church which denied the existence of Metis in Quebec, even declaring that they had all died before 1800. Due to the absence of acts, they wrongly presumed that the persons of unknown origin in Port-Royal in 1671 were French men and women who had landed in Acadia between 1653 and 1670, including Radegonde Lambert. Now, this is impossible since France did not send any French colonists in a territory occupied by the English colonists. These persons were therefore the Metis children and thir descendants who had survived the attack of Fort Saint-Jean in 1645 and who were brought by force and reeducated at Port-Royal. France had always the habit of reeducating the minor children of its enemies since the preceeding century. It had also reeducated by force the children of French protestants. For lack of evidence of the origin of a person in North America in the 17th century, the genealogists should not presume that this person is European but Indian or even Metis. It is a question of a simple presumption which could be reversed with the help of an opposite proof. It is a question also of a deduction made with common sense. The persons of unknown origin in the Census of Port-Royal in 1671 need to be presumed natives, Indians or Metis. Their behavior demonstrate morever that they are Metis. They intermarried among themselves and found refuge once again at the Saint John River in order to retake the fur trade and to become the leader of native bands which resisted England. This is why it is so difficult to identify the Metis of Acadia: they were par tof the resistance and Catholic Church in Canada and F.X. Gameau, Tanguay, Casgrain, Lionel Groulx and Archange Godbout denied their existence. Because of a lack of baptismal, marriage and burial acts, historical proof is used to determine the origin of persons. Refer to the texts of the Biorgraphical Dictionary of Canada to understand the history of Acadia. Refer also to information found in the Acadian Archives Center at the University of Monction. We would not be able to say that Neil Armstrong met an American woman on the Moon if we discover one day descendants on this satellite. Therefore we can not say that the French who landed alone in America in the 17th century met French women who were hanging around there. Briefly, these French men united themselves to Natives and theri children removed by force perpetuated their memory by keeping their family name. 1. Post-1901 Census -- Let's Check the Scoreboards!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Labour Day and many vacations have passed, and for some, children are back at school, giving all a few more minutes for personal work and research. It would be great if we could find the 1911 (or later) census on Automated Genealogy so we are asking for any assistance. 1. Check the scoreboards of both Senators and Members of Parliament http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm and for Senators http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Senscore1.htm 2. Check the symbols -- we hope those who have the GOLD symbol still agree. GREEN means the person is undecided or else a secretary answered; BLUE ? means the person could not bother answering or is a new Member of Parliament. At present we only have one RED X in Ontario which will remain unless the MP replies personally. 3. E-mails are easy to do -- but are not always successful -- too easy for a secretary to delete. LETTERS, either typed or written by hand, are more acceptable. Do NOT use white paper -- even hot pink might be more noticeable -- and as you have already paid the postage (in Canada) , use large envelopes -- FREE!!!! 4. Your letter could contain genetically inherited diseases facts, lost family members. The questions and other data has been placed on the census pages for your usage -- but try putting it in your own words. [It is alright if ONE person mails to all 308 MPs with the same letter, but we should vary the wording, or it becomes a government form letter]. 5. House of Commons address: NAME, House of Commons, Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 Senate address: NAME, Senate of Canada, Ottawa, ON K1A 0A4 Several others should receive letters, but wording would definitely be different -- e.g. Dr. Fellegi, etc. 6. Copies of letters to politicians are requested for the scoreboards, FORWARD to Gordon Watts at gordon_watts@telus.net Should any reply be received, this is also requested. 7. Should any reader wish to become active and learn more, please contact me -- we have our own mail list, committee and Friends list as we attempt to keep postings off the regular lists as much as possible. 8. Petitions are needed -- street names not needed, only NAME, city, province/state and postal code/zip code. Download from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/ Looking forward to many copies of postings -- try using BCC to let us know -- then the politician will not know we received a copy. Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@symatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee 25 Crestview Avenue, Brampton, ON L6W 2R8 [Phone numbers to YOUR MP or Senator are suggested] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/post1901census.htm

There are users on the QUEBEC list that don't want to handle all the emails the QUEBEC-RESEARCH list generates but still want to be involved in their other activities. 1. Edouard H. St-Michel b. abt 1825
    2. Pat Hammons
    3. I am a subsciber to PRDH, but it only goes to 1799. This is a real long shot, but I am looking for the parents of Edward/Edouard H. St-Michel who was born about 1825 in Canada. I know that is a really broad statement. But I have no other information, only that he did marry in St. Louis, MO in 1839. And was a Merchant there and died there. I don't have a clue as to if he is of the 'Circe-St-Michel' family or other St-Michel families. I have not yet found any other clues to his family in St. Louis. Are there anyother books like PRDH that would have births after 1799 or would they only be parish type books? thanks Pat

    1. Post-1901 Census -- Several Things to do on a Long Weekend
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Many will be involved in family get-togethers on this Labout Day weekend -- which means many getting together for barbeques and picnics before the young ones head off to school. This is an excellent time to print off Senate and House of Commons petitions -- and Page 1 MUST be included. These are downloadable at http://www/globalgenealogy.com/Census/ Addresses are given where these are to be mailed. Feel in the mood for writing letters -- printed on coloured paper, as white seems to be the official "Hill" colour. Check the following http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm/ Send a family reason for desiring the release of the 1911 census, and there are many among us! Many have GOLD ticks -- I have faith they have not changed his or her mind. We need to contact the newcomers and any letter writers are invited to use the questions on the scoreboard, changed in his or her style of writing. Should any be interested in becoming a Canada Census Committee member, we need all the assistance we can get. Just send a memo to me -- I will add you very quickly. Reason for this? There are many mail lists in Canada but it is preferred not to post all the "inter-office" memos on the mail lists -- but rather among ourselves. Things are becoming more interesting -- and as we know, Parliament does not open until October 4, 2004. We need the petitions for support of the desire to have the unrestricted release of the 1911 and later Canadian census records. There will be a census bill later -- but it must be unrestrictive and only 92 years. Postage is FREE -- even with large envelopes. Send letters to NAME / House of Commons / Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 Looking for lots of mail -- do not forget Page 1 -- very important Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee 25 Crestview Avenue, Brampton, ON L6W 2R8 [The address MUST be on all letters if you desire a reply]

    3. I need help in locating 2 of my great uncles. I found both of them in the 1881 census in Valleyfield Beauharnois, PQ and lost track of them in 1883 after Moise married in Valleyfield. They are not in the USA census nor in the 1901 Canadian census that I can find. My great uncle Moise Hubert son of Francois Xavier Hubert and Rose Chatigny born march 13 1861 in St Timothe, Beauharnois, PQ. He married Aurelie Tessier in Ste Cecile Valleyfield Beauharnois PQ on july 4 1883. After that I lost them and cannot find them. My other great uncle Dorcino andre was born june 7 1865 in St Timothe as well and as far as I know he never married. In the 1881 census he was in Valleyfield. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide Rita Hubert Lachance
