Watts" <gordon_watts@telus.net> To: "Canada Census Campaign" <CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 18, 2004 7:22 PM Subject: Post 1901 Census - A new Gold Tick Greetings All. A new Gold Tick of support has been added to the MPs Scoreboard. Newly elected MP Nina Grewal sent the following supportive letter in response to the letter I sent to all 308 Members of Parliament. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-chair Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census en francais http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f Permission to forward without notice is granted ========= Ottawa September 14, 2004 Mr. Gordon A. Watts Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee 1455 Delia Drive Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 2V9 Dear Mr. Watts Thank you for your letter expressing support for the release of post-1901 Census records. I appreciate knowing your views on this issue and am pleased to be given the opportunity of providing you with our position. The Conservative Party of Canada supports the preservation of Census records and the subsequent transfer of these records to the National Archives for public release. We believe the historical 92-year period is an adequate length of time, and that this is generally consistent with the practice in Britain and the Unites States, where records are kept confidential for 100 and 72 years respectively. However, the Conservative Party of Canada will not be supporting the Census legislation proposed in Bill S-13 should it be reintroduced in this Parliament. That legislation will allow limited access to "tombstone" Census information after 92 years. Full access to Census records will only be allowed after 112 years. We believe the proposed legislation further complicates matters by allowing access after 92 years to only designated individuals. The designation process will result in a complicated bureaucreacy, added costs and the question of who will police the Census. Thank you again for taking the time to write and express your views on this issue. Yours sincerely, Nina Grewal, M.P. Fleetwood-Port Kells

    2. Harriet E. Cady
    3. HI Fran, I have been trying to find information on where my grandfather, Emile MERCIER was baptised, confirmed and went to church. His mother, Georgianna COUTURE died on July 23, 1894 and he was one year and given by his father, Nazaire MERCIER to relatives to raise. I believe it was one of my great grandmothers sisters around Lake Megantic. Is it possible to search those church records to find baptisms, first communions and confirmations? Thanks for all the information

    1. Re: [QUEBEC] Re: [BEAN] Beans in Quebec - Levi K. Bean born 1804 in Lower Can...
    2. this looks like a case of a name that has been Anglicized, this often happened when being know as a French Canadian didn't do you any favors. It also made it easier for the census taker etc. Often this came along with marrying a Protestant/ Anglophone. Bean would be Lefevre or Lefebre, or Lefevbre in French Canada. so Give these spelling a whirl and see if you hit pay dirt. Levevre also some times became Fever Other names that were changed were Boisvert to Greenwood. Benoit to Benwah, Campo to Camp, La Montaigne to Mountain, LaFountain to Fountain Pellitier to Shovel or Pelkey, Courtemanche to Shortsleeve. Noel to Christmas. and the list goes on and on. 1. Post-1901 Census -- A Request to all Genealogical Societies
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- A large envelope arrived today -- and these always hold surprises!! Inside were two signed petitions, 47 signatures on each one, for the Senate of Canada and the House of Commons. [Gordon and I exchange petitions -- mine are for the Senate and go to Senator Lorna Milne]. Very possibly, by the time Parliamentary sessions begin October 4, we will be able to announce the House of Commons counterpart to Senator Lorna Milne, a staunch fighter for us since 1999. The signatures were collected at the September meeting of the Simcoe County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Many thanks, Rita!! Which genealogical society will top this number -- when signing, a person may sign both the Senate and House of Commons petitions, regardless of the ones previously signed. Please download from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/ If Adobe Acrobat is the problem, get it for FREE from this site. Addresses for mailing are at the same site. Looking forward to more surprises in my mail!! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/post1901census.htm

I wish to search the census for Charles Traversee in Stanstead County, maybe in Beebe/Beebe Plains. Is the 1861 census online, or do I need to ask a researcher for a lookup? Thank you, Laura Callier
