I hope that everyone had a good Thanksgiving weekend and that you had your fill of turkey. I spend a part of the weekend collating Census Petitions to the House of Commons received to date. The totals as I write this are as follows: BC 904 AB 194 SK 159 MB 76 ON 744 QC 148 NB 2 NS 262 ======= Total 2489 Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Territories are conspicuous by their absence of signatures. I hope that this will soon be remedied. In addition to the above signatures for the House of Commons I have almost 300 signatures to send to Muriel for presentation in the Senate. Please keep the petitions coming. If we truly wish to see further Census records of Canada released we must continue to tell our Parliamentarians about those wishes. Two ways of doing this are by writing letters and emails, and by signing petitions. Letters and email are important but we have no way of determining the numbers sent. On the other hand, numbers of signatures on petitions give us something we can point to as an indication of support for access. Keep them coming. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. Morvan(t) family
    2. Gordon Bonnet
    3. Hi again, I'm trying to find out the parents of my ancestor, Bernard Morvant, who shows up in Louisiana records in the mid-1700s. I believe that Bernard Morvant is very likely the grandson of Francois Morvan (Jean Morvan/Anne Lecors), b. 1671 in Mesle, Brittany, who married February 4, 1694 to Marie Madeleine Delaunay of Quebec (Nicolas DeLaunay/Anne-Antoinette Durand). Francois and Madeleine (Delaunay) Morvan had recorded children Jeanne-Charlotte (1695), Jean (1697), Francois (1699), and Marie-Angelique (1701); only Jean and Jeanne-Charlotte survived to adulthood. Jean was "engage ouest" in 1719 -- contracted to participate in the fur trade -- and probably left Quebec for what is now Michigan or Illinois at that time. He is called "Jean Morvan dit Labonté," and signed a contract with Paul Guillet on 3 May 1719 to make a trip to the "high country" (les pays d'en haut). No further records for Jean have been found, but many settlers in Louisiana from eastern Canada passed through the upper midwest, especially Fort Kaskaskia, Illinois. Circumstantial evidence connecting Bernard Morvant to this family is that Bernard named three of his children Francois, Jeannette, and Charlotte -- if I am correct, after his father's siblings. Does anyone have any record of Jean Morvan (Morvent, Morvant) after 1719? I've looked a bit in Illinois and Michigan records, but the records there in the early 18th century are pretty thin. I have a suspicion he may have married a Native woman -- my maternal grandmother (whose own mother was a Morvant) always claimed we had Native ancestry somewhere on that side of the family. Any help would be great -- and I'm happy to share what I have on this family. Cheers, Gordon Bonnet Trumansburg NY USA

    1. Jolibois family
    2. Gordon Bonnet
    3. Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help me on my Jolibois line.... I descend from Philippe Jolibois, m. January 14, 1793 in St. James Parish, Louisiana to Marie-Louise Charpentier, d/o Pierre and Jeanne (Moutard) Charpentier. Philippe's line is definitely from Montreal -- sources agree on that much. However, there are three documents which disagree as to Philippe's parents. One of them lists his parents as Philippe Courtois (presumably "dit Jolibois?") and Marie Rosa -- and both Courtois and Rosa are well established families in Montreal. The other two say Philippe's parents are Francois Jolibois and Ursule LeGrand. I have transcripts of the original documents at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gbonnet&id=I3931 I have done extensive research in Canadian records for any mention of Philippe Courtois m. Marie Rosa, and also Francois Jolibois m. Ursule LeGrand, and have never found any mention of _either_ one. Neither have I found out why three records in Louisiana, recorded within a period of eight years and using the same source of information (Philippe Jolibois himself), show two different sets of parents. I've been tempted to show Francois and Ursule as Philippe's parents because those are shown twice, but "majority rules" doesn't mean it's correct. Does anyone have any further information on these folks -- and _especially_, does anyone know of any Canadian records of _either_ Philippe Courtois and Marie Rosa, or Francois Jolibois and Ursule LeGrand? One possible thought I had -- and if it seems like I'm grasping at straws, it's probably because I am -- is that Philippe Courtois was a mistransliteration by the priest who recorded that document, and he was really Philippe Carton (which, if you pronounce it in French, isn't that far from Courtois). Carton is one of the names in Quebec with a dit of Jolibois. Any help would be greatly appreciated -- even hints or thoughts -- and I am happy to share what information I have. cheers, Gordon Bonnet Trumansburg NY USA

    3. This story appeared in the Caledonian Record and I thought I would send so persons researching the names could check it out. Pickup Crashes Into Kitchen By JAMES JARDINE, Staff Writer Saturday October 9, 2004 LYNDONVILLE VERMONT A Lyndonville couple playing cards in their kitchen last night escaped injury when a late-model Dodge pickup struck the front of their house at 19 High St., causing major damage to both the house and their vehicle parked out front. The crash happened around 9 p.m., when the driver, a woman, made a 90-degree left turn at the top of High Street and apparently continued to turn left, steering the truck across a driveway and through the kitchen of an apartment occupied by Stanley and Jeannine Renaudette. The Renaudettes were sitting at a table in the kitchen playing cards when the crash occurred. Jeannine Renaudette received cuts and bruises on her arms, while Stanley Renaudette suffered an injury to his ankle. The table where the Renaudettes were sitting was toppled over and pushed against a sink. Police had not identified the driver by 11 last night. The truck had "Leduc's Sugar House" lettered on its doors. According to witnesses, immediately after the crash a man riding in the pickup jumped out of the passenger side and walked away from the scene. The driver was taken from the scene by Lyndonville police officer Bridget Tweedie for processing at the St. Johnsbury Police Department. It is believed neither person in the pickup was seriously injured. The front wall of the Renaudettes' kitchen was completely torn away, exposing the kitchen to the outside. Their Chevrolet Blazer, which had been parked in front, was severely damaged on the driver's side and appeared to be supporting a portion of the house. Lyndonville Fire Department engines and rescue van, along with an ambulance from Lyndon Rescue, responded to the scene. The Lyndonville Police Department investigated the incident and was assisted by state police. The house is owned by Robert and Jean Guest. Robert Guest was at the scene, telephoning contractors to locate plywood for the front of the house.
