    1. Post-1901 Census: How About A Strange Christmas Present for One Who Works for US
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- This special message may be forwarded to friends and other lists, but I am only sending it to lists I administer and the two, NOVA-SCOTIA and LUNEN-LINKS, where the first item about census release was made in March 1999. Of course it is being sent to the CCC list and committee!! One of the best Christmas presents at this point in the life of Bill S-18 would be a HUGE stack of petitions -- we use Non-Resident and Senate in the Senate, House of Commons in the House of Commons. The Non-Resident is for all those other than Canadians. Download from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/index.htm There are addresses where to send beneath the petitions. Families are gathering at this time of year, students may get these signed at school (print a copy of this memo and send petition copies -- the teacher might love you). I have yet to see a petition from a Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions or other clubs. Surprise me!! Street addresses are not needed -- NAME, CITY, STATE or PROVINCE, ZIP/POSTAL CODE. I know Senator Lorna Milne's policy advisor is on the CCC list -- but this is one time he will not report to his "boss". Thanks, Jeff! Senator Milne is a genealogist -- her work for us has interrupted finishing several books plus important research -- she knows all about "brick walls" -- the 1911 census might knock down one of them. I do not mind if you only send in Page 1 -- but hopefully both 1 and 2. Let's surprise Senator Milne -- my delivery system is to put them in at the mail slot in her door -- let's cover the rug that is on the inside of her hallway!!! Muriel M. 1. Post-1901 Census -- Letter from The Hon. Anne McLellan
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. HON. ANNE MCLELLAN, P.C., M.P. Edmonton Centre Dec. 14, 2004 Dear Mrs. Davidson: Thank you for your correspondence dated November 14, 2004 regarding the status of Bill S-18, An Act to Amend the Statistics Act. I support the facilitation of genealogical research by those who wish to exploretheir roots and family histories, and contribute to the understanding of our national heritage. I am also sensitive to the privacy issues that arise with respect to personal records. As you will no doubt appreciate, it is essential that the integrity of the census process be protected. I can tell you that I will give Bill S-18 my careful attention when it reaches the House of Commons, and I will discuss the matter with my caucus colleagues. I am confident that a thorough debate in both the Senate and the House of Commons will result in legislation that best meets the needs of Canadians. I trust that I have been able to address your concerns, and again, I thank you for writing. Yours sincerely, [signature] A. Anne McLellan

Watts" <gordon_watts@telus.net> To: "Canada Census Campaign" <CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 15, 2004 3:28 PM Subject: Post 1901 Census - last column of 2004 posted Greetings All. What is likely to be the last of my columns on the Post 1901 Census issue for the year 2004 has been posted to http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazce/gazce110.htm Topics included in this issue include: Information Commissioner proceeding with legal action; Bill S-18; and Holiday Greetings. Unless something extraordinary happens my next column will be posted sometime in January 2005. As of Tuesday 14 December, Second Reading debate of Bill S-18 in the Senate has not yet been resumed. As there is, at most, today and Thursday left before the Senate recesses for the Christmas break, it would seem unlikely that Bill S-18 will be referred to Committee this year. Perhaps the Grinch has found a home in the Senate chambers. <]:-) Parliament will not resume sitting again until Monday, 31 January 2005. I leave Friday morning to travel to Calgary to spend Christmas with my son and two of my granddaughters. While I am away I will be keeping up with my email, and what, if anything is happening with the Census issue. It is unlikely that I will be doing much, if any, updating of the Post 1901 Census Project website. I will be returning home a few days after the New Year. For those who, like myself, drive to visit loved ones at this time of year, I urge you to take a little extra care, and a little extra time to get where you are going. Whether you travel a great distance, or only a few miles, we want you to return home safely. At the risk of being considered 'politically incorrect', I will take this opportunity, on behalf of myself and the Canada Census Committee, to wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best Wishes also to anyone who may not celebrate Christmas, but celebrate holidays specific to their own faith. May each of you enjoy good health, good cheer, and prosperity in the coming year. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
