    1. PARADIS or PERTHUIS & DAMISE
    2. Claire Goyette
    3. Hi.........I am hoping someone can help me with this tangled mess I have. I have a Jean Paradis married to Claude Damise arounf 1675. They have a son Andre that was baptized in Montreal on 3 March 1676 and in Point-aux-Trembles on 23 March 1676, according to PRDH. Seems like Claude was not married to Jean but was married to Pierre Perthuis on 10 Dec 1668. She had several children (11) with Pierre, none named Andre. Jean Paradis married Jeanne Paquet on 5 Feb 1679 and his marriage record in PRDH does not indicate he is a widower. Claude Damise died 10 June 1705. Is it possible that Andre is "un enfant naturel"? 1. Post 1901 Census - time to send petitions
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all -- Total number of signatures on petitions to date number about 33,000 -- more could be used before hopefully switching to House of Commons only. Non-Residents are only able to send petitions to the Senate -- so mail 'em NOW!!! Hopefully the coming St. Patrick's Day will be a lucky one and we find Bill S-18 in the House of Commons. The following is from Gordon -- the other co-chair -- I requested the memo by phone when my internet was down due to lack of new modem!! Muriel M. Davidson muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca [See site address below Gordon's name] ======= ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon A. Watts" <gordon_watts@telus.net> To: "Canada Census Campaign" <CANADA-CENSUS-CAMPAIGN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 26, 2005 9:58 PM Subject: Post 1901 Census - time to send petitions Greetings All For those who have been holding onto Post 1901 Census petitions, hoping to collect one or two more signatures, it is perhaps time to think about sending them in to us. Particularly those for the Senate and Non-Resident petitions. Petitions for the House of Commons can wait a few more days but they should be forwarded to us shortly as well. We hope that soon no more petitions will be needed. The next sitting of the Senate will be Monday 7 March 2005. Bill S-18 does not appear on the Order Paper for that day but we think it likely that the Senate Committee will Report it back to the Senate then. Presentation of Reports from Standing or Special Committees is the third item on the Daily Routine of Business. Debate on Third Reading of S-18 will hopefully begin Tuesday 8 March 2005. With a little luck it could complete Third Reading and Referral to the House of Commons in one sitting (we hope). Any communications with your Parliamentary representatives at this time should stress that Bill S-18 has the support of the Canada Census Committee, the Canadian Historical Association, and the Association of Canadian Archivists. Stress also that we wish to see Bill S-18 proceed through the House of Commons as quickly as possible in order that it can be completed and receive Royal Assent before Parliament recesses for the summer. As always, be polite and respectful in your communications. With a little luck, many of us will spend our summer researching the 1911 Census Records instead of still fighting to have them released. They had one child; Jean. Had some spare time at the archives yesterday so did some looking for Ethel. From the Quebec government index of deaths 1926-1995, I found that Ethel died Feb 20, 1967 in St Laurent(a suburb of Montreal). Her obituary in the Montreal Star newspaper of Feb 21, 1967 says she was the widow of Francis Blakely & survived by her daughter Jean(Mrs James Oliver). She was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal. I didn't find Jean in the death index but I did find James Oliver. He died in his 80th year on June 20, 1993 also in St Laurent. His obit in the Montreal Gazette newspaper says he was the widower of Jean, the father of Judy Turner(John), Hugh(Carol) & Douglas(Suzanne) & the grandfather of Joyce, Allison, Sheila, Elaine, James, Michael, Kerry, Tracy & Robert. Hope this helps. Gina

    1. Re: [QUEBEC] Re: [Q-R] Is there a french name for Blanche?
    2. In a message dated 2/21/2005 8:44:59 PM Eastern Standard Time, WFrantastic@aol.com writes: Hi there, Blanche IS the French name ...means White as does Alba ( latin) Bianca ( spanish/Italian) Fran Wilcox ============================ In my first year of ministry as a priest, I was assigned to the parish of Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs, in the northern Berkshire town of Adams, Massachusetts. One day, the rectory office doorbell rang, and a woman about my present age (mid 60s) came in to ask if I could solve a problem. She had been to the Town Hall to obtain a copy of her birth certificate, so that she could file for Social Security Retirement Benefits, but the Town Clerk told her there was no one by her name, in the town records. There was a Mary Dubois, born to her parents on her birth date in her birth year, but there was no Blanche Dubois. The Town Clerk suggested that she come to the rectory to obtain her baptismal record, which was likely to include her full name, which the Clerk knew was likely to include three or four given names, first Marie, then at least two other saints' names. So I looked in the baptismal record for her birth year, and sure enough, I found a baptismal record for a girl born to her parents, on her birth date, in her birth year. I looked up at Blanche, and asked her if she knew who her godmother was. She answered, "Ma tante Rosealba". Typically, she was named for her godmother. Her name, in the baptismal register, was Mariam Rosam Albam. That is, in English, Mary Rose White. And in French, Marie Rose Blanche. On that day, I was very glad to know a bit of French, and a bit of Latin, as well as English. Otherwise, I could not have certified that the person who called herself Blanche Dubois, and who was registered at Town Hall as Mary Dubois, was the same person as the baptismal record at Notre Dame parish listed as Mariam Rosam Albam Dubois. And if the town record listed her as Mary Woods, it still would have taken knowledge of three languages to figure it all out! Fr Owen Taggart
