Hello, The MANUEL vs. MANWELL surnames are being discussed on a NH (US) Board / List. When I went to do a look-up I found a Joseph MANWELL listed as an adopted infant living with a young couple from Canada. I dod more look-ups in census records and found information which might help someone. I'd like to copy / paste my posting to the NH Lists - here: The MANUEL and MANWELL names are being discussed on the Hillsborough Co. Board. I went to see if the MANWELL name is found in census records for NH, and only found one before 1900. MANWELL, JOSEPH (1880 U.S. Census) NEW HAMPSHIRE , MERRIMACK, SUNCOOK Race: WHITE, Born: CANA Series: T9 Roll: 765 Page: 5 He is listed as the Adopted Infant living with his adoptive-parents. The handwriting is difficult, but the father looks like: Martell JOSETTA, 24. His wife, Anne, and he have a daughter, 2. The record says that she works in a cotton mill, but she probably is "home" at the moment. :o) (A closer look at the handwriting and there is a chance the infant's name is MAXWELL, but it looks more like MANWELL. Living on one side of them is a large family: Uzeb? VERVILLE (sp?). 34, and wife, Philomene, 42, and 8 children, 4 of the children work in the cotton mill, from Age 12 to 18. On the other side of them is another large family: Henry BRISSETTE, with wife and 9 children. 3 daughters and a son work in the cotton mill, but the oldest son works at a "brick works?" The 3 families mentioned all came down from Canada. Any chance that Anne JOSETTA is a daughter of one of the other couples? It looks like there was a large "cotton mill" in Suncook which attracted men from Canada. Well, here is another case where the Index for the census records is different than the information on the census pages. I went to see if there were other JOSETTA families in NH. This time the 1880 Index has the couple: Amos and Martele JOSETTA. But the handwriting looks more like Martell and Annie JOSETTA. :o( So, always check out - just the surname - during the 1800's, and look for the given-names, secondly. I checked to see if there were other VERVILLE families, and there were at least 2, large families living in Manchester - also working in a cotton mill. And, also in Suncook, another young couple, Napolean VERVILLE. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (Regarding MANUEL and MANWELL, it reminds me of my grandmother's birth-name, Daisy WATROUS. I'm told that is a variation on WATERHOUSE. (She was adopted at Age 3 (MA) and had her name changed to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER. Long, complicated story in archives of MA Lists.) (Don't forget that the 1880 US census is available at www.familysearch.org )
Hi Frank, Many thanks for your input. I am relieved to find that somebody else has looked through the information, checked several sources and still finds a few oddities in this one. I was beginning to think I'd missed something obvious. I'd made an assumption that if you were born in Canada at that time you would be British but didn't know for sure. We haven't been able to find where Hugh McNair got his medical qualifications - pretty certain it was not in UK, and most likely in US but haven't found a means of checking that out (nothing found in the UK medical register). His service with the Harvard Unit in WWI is an indication that he was working as a newly qualified doctor in Boston in 1915 so he may well have qualified at Harvard. The 1916 voyage is his return from France paid for by the UK War Office. The curiosity is that he is listed as single returning to Boston and then gives relative as Mrs H R McNair in NYC. His later war service was with CAMC but it looks like he stayed in Quebec as we have evidence of him at the Chateau Frontenac address in summer 1917 and in December 1918. We did find Hugh McNair in US 1910 Census age 20 in NYC with his mother Flora and her second husband of 18 years, one Frederick W King. This says that Hugh and his mother were born Cuba, Spanish nationality! Think maybe stepdad filled the form in and didn't know the correct details - but it does throw another little question mark into the puzzle. We now have the birth certificate for his second child Helen who was born in Richmond Surrey UK in 1919. The details are all as expected and he states occupation as " MD ex Canadian Army". His wife is Augusta Reddington-Sweeney. Next step would be to find the birth of their first child Flora C McNair. Deductions from other information says it should be in 1918 between 20 July and 6 September so should have been in Quebec. I can't find out how to access Quebec birth records. Do you know? After WW1 the family are in UK for a while but he goes to Africa in 1923. We get sight of him until 1930 on ships. We know he was a Dr. all during WW11and apparently served with the RAMC. Then he shoots himself in 1948 just a year after marrying my wife's namesake and relative ( and we cannot find a divorce from Augusta who dies in Glasgow in 1959!) War does strange things to people and it would be nice to sort out what really happened. If you have the time, any further thoughts would be appreciated Regards Robin

Hi all; I've searched till I'm blue in the face - lol - for one of my g-g-g-grandmothers, Marie Josephte Chatel b 1792-1796; d/o Antoine & Marguerite Pigeon. In1851 she was 55, in 1861, 65 and in 1871, 78. (how she gained 3 years is beyond me. One census states she was born in Williamstown, but the rest say the Province of Quebec. All her siblings were baptized & buried at Les Cedres between 1788 - 1806. (One was buried at Riviere-de-Prairies). Josephte/Josette was 'major' age at her marriage to Norbert Dupuis in 1816 at Les Cedres. On her death record in 1874 in St-Anicet, her age is given as 82 (1792 If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. Fran
Hello, the PRDH --has the following Jean Lemire b. in France 1625 first marriage: Louise Marsolet Stagnan, Québec, 1653 and : Nicolas Marsolet Stagnan , b. France 1601 fisrt marriage : Marie Barbier in France. 1637 Source :The free part of the PRDH. I have acces to the PRDH only at my genealogical sociéty, but some other may be able to find if there is a connection between the two marriage above. It was not uncommon to see two surnames, in this case Lemire and Marsolet . Finally some descendants could have taken only one of the surname. So I’ve noticed during my research different spelling of the Lemire family name. Personally I spell my last name LeMire. My Grandfather (Jack Lemire) spelled it the same way. His father (Francis Lemire) spelled it Lemire. My Great Great Grandfather (Ovid lemire) spelled it Lemire in the US. In Canada Ovid’s name was Ovide Lemyre Marsolet. As I research into the 1700’s the name go from Lemyre Marsolet back to Lemire, Then back to Lemyre Marsolet in the early 1800’s. Also, sometimes I’ll see Lemyre with about 3 more names to follow. Very confusing. Would anyone have an idea for the reason of the name change? Is marsolet my real last name and Lemire a middle name? Can anyone tell me the history of the Lemire surname? Thanks, Blair LeMire
"Cousins or Brothers?" I'm trying to find any info like obitaries, stories, anything that will link these two together. Any help would be rgeatly appreciated Thanks, Blair LeMire The things that is common for Ovid and Oscar: 1. They’re from the same City: St Roch, L'assomption, Quebec. 2. Lived in the same town and same street in the USA for roughly 30 years: Martinsville in Harrison County, Missouri. 3. Relatives buried in the same Cemetery: Kidwell Cemetery. 4. Ovid had a son who died named Oscar. 5. Oscar had a son Named George Ernest (born: 1884), the same name as Ovid's son who died at the age of 1 in (Died: 1871). 6. Ovid's son Ovid A. Lemire married Clara Smith who is Abiah Smith's sister, Oscar's Wife. 7. Oscar’s Parents Mom - Maryette Tellier (Birth: abt 1829); Dad - Joseph Lemire (Birth: abt 1829) 8. Ovid’s Parents: Mom – MarieTellier (Birth: Jun 17 1808); Dad - Joachim Lemyre Marsolet (Joachim Lemire) (Birth: May 20 1808) 9. Maybe Maryette is Mary but the Birth dates are different. Also, maybe Joachim changed his name to Joseph when he came to the US. Or...maybe Marry died and Joachim remarried. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ovid Lemire's Bio: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ovid's Mother: MarieTellier Birth: Jun 17 1808 Death: Unknown (I need to work on finding the exact date) Ovid's Father: Joachim Lemyre Marsolet (Joachim Lemire) Birth: May 20 1808 Death: May 28th 1855 Ovide lemyre Marsolet (Ovid lemire) Birth: Feb 8th 1838 St Roch, L'assomption, Quebec Died: Aug 9th 1921 Fullerton, Nebraska (Buried in the Fullerton Cemetery) Ovid's Spouse: Louisa Archaumbault Born: Aug 7th 1832, St Roch, L'assomption, Quebec Died: Oct 4th 1900 Fullerton, Nebraska (Buried in the Fullerton Cemetery) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1850: Moved to Martinsville, Missouri. Hi Robin; Checking into various records, I see that your McNair stated that he was born in Kingston, Ontario. However, a check of the censuses in Frontenac County (Kingston is in that county) does not show any McNair family living there at any time. I he was born there in 1890, then he siuld have been found in the 1891 Canada census! The address he gave as living in Quebec City in 1917 is correct, but at the same date, or thereabouts, (on June 5, 1917) he gave a New York City address on another army draft form (531 West 160th St., New York City). When he sailed for Great Britain in November 1915, he said his last permanent address was in the US. Therefore, looks to me that your McNair was already living in the US before 1914, and that he served with the British Army Harvard Unit between 1915 and 1916 simply because the US was not yet at war with Germany. I think he served with the US Army from 1917 to the end of the war. In June 1916 when he landed in New York aboard the Adriatic, he stated that his last permanent residence was in Boston, but that his wife was living at 323 West 20th Street, New York City. He gave his Nationality as British. At that time Canada did not have a separate passport or nationality. Odd though that I was unable to find him in any census, either in Canada or in the US, nor in Great Britain before he entered the army. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he settled in the United Kingdom after the first WW. Unfortunately, the records do not show where he studied medicine. That would have helped.
