If you have family or friends across Canada who may be interested in photographing their local cemeteries, please pass on this information to them. Their photographed cemeteries will have wide exposure on this National Cemetery website. * 4. Cemeteries have spousal duplicated photographs. This means a photo which also has the spouse's maiden name showing, is duplicated and when one searches using the onboard search engine, for a surname, the spouse's surname will be reported as a separate "search result". * 2. If your "search engine" keyword is the same as a city, town, village, township then here is a valuable tip. *CONCERN:* If your "search engine" keyword you are using is say: pembrok* then your search will pick up all the pembroke surnames....*BUT* ...it will also pick up all the website pages where pembroke is used as a meta name. *SOLUTION:* Change your keyword to pembrok1 and the search engine will only pick up the gravemarkers with the pembroke surname. * 3. 3. Hi Prue, Out of curiousity, I looked at the 1870 census and found Richard and Mary NEWMAN. It says that Mary was born in Canada, and the first 3 children mentioned were teen-age children also born in Canada. The children were 17 to 7, and I wonder whether they were all "his" children, and could have some of them have been "her" children. But, they were both Age 61 and 60 in 1870. And, in 1880, Anne NEWMAN is 57 and living with her 3 teen-age sons. That means she was having children in her 40's. The youngest son was born in VT, and her son, 24, and his family were living beside them. This is a confusing family, and it's the kind of family that needs "pencil and paper" to figure out. :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. I checked for a Thomas NEWMAN in VT and there was one, but born in England. He was 61, widowed, and living in the VT State Soldiers Home in Bennington. I see there are other NEWMAN people living in VT or NH 1870's / 1880's and born in England. Either it's a popular name or they were relatives. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Prue Crossland" <pruecrossland@greetland.fsnet.co.uk> To: <QUEBEC-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 9:30 AM Subject: [QUEBEC] Marriage to mother and daughter > > Prue > > Yorkshire, England > > > > >

    3. Hi Prue, I needed to read your story twice to understand it correctly. But, because it was the 1850's in Canada, it's entirely possible that it was a "common-law marriage." No records anywhere. And, because the couple left Canada and went to New Hampshire early on, I would still say they might not have officially married. And, if Ann BANTING / NEWMAN was 13 or 14 in 1840, and in 1851 she had a 2-yr-old son, then she "got pregnant" at maybe Age 20 or 21. Then during the 1850's and 1860's she had 6 more children with her step-father, with a total of 7 children before the 1870 census. It seems that the couple "separated" during the 1870's - for whatever reason, and Ann would have been in her 40's. For the life she had led, she might not have wanted to get re-married. Also, I'm not reading what happened to Ann's younger siblings, Hannah, George, William, and Thomas born between 1826 and 1840. Is there any chance that Charlotte died in childbirth with her 6th child? If Ann was 13 or 14, she would have become the substitute mother for her younger siblings, maybe Ages 10 to 3. If she "left the home" during the 1870's, her younger siblings would have been in their 30's or 40's. Did they remain close to her? Just my thoughts at 6 am New England time. 1. [QUEBEC] Marriage to mother and daughter
    2. Prue Crossland
    3. Hello Listers This is my first query to this list, I am hoping you will be able to help me. My 3xgreat grandfather had an illegitimate daughter, Ann Banting, who was baptised in Wherwell, Hampshire, England in 1826. Her mother was Charlotte Joyce. Charlotte married a man called Richard Newman, probably from the same village, and they had three more children, Hannah, George and William, before emigrating to Quebec in about 1836, taking Ann with them. Another child, Thomas, was born in 1837 (baptised in Hatley, Compton in 1838) and then in about1840 Charlotte died. Ann at that time was about 13 or 14 and her stepfather Richard was 30 years older. In the 1851 Census they are living in Hereford, Sherbrooke County, Quebec. Ann is enumerated as Ann Newman, spinster, presumably having used the name of Newman as a child of the family. Living with them is Ann's son George Thomas, aged 2. He was baptised in Compton Church of England Church in 1851 as George William, son of Ann Newman, an unmarried woman. At some point Richard and Ann married, their first child together (or at least the first acknowledged to be Richard's) being born in May 1852 in Stewartstown, NH. Three further children were born in NH before the 1861 US Census. Their three eldest children together were baptised in Hatley in 1857, Ann by now being described as Richard's wife. It seems likely therefore that Ann and Richard married between 1851 and 1857, but they could have married either in the Compton area in Quebec where they clearly still retained strong links, or in NH. The family moved to Canaan, VT in the mid 1860s and there were at least another three sons born in the 1860s. In the 1870 US Census the family is in Canaan, VT with 6 children, however Richard's wife is described as Mary and is 60 years old, compared to Ann's age of about 45. In the 1880 US Census Ann is widowed and living in Canaan with three of her sons, with another next door. I have not been able to find any evidence of Richard and Ann's marriage, and if anyone can help this would be appreciated. I am also curious as to whether it was lawful for a man to marry his step-daughter in Quebec at that time. It would not be permitted in the UK now, except where the child has not been brought up by the step parent as a child of the family. Ann died in 1904 and is buried in Piper Hill Cemetery, Stewartstown, NH, near husband Richard. Many thanks Prue Yorkshire, England

After searching the Internet it appears that Jean Pierre Pepin who owns the Drouin Collections has started legal action against Ancestry.com supposedly because they did not live up to the terms of the original agreement signed in 2006 or 2007. So far we only have the Drouin side of the argument since Ancestry has refused to say specifically what the problem is as you can see from their Sept. 11th message. I know that since there was supposed to be a meeting before a Quebec judge on Sept 8th after mediation, one would expect to have had some follow-up message, but so far total silence. Does anyone have any fresh information on this issue? Will we ever see the Drouin Collections on Ancestry.com again? Let's hope that we will and that Ancestry & Drouin come to some satisfatory agreement. 3. Hi Frank, We discussed this some over at the quebec-research list. The last message over there was that the meeting date was rescheduled for I think Sept. 21. As I understand it, Mr. Pepin went to court because he felt that ancestry did not fulfill the terms of their agreement, in which they were supposed to provide a complete index to the collection by a certain date. The judge told ancestry to remove access to the collection until the whole mess is sorted out. According to list members of q-r who have contacted ancestry, the customer service people have not been given any information on the status of the problem, so they have no answers for the customers who call. All I know is that Mr. Pepin had a contract with ancestry, and he feels they did not live up to the terms of that contract. I hadn't heard he was suing the BANQ too. If you check the mail list archives for quebec-research you can read all the messages from there. If you didn't know, a good deal of the Drouin records are on line but not indexed at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#r=0;p=allCollections Scroll down the page till you get to the Canada collections, then you can select it from there. I see he's also suing the BANQ (Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec) What a mess! Frank . . Search the Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=QUEBEC . 1. [QUEBEC] Ancestry.com & Drouin
    2. Francis T. Watters
    3. It's surprising that no one has commented on the disappearence of the Drouin Collections from Ancestry.com since about August 31st. I wrote three times to Ancestry and have always received the same vague answer which tells me nothing. This is what I received from them three days ago: "Dear Francis T.,, We appreciate your message. I apologise for your frustration. We have no further information on the Drouin Collection" End of message. Among other bones of contention, Drouin seems now to believe he didn't get enough money from Ancestry when he ceded them the rights to the collections. I see he's also suing the BANQ (Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec) What a mess! Frank

    3. Francis: I am surprised you haven't seen ALL the comments, etc. regarding the Drouin Collection vs Ancestry.com...for over a week now, that was all that was talked about....go to the Archives and you can retrieve the messages...one note though...the meeting scheduled for Sept 8 did NOT take place...it has been postponed....don't think anyone knows more than that at present but...I could be wrong...:-( Elizabeth > It's surprising that no one has commented on the disappearence of the > Drouin Collections from Ancestry.com since about August 31st.

    3. Mark - Thank you very much! This is the family! How did you get this information? Is it in a database online? I would love to research any other births by Oliver and Marguerite because... I have seen in Rockingham's records information on Lazare, Larger, and Elijah Beausoleil. I am wondering if they are all the same person, recorded by people who couldn't read the writing or who heard something different from what was said. Again, I appreciate your help. There was a Lazare Sylvestre dit Beausoleil baptized there 18 December 1842 to Oliver Sylvestre dit Beausoleil and Marguerite Asselin. They show up in the 1851 and 1861 censuses of that parish. Lazare had a brother Eugene, baptized 14 November 1853 in Ste-Elizabeth, who shows up in Rockingham, VT in the 1900 census.

    3. Thanks Michel It looks to be the right couple. I went to the LDS site for the marriage record but sadly no parents are mentioned for either of them. On the day before the wedding on Jan 5th, Mary Soubriny Taylor was baptized as the lawful wife of Joseph Paradis, joiner, of the township of Ascot. Ascot is also in Sherbrooke County. There's is no hyphen in Mary's name so she could be Mary Soubriny-Taylor instead of Mary-Soubriny Taylor. Without the parents of Joseph I'm still at a dead end on this one.
