The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) defines a "patriot" as one who provided service or direct assistance in achieving America's independence. Military service of course is acceptable service, but so is providing wagons, food and assistance to the militia. Many daughters have become members because their ancestors assisted without being involved in a battle. My ancestor was a devout Quaker and refused to carry a gun, but he provided flour from his mill and horses. Other DAR patriots provided money and food.
