Concerning the recent discussion about a family named Chandler in London Grove, PA in the 1700s, I might add a few comments. It appears that this family is traced in a large genealogy which can be found in large genealogical libraries: _Record of the Descendants of George and Jane Chandler_. It was compiled probably over one-hundred years ago, and I believe the compiler was the noted Quaker genealogist, Gilbert Cope. George Chandler is said to have been born in 1633 at Wilcott in Cheshire, England. He died in 1687 en route from England to Pennsylvania. His wife was named Jane. George Chandler was evidently not a member of Friends but probably sympathized with them. George and Jane Chandler had eight children, six of whom seemed to have lived to come to Pennsylvania. Jane Chandler, after the death of George Chandler, married William Hawkins in 1688. He probably died late in 1694. Jane (Chandler) Hawkins then married James Bayliss in 1695. He probably died in 1716. William Chandler, son of George and Jane Chandler, was born 12 mo. 8, 1678 and died in 1746. On 9 mo. 10, 1712 he married Ann Bowater, daughter of John Bowater, Jr. and his wife, Frances Corbett. William and Ann seemed to have settled in London Grove Twp., Chester County, PA. William Chandler, Jr., b. Feb 1717/1718, d. 28 Feb 1795, son of William and Ann (Bowater) Chandler, m. 1/1756 to Rebecca Allen, b. 8 Aug 1722 , d. 12 July 1799. Rebecca was a daughter of John and Amy (Cox) Allen, and had been married first to Alexander Mode on 18 Apr 1741. Alexander d. 1751. (The following data is derived from miscellaneous sources:) John Bowater, Jr., was a son of John Bowater, Sr.,b. 25 April 1630 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England, d. 16 of 11 mo. (Jan) 1704/5 in South London. John Bowater, Sr. m/1 Ann ____ who died 25 of 2 mo. (Apr.) 1679 in Bromsgrove, Eng. John Bowater, Sr. m/2 on 12th of 9 mo. (Nov.) 1685, Mary Maunder. John Bowater, Jr. was a son of John Bowater, Sr. and Ann _____. Frances Corbett, wife of John Bowater, Jr., was a daughter of William Corbett of Sedgeley, County Stafford, Entland. John and Frances were married on 12 April 1683 at Chadwick, Worcestershire, Eng. A copy of their Friends marriage certificate has been preserved. London Grove Friends Meeting in Chester County, PA was established in 1714, placed under the care of Kennett Preparative Meeting of Newark (now Kennett) Monthly Meeting. In 1718 New Garden Meeting and Nottingham Meeting were set off from Newark Monthly Meeting as a separate Monthly Meeting, and London Grove seems to have been included in this new Monthly Meeting. Nottingham Meeting was set off from New Garden as a separate Monthly Meeting in 1730, but London Grove continued as a Preparative Meeting of New Garden Monthly Meeting. This may have continued until 1792, when London Grove became a separate Monthly Meeting.------ Microfilm records of these Chester County Meetings are available for reading at the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA. In recent years Selby Publishing Company as issued a set of six volumes of abstracts of Quaker records in the Chester County, PA area. I am not sure whether records of London Grove MM are included in this collection. I believe that the familiy of clockmakers at Nottingham spelled their surname as "Chandlee". They were probably not closely related to the descendants of George and Jane Chandler. ------ Herbert Standing.
