Since the recorder acted on behalf of the monthly meeting, the monthly meeting records of births, deaths, marriages, etc., are the records that he or she kept. There would not be a separate set somewhere. In the case of marriages, the recorder copied the original marriage certificate into the monthly meeting marriage book and returned the original certificate to the couple. As for births and deaths, my sense is that recorders usually depended on family members to give them lists of children with birth dates. I've seen a handful of these on scraps of papers, tucked into monthly meeting birth and death records. It's not clear to me how deaths were recorded. I've seen one letter in which a Friend moving from New Garden, NC, in 1852 whose wife died on the way to Indiana asked that her death be recorded in the monthly meeting records there (and it was). It seems likely that in other cases the recorder recorded deaths as he or she learned of them.
