    1. William Henry Lee (was Madden Surname)
    2. This relates to the mailing from Dennis M. Kowallek dated 12/05/2004, which was prompted by my mailing pertaining to the Madden surname. Dennis Kowallek has been searching for some years for the ancestry of William Henry Lee (1798-1855) who was married near Wilmington, Ohio in 1818. The only William Wade Hinshaw abstracts which I have at hand are those pertaining to Meetings in South Carolina and Georgia which are included in a small book edited by the Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. _ Quakers in South Carolina_. The only Lee mentioned in this book is a Francis Lee in the Pine Tree Hill settlement at Camden, S.C.a non-Quaker who came to the settlement in 1752. In searching the Quaker-Roots Archives, it appears that there were a number of the Lee family who were Quakers in the Cane Creek and Spring Friends Meetings in North Carolina in Colonial times. In doing research for Marjorie Morgan's _Hugh Laughlin and Mary Harlan_ genealogy, it became very clear to me that there was a substantial migration from particularly the Spring Meeting area to eastern Tennessee in the 1790-1800 time frame, and there are several with the Lee surname listed in this genealogy. Abstracts of the Cane Creek and Spring Creek Monthly Meeting records are included in Volume 1 of Hinshaw's _Encycloopedia of American Quaker Genealogy_ and abstracts of east Tennessee and southwestern Ohio Meetings are included in Volume 5 of Hinshaw, if I remember corrrectly. I am under the impression that all of the early east Tennessee Monthly Meetings may not be included in this compilation. ----- These are the sources I have in mind which might give some clue to the ancestry of William Henry Lee. - Herbert Standing.

    3. I have reviewed my typescript of the first men's minutes [1808-1848] of Newberry MM, Friendsville, Blount Cty., TN. As notes, there are many Lees referenced there. I find several references to Ephraim Lee in the early years, then Nathan Lee and three children are admitted. On December 4, 1813, John Lee and four sons, including a William, were received on a certificate from Back Creek MM, North Carolina (perhaps a wife and daughters would be reflected in the women's minutes). At the August 4, 1821 session, both a William Lee and a Samuel Lee requested certificates to the Springfield MM, Indiana, which were approved and signed September 1, 1821. In 1824 John Lee received a certificate to the same meeting. This timing raises questions whether this is the William Lee referenced in the earlier messages; I would doubt it unless the transfer was actually to the Springfield MM in Adams Township, west of Wilmington, Clinton County, _Ohio_, and that contradicts the several Newberry MM references to Springfield Meeting, Indiana, in the same period of time. In 1832, Newberry MM granted a certificate to another William Lee "expecting to reside within the verge of some of friends Meetings beyond the Ohio river & has requested a copy of a minute Seting forth his right of membership with which this meeting unites. he being a friend in unity amongst us the Clerk is directed to furnish him with a copy of this minute". At about the same time Nathan Lee and family were given a certificate to Whitewater MM, Richmond, Wayne Cty., Indiana. In January 1836, "William Lee presented a paper to this meeting condemning his misconduct in accomplising his marriage contrary to discipline & also for using profane language which was read and accepted". Ephraim Lee continues to receive appointments to committees and as a representative to the Quarterly Meeting right up to the end of the volume. Tom Thomas C.
