My wife and I are both descendants of John Beals, a Quaker who married Mary Clayton under Chester MM in Chester Co., Pa., in 1682 and died in Chester County in 1726. I've not seen anything that satisfies me as to John's parentage or his origins in England. We know that he was in Chester County by 1677, as in a 1691 court case over a land boundary there John testified that he had plowed the land in question 14 years earlier. No connection is known between the William Beal below and our John Beals. Since John's name often appears in records as Bales, Bailes, or Baels, it was probably pronounced with a long A, to rhyme with "sales" rather than "seals."
