Lily Martin: I have gone back to the St.Mary County Memorial Library, Leonardtown, MD at your request to look up a Mr. Leach, father of James W. Leach b. 1802, MD. You advised that versions of spelling of Leach could be LEACH-LEECH-LEITCH. and that I should also look for BAIN, which was possibly the name of the child's mother. "QUAKER RECORDS OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND" Births, Deaths, Marriages and Abstracts from the Minutes, 1658-1800 by Henry C. Pecen, Jr., M.A. In the Index of the above book, I found one name, "Jon. Leach" in a Quaker Marriage posting in Southern Maryland, namely the marriage of Nehemiah Birckhead, of Anne Arundel County, m. on 24th day of 6th month 1712, to Margatrett Johns, of Calvert County, at Clifts Meeting House. Jon. Leach was one of the witnesses. This is ALL that I could find. This could be a relative or just another person by the name of Leach. "Jon." does seem to be a common abreviation of some name plus there was a certain amount of illiterace at that time.
