Do you have any idea WHY and WHEN your family migrated to North Carolina? My LOWDER/LOUDER/LAUDER family also went from the DE/Philly area to North Carolina. We know they were there because the oldest son, Caleb, was born in the area. I've been trying to track them from 1760 to 1780. Also, from grandsons' records, we know that our original John Lowder was born in England. I believe they are tied in the same area as there is a Matthew Osborne family from DE who also migrated into North Carolina and the oldest Lowder children married into that family of Osbornes (or OZBUN). Recently, I found a Lowder Layton in the DE area and other Lowder names to Layton, but havn't found specific a tie to my family. I haven't been able to find the LOWDER family as Quakers earlier than 1780--but think that the wife, Hannah, may have been a Quaker and married "out of unity". They are listed as Quakers in the New Garden mm in 1780 as Quaker. Really, my main question is: Do you know WHY and WHEN your family migrated to North Carolina? I was very glad of your reference to the minutes for Maryland by Peddy. I'll be trying to order it thru library loan. Thank you for your time. Oops: I do have one other question. Do you have any idea if there was migration from the Virginia area to Delaware or Philly area. I've been able to find Lowders coming from England to Virginia--but not to DE-Philly area. Again, thank you. Eleen Robinson eleen@netutah.com

There apparently were several reasons for migrating from PA into VA and on into NC. Some were because of the availabity of land, and another big reason, especially during the time of 1754-1760, was the French & Indian war. Areas of Pennsylvania were hard hit by this conflict. Most of the whites in Bedford Co, PA, fled into Loudon Co, VA, because of the Indian deprivations. (These were mostly Germanic families, but the same reason drove others out of PA also).
