Palatine is/was a region of Germany but the Palatine Censuses were for Swiss Mennonite families who came up into Southwestern Germany after the 30 Years War when the population of that area had been decimated due to the war. The census was to set up a list of those to be taxed for living on the land of the German landlords. Not all of the Swiss Mennonites remained Mennonites after they immigrated to America but they were Swiss Mennonites at the time of the Census listings in Germany. Germany only allowed a small number to be Quakers. Mine left Germany in the 1830s for America, living first to Ohio and then in Iowa.
