The original 10 purchasers of Nantucket, from Thomas Mayhew, who retained 1/15th of the island, were Tristram Coffin ( main leader), Thomas Macy, Christopher Hussey, Richard Swayne, Thomas Barnard, Peter Coffin , Stephen Greenleaf, John Swayne, and William Pike. It was sold for thirty pounds and two beaver hats- one for Thomas and one for his wife. Thomas had inherited it through his English connections with someone who had a grant from the King. He didn't think it was worthwhile so was anxious to sell it. The greatest female leader of the Quakers in Nantucket was the daughter of Tristram- Eliza Coffin Starbuck- there is a historical fiction book written about her, and there is a bio written by her granddaughter. I have just become really fascinated with this place. I feel a real spiritual connection to these people. Among other original settlers are Edward Starbuck, William Bunker, Robert Barnard, Thomas Coleman, Peter Folger, Stephen Hussey, William Worth, and the Meaders. The Meaders intermarried with the Swains, Coffins, Worths, Stargucks and othe first families, were Quakers and many moved to Easton, NY on the Hudson. The best book to read about Nantucket is Alexander Starbuck's book called " The History of Nantucket, County, Island, and Town, including Genealogies of the First Settlers. It is filled with original records and is a fascinating book about the development of the island. Sue
