Some of the Coppocks became Church of the Brethren. When I was a kid, I remember hearing the evangelist X L Coppock preach at my home church in Wichita, Dr. Doris Coppock, from this same family, was head of women's athletics dept at our college at McPherson. Brethren Encyclopedia has an article about the Coppock family, as I recall. Let me know if you're interested. As to Jacocks, most of what I know comes from the book "The Champion Family: 350 Years in America," by Ruth Crawley Champion (Gateway Press, Baltimore, 1984). These Champions went from Long Island to western New Jersey. Page 4 says that our original Champion emigrant, Thomas Champion, b c1615 in England, d 1680/81 at Hempstead, Long Island, leaving a will and a signed deed. He married: "Frances Jacocks, daughter of Francis Jacocks of Hempstead. The Jacocks family moved from Stamford, Conn., to Hempstead about 1663. Family records are at Warwickshire, England. The name was later shortened to JACOBS." Frances Jacocks, according to the Champion book, was born c1620 and died 1668/87 at Hempstead, L. I. "Early town records referred to her as 'Goody Champion,' Vol I p 345." Another section of the same book, in a chapter entitled "New Jersey Pioneers," mentions that "Many settlers from Long Island moved to the Cape May area to engage in the whaling business, which was very good at that time. Relatives of the Champion family settled in the eastern part of Gloucester County (not Atlantic Co.); among them were: Charity and Samuel Johnson, John and Mary Cole, and James Jacocks, owner of a 'whaling craft.'" Apparently Frances Jacocks Champion had two brothers, William (1627-<1697) and Thomas (1619-<1677). Thomas was born March 20 1619, Stratford on Avon, and died before Sept 1667 at Philadelphia. His wife was Ruth XX. William was born August 12, 1627 and died before Dec 1697. I don't have information regarding a wife. Their father, Francis, was born c1593, perhaps at Stratford on Avon in England, and died January 16 1672, perhaps in Philadelphia. He is described as being "of Hempstead, Long Island." His wife was Grace XX. Do we perhaps have information to share? Are these folks your Jacockses? Jan **************Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make dinner for $10 or less.
