To respond to one who wrote to me specifically, I will provide the same to all on this list. "The objects of this Society shall be: a. To promote historical research. b. To promote scholarly efforts toward the preservation of family documents and record of the SOCIETY OF FRIENDS c. To promote appreciation and recognition of the accurate and extensive family records kept by the SOCIETY OF FRIENDS" "Qualification for Membership: Men, Women and Children who can establish proof of descent,on or before 1835, either lineal or collateral, from an early member of the Society of Friends throughout the World, shall be eligible for membership." I, personally, am so proud of my Quaker ancestry and they are many and early - my father being raised, to a degree, by his Quaker grandmother in Washington state, although she was born in Ohio. To honor them in any way I can, and this Society is only one, is important to me. Being "lifetime" is also important because I don't have to ever pay dues again (anyone who belongs to any organization knows what I mean here). Hope this helps. This becomes such an individual choice as does everything in our life. Choice is good! "The Constitution is not an instrument for government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government, lest it come to dominate our lives and interests." Patrick Henry
I'm sorry. I didn't intend to reply directly. I don't save address's for everyone I reply to so no worries about being in my address book unintentionally. Some lists reply to list and others don't. I didn't look so I didn't realize this one was set to not reply to list. Does the society give money towards these efforts? Do they make materials available to libraries and such for researchers? I guess my real question is more along the lines of: For even a small group of lets say 50 a $235.00 membership brings in a fair chunk of change, $1,175.00. That's a lot of money for someone to belong to a group that gets together once a year in Washington for tea and crumpets [ which I'm sure the members pay for out of pocket ]. If the money went into a trust that would fund the above it probably would be well worth it. There never seems to be enough monies available to preserve things properly. With the above in mind I ask again, "What do you get for your $235.00?" There's an old maxim that holds true even in genealogy, "Follow the money." For some $235.00 is not a lot of money. For others that is quite a bit, especially if your on a fixed income. > "Qualification for Membership: > Men, Women and Children who can establish proof of descent,on or before 1835, either lineal or collateral, from an early member of the Society of Friends throughout the World, shall be eligible for membership." > > I, personally, am so proud of my Quaker ancestry and they are many and early - my father being raised, to a degree, by his Quaker grandmother in Washington state, although she was born in Ohio.
