Well, I wonder if everyone is related to them as I have seen a lot of emails about Quaker families coming from Europe and settling in other states. From the ten original purchasers, I havn't seen a lot of similar names in the emails, but a few, like one I forget to mention- West- is in my line. But as I said, my Swain book doesn't tell who are and who aren't Quakers- all I know is that the island became predominantly Quaker during the second generation. Mary Coffin Starbuck was the first one, and she is the daughter of Tristram and Dionis Coffin. Tristram is the main man who sought purchase of the island and was the leader of the island. He came from landed gentry in England, but got mixed up with Cromwell and got away from persecution. He was an Anabaptist and was persecuted in Mass. Bay Colony, as were Quakers, so he gathered people who wanted a place where they could live peacefully- they started the whole island and they got along with the Indians well; but eventually the one culture overtook the other. The author of Mary's book made her very real, as she became so to him, and the other people were very real, also- lots of conversation in the book. Sue
