I far as I can tell William Duff came to Westmoreland County, Virginia, directly from Ireland. But because of his interest in the West River Meeting in Maryland perhaps Duff was in Maryland before Virginia. This is from Duff's Will probated 2 August 1745 in King George County: "Item: I leave to my Loving wife Elizabeth Duff during her natural life all my lands in the Countys of King George and Westmoreland with all my household goods and stock of what kind soever which shall be there at the time of my decease and likewise all the Negroes and Servants which shall be there at the time of my decease, and after her decease, I lend to my kinsmen William Duff of the Colony of Virginia and John Duff of the Kingdom of Ireland and to the Friends of the Monthly Meeting at West River in Maryland called Quakers in Trust that it shall be for the use of such traveling publick Friends as shall come to visit us and have a Meeting among the people here being recommended by this meeting to which they belong as such who are in unity with them and likewise for to produce a guide to conduct them either to Chesterfield or else to the Cliffs in Maryland over the Patuxen River and to pay their ferriages and to keep the Meeting House in repair ( and also to do their endeavor towards keeping good the stock of Negroes upon the said plantations) and what profits shall arise from it more than will repay the charges aforementioned, to be equally divided between my kinsmen William Duff and John Duff and that my kinsman William Duff live upon the said land in the house where I now do and if at any time they shall slight or neglect the publick Friends that come to visit us then my will is that the whole Trust shall be in the Monthly Meeting aforesaid...." Various Websites give Duff's date of arrival in Virginia from 1710 to 1717. I recently found this importation into Westmoreland County: 27 FEB 1705/1706 Westmoreland County Order Book, page 6a: states that "Samuel Duchemen came into Court...requested his right....to claim lands for the importation of several persons....William Duff...ordered a Certificate according to Law..." Could this be our William Duff? Below is the first land purchase that I found for Duff in Westmoreland County which indicates that he was a "taylor". Later land transactions indicate that he was a "planter". 21 MAY 1712 WILLS & DEEDS, pages 34 - 40. "Garrett Welch of Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, planter and Caleb Smith of same, planter, to William Duff of Washington Parish, taylor. Lease and Release for 7000 pounds of tobacco 248 acres....plantation commonly called Hawkins' Old Plantation, in Washington Parish, being part of pattent of 1428 acres granted to Robert Alexander.....by Sir William Berkeley, Knight, late Governor of Virginia, lying on the south side of Rosier's dam between land.....Charles Willis.....Edward Taylor ...Wit: Morrice Corbin, E. Turberville. Admitted to Record: ... 25 Jun 1712" I would very much appreciate more information which you could share with me about Duff, Robert Green, Robert McKay and Hite. If you could please document your sources as I have tried to do. William Milam
This is fascinating, I followed this family a bit and finding that he had Quaker connections is terrific. Finding Quaker records in Virginia was problematic for me. Thank you.
