Was that the Phebe Jacobsen "Quaker Records in Maryland" guide to Maryland Hall of Records book that you received from interlibrary loan? If so, it is pretty much an index to microfilm available at the Hall of Records. Those microfilms include weddings, meeting minutes, deaths etc, but it is hard to get a look without going to the Hall of Records. What county, meeting house, and family names are you hoping to find information on? I'm researching Eastern Shore Quaker families and might have some useful sources. ~Craig At 07:34 PM 11/6/2004 -0800, you wrote: >I was disappointed when I received a copy of this book on inter library >loan. Peden, Jr., M.A., 353 pages including index. "Quaker Records of Southern Maryland", Births, Deaths, Marriages and Abstracts from Minutes, 1758 - 1800, by Henry C. Peden, Jr., M.A., 116 pages including index. Both are available at WillowBendBooks.com or 1-800-876-6103 I also have Family Tree Maker CD #178 "Maryland and Delaware church Records" or CD #178 "Delaware and Maryland church Records" I don't remember the exact title. I live in Maryland, although all my Quaker ancestors are from New England. I used to work at a college and had access to a couple of old books they had on early Quakers. What you describe is much what I remember of those books. I don't think there is a source for Maryland that will give you the detail you are looking for. I don't have access to the books anymore, either. I know some of the early records were lost. I remember seeing a reference in one book to a clerk of one of the Meetings who moved to Virginia and took the Meeting records with him. If I remember correctly, he refused to return them until he was paid some money he was owed. I never saw any evidence that he ever returned the records. That's taking a grudge to the extreme! Hello All, First, I apologize to those who may receive this more than once because I am cross-posting to get the best answers. I have many old photos and newspaper clippings from the 1800's and early 1900's which have been passed down stored in shoe boxes and the like. I was thinking of storing them in 3-ring binders inside of Avery page protectors. I will not be pasting or taping them, just placing them in loose. I am concerned that the page protectors may stick to the faces of the pictures and possibly damage them. Does anyone know if this is the case? Thanks. Alan Buckingham

Jeff Palmer (jap@highstream.net) wrote: "I know some of my Quaker ancestors also faced outrageous examples of persecution. It would be interesting to read a compilation of such stories - sort of a "Besse's Sufferings" for America. Does such a thing exist?" Besse included America in his extensive (though certainly far from complete) COLLECTION OF THE SUFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE CALLED QUAKERS. Sessions of York has been reprinting this work in sections. One of the sections already out is subtitled, "America - New England and Maryland; West Indies- Antigua, Barbadoes, Jamaica and Nevis; Bermuda." (Punctuation added for clarity). It has a surname index, but unfortunately no every name index. The text pages are actual reproductions (much reduced in size from the hugh original pages) of the original 1753 edition. The period covers varies from one colony to another but begins with the first Quaker missionaries to America about 1656 & in a few cases goes up to the 1690s. It costs 18 Pounds Sterling in London but one should expect to pay around $40 or more in the US from one of the Quaker book stores such as Quaker Hill Bookstore in Richmond, IN or Friends General Conf Bookstore in Philadelphia. I have no connection with this book but have found it a valuable resource for Quaker history and genealogy. There are some other important treatments of Friends sufferings for their faith in standard histories of Quakers in various parts of America. There are particularly good accounts of Virginia, New York, & North Carolina. What comes through in all these accounts is that again and again, Friends risked their incomes, personal safety, freedom, and lives for their faith and the right to exercise it, and in the process laid the foundations of liberty upon which the rights of the citizens of the United States, Ireland, Great Britain, and other democratic nations are based. Understanding what one's ancestors endured for their faith and how God worked powerfully through them puts things in an entirely different perspective, and perhaps even opens us to considering if we might also find the Quaker faith to be something to give such deep meaning to our lives, as well. Thank you Jean for the story of Elizabeth Beals (minister). It was thrilling to read of another ancestor. I too am descended from the Beals. There is a Henry Maddock mentioned on page 851 of volume 5 of /Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy/ (Elk Run, Ohio, Monthly Meeting). He was born 1813,11,8, son of "Nathan, Preble Co., O., s Samuel, dec, & Rachel, m Sarar ------". "Nathan m 2nd 1817,11,10 at Elk Mtg, Martha Mendenhall, Preble Co., O., wd Elijah, dt William & Ann Miller". An entry dated 1812,11,7 states "Sarah & ch, Joseph & John, rec in mbrp", so evidently before that date, they were not members. On the same page an entry dated 1833,7,20 states "Henry con mou", which means Henry Maddock appeared before the meeting to apologize for having married a non-member. Usually someone making such an apology would retain membership. Further down, still on the same page, is an entry dated 1856,4,24: "Henry & w Phebe, gct Salem MM, IA." Gct (granted certificate to) would indicate a transfer of membership. On page 828 of the same volume, (still in the Elk Run MM section) we find the family of "Richard [Brown], s Mercer & Sarah, b 1767,10,2; m Mary Embree, dt John & Sarah, b 1769,5,27". Among their children is Phebe, b 1811,3,29. On page 830 we find that "Phebe Maddock (form Brown) con mou" on 1833, 6,15. Page 426 (Newberry, Ohio MM) shows a list of children of Richard and Susannah Puckett, including Tamer, b 1835,12,2. On page 1044 of volume 1 of EAQG (Wrightsborough, Georgia MM) we find an entry giving the birth dates of the children of Samuel and Rachel Maddock, which include "Nathan b 8-10-177-[torn]" It seems likely this should be 1778, as the date above is 2-23-1777, and the one following is 12-19-1779. Susannah Beals married Richard Puckett in 1829 at White River MM, Randolph County, Indiana. Records there also show that Katherine Beals and daughters Susannah, Elizabeth, Hannah, and Mahala were received into membership on 10-15-1828 on certificate from Newberry MM, Ohio. Evidently this is from the minutes of the women's meeting, for Newberry minutes (EAQG 5:373) show that on 1828,7,24, a certificate was issued to White River for "Catharine & ch, Susannah, Elizabeth, Samuel, Amos, Mahala, Rachel, & Daniel". On the same page we see a marriage on 1827,2,1 between Jacob Beals, son of Daniel and Katherine of Clinton County, Ohio, and Charity Hockett. EAQG 5:221 (Fairfield MM, Ohio) shows two entries dated 1808,1,30. The first shows that Daniel Beals, the younger, was disowned for marriage contrary to discipline. The second shows that Katherine Beals condemned her marriage contrary to discipline. EAQG 1:1043 (Wrightsborough MM, Georgia) shows the family of Mercer and Sarah Brown, including son Richard, b 10m-2-1767. 1:1047 shows that on 1785,3,5, Mercer and Sarah Brown were received on certificate from Fairfax MM, VA, sent on by Bush River MM. EAQG 6:476 (Fairfax MM, Virginia) says of Mercer/Messer Brown: "b 7-5-1740; rem[oved] to S.C. 1784; s of Richard and Mary (Norton) Brown, of Fairfax MM, Va.; rpd 1mo-1764 as being engaged to a young woman not a mbr of our society, was precautioned & left for a trip to Carolina; she met him on the way & they were m by a Priest; he was dis 31-3-1764." In 1770, he regained his membership, and his wife and three children (including Richard) became members as well. The full minute was posted to quaker-roots in 2000: <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/QUAKER-ROOTS/2000-11/0974174113> On the next page we find an account of Richard Brown "b 31-1(Mar)-1693 O.S. d 10-2(Apr)-1745 O.S., s Wm, the Immigrant, by his 2nd ws, Ann (Mercer) Brown, dec, West Nottingham, Md." He married 3 times, his third being on "14-8(Oct) 1733 O.S., at W. Nottingham, Md., Mary Norton, dt Edward, dec, of Co. Armagh, Ireland". EAQG 1:1019 (Bush River MM) shows the family of John and Mary Embree, including Mary, b 5-27-1769. According to Robert Ambler's /Embree Footprints/, this John Embree was born in 1721 in New Jersey, son of Moses and Mary () (Spragg) Embree. (Ambler quotes Little Egg Harbor MM, NJ, birth records.) Moses Embree was born at Hempstead, New York, son of Moses and Mary Embree. Moses, Sr., born at Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, on 16 Dec 1652, was in turn son of Robert and and Mary (Bassett) Embree. Ambler makes a stong case that Mary Bassett was born at Stamford, Lincolnshire, England 21 Dec 1617, daughter of John and Margery Bassett. Jack, Quaker families were not obliged to shun those who lost their Quaker membership. Quaker worship services were open to the public, and disowned members often continued to attend worship.
