I read all the postings for Quaker Roots as my maternal grgrandfather Hoag was Quaker. I think my Grgrandparent Teets were not Quaker, They did name a son Edward Coffin Teets. Can it be there was a Coffin family in the Teets line or maybe the Terry or VanPatten line? Does anyone have any Teets, Terry or VanPatten in their Coffin family? These families all NY 1700 and 1800's. This pertains to a mailing from Jean Leeper dated 2/04/2004 in which she asks where Linden MM was located. Linden Meeting was located in the town of Linden in Linn Township, Dallas County, Iowa. It is only a mile or two from the Guthrie County, IA border. Linden Meeting was organized in 1882, apparently as a Preparative Meeting of Linn Monthly Meeting, which also included East Linn Meeting which evidently met in a schoolhouse near the East Linn Cemetery, a mile or more north of the town of Redfield, Iowa. East Linn Meeting seems to have been of short duration, and the Monthly Meeting continued as Linden Monthly Meeting centered at Linden. Linden Monthly Meeting was laid down in 1949. I believe that the meetinghouse has been remodeled as a private dwelling. Linden Monthly Meeting was affiliated with Bear Creek Quarterly Meeting of Iowa Yearly Meeting (FUM). In my files I have the following item reported by J. H. Mills in his column, "East Linn Record", for the weekly edition of the _Redfield Record_, published at Redfield, Iowa , Jan. 11, 1884: The Friends of Linn held their regular monthly meeting at the schoolhouse on Saturday, a good turnout and an interesting time was had. Preachers J. M. Coffin and Abel Holloway with our Samuel for good measure. The "Samuel" to whom reference was made seems to have been Samuel Hockett, a Friends minister and pastor, with family connections with the Hocketts of Salem Friends Meeting in Henry County, Iowa. - Herbert Standing, Earlham, Iowa.

Samuel, born 1749, was married twice. Deep River MM p 779 of HEQG lists all of the children by each marriage and wives first names. also page 532 New Garden Meeting says 1774, 10, 29 Samuel and wife and dt. rocf Nantucket MM, New England, dated 1774, 9, 26 I can not document myself but familyserch.org says the first wives last name is Carr and that marriage in Nantucket took place 29 Nov 1770. She was born 3-22-1752 and died 1-2-1791. They had eight children He married Mary Macy 1792-3-8, as you say. They had three children. Dear Paul and Violet, Thanks you for your help. Paul with the data you sent me, I then went to the HEQG for North Carolina and now have the line back to Samuel and Miriam Coffin in Nantucket, Mass. William, born 1720, Samuel and Miriam's son went to North Carolina in 1773. Wm's son, Samuel born 1740 married Mary, their son John born 1778 is John M's father. I noticed that you have John M Coffin's first wife dying in Linden, Dallas County, Ia. The record for Cedar Creek says 10-8-1896, John M. (minister) rocf from Linden MM. Can anyone tell me exactly where this meeting was? I am sorry Paul I can not help you with his children. If I uncover something in Iowa Quaker records I will let you know. I am not related but wanted some information on his family and line for my book I am working on. He was the assistant minister and Tamar Maddock was the minister. To Jean Leeper, or whomever, Pls help me...you said that Samuel and Mary's son was born in 1778???????? According to EQG, Deep River MM, Vol.1, Pg 804, Samuel & Mary were md 1792, 3, 8. What's gone wrong here? It does seem a little out of whack that they weren't md and had children until they were over 50 yo????? Thanks for helping me get this straightened out. I am looking for a James or a John Adamson. James was jailed in Ireland in the 1670's for attending Quaker meetings. He was from Cork. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Comstock" <ri1654@earthlink.net> To: <QUAKER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2004 6:13 PM Subject: RE: [Q-R] Irish Quakers > Ron, > > I'm working on a project (voluntarily) for the Bates Association on some of > the group of people who settled Newton Colony in New Jersey. Hello Judi: From "Index to North Carolina County Maps: Davie, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry & Yadkin. by Dr. A.B. Pruitt, Copy 1988" This is an index to the Hughes maps for the counties identified above. Williams, Andrew. GU D3 1795, D4 1795 Both of these are in Guilford County. D3 is southeast of Greensboro and Andrew Williams is shown as owning land near Enoch Mach Mill, south of Dun Settlement Road. D4 is directly east of D3, in this quadrant, Andrew Williams is located adjacent to, and south of Quaker Road. From the map, it's impossible to say whether this was land owned by one man or two men of the same name, both in 1795. Hope this helps, Saralie Northam, Banks, Oregon ----- Original Message ----- From: MsJudi756@aol.com To: QUAKER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2004 5:33 PM Subject: [Q-R] re:land transactions in Guilford Co. Ron, I'm working on a project (voluntarily) for the Bates Association on some of the group of people who settled Newton Colony in New Jersey. I don't have all the names since I am primarily working on the Bates families, but I have some other limited information. Are there particular names you are interested in so I can look through my files? I don't have time at the moment to summarize what I know of this colony, but I will try to get back to you in a day or two with a summary. It's a busy weekend and I just logged on to email for a few minutes. In 1896 a John M Coffin came to Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting, in Henry County, IA as an assistant pastor. He also was a pastor at Pilot Grove in Lee County, Iowa. I believe he was married twice. He is buried in Cedar Creek Cemetery. Records say he was born 1824 and died 1st month 2nd 1905. His wife Mary M Coffin died Aug 2, 1904. Membership records do not tell me anything about him nor do the minutes. Does anyone have him in their Coffin files?
