    3. Hello Tom: Thank you for taking the time to look for my William Henry LEE. By 1818, my William Henry LEE was in Clinton Co., OH. He moved to Vermilion Co., IL in 1829, where he died. I am not even sure he was Quaker. But since there were many Quakers around Wilmington, I cannot ignore the possibility. Thanks again, -- Dennis M. Kowallek kowallek@iglou.com ******************

    3. Violet Moore Guy, Unfortunately (from my point of view), the Nantucket Meetings deposited most of their records with the Nantucket Historical Society and only a portion of the records were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah. Here is the reference to the three Nantucket Island monthly meetings in my web site: http://www.quakermeetings.com/search_display?MeetingName=Nantucket&Count y=&StateOrProvince=Mass&generalSearchWord= [two-line URL] I heard once that the Nantucket Historical Society made microfilm copies for the New England YM archives at the Rhode Island Historical Society of the large records deposit in the 1940s but no longer allows microfilming. Because I do no people genealogy, I cannot state the scope of the LDS microfilm coverage on reels 014776-79, 909501-04, and 912137-42. Tom Thomas C. I subscribe to QUAKER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com, so searched their Archives to find you. Where/How do I obtain the Quaker Records for NANTUCKET MM, NANTUCKET, MA? I descend from most of the Original Settlers, especially Line D - LT. John Coffin, s/o Tristram & Diones (Stevens) Coffin; and from William and Priscilla (Paddock) Coffin, whose records were transferred in 1773 to New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC. I need to find these people in Nantucket records, if possible. Thank you. Violet Moore Guy vmguy@gmpexpress.net 12/09/2004

    1. RE: [Q-R] William Henry Lee
    2. Tom Hill
    3. I have reviewed my typescript of the first men's minutes [1808-1848] of Newberry MM, Friendsville, Blount Cty., TN. As notes, there are many Lees referenced there. I find several references to Ephraim Lee in the early years, then Nathan Lee and three children are admitted. On December 4, 1813, John Lee and four sons, including a William, were received on a certificate from Back Creek MM, North Carolina (perhaps a wife and daughters would be reflected in the women's minutes). At the August 4, 1821 session, both a William Lee and a Samuel Lee requested certificates to the Springfield MM, Indiana, which were approved and signed September 1, 1821. In 1824 John Lee received a certificate to the same meeting. This timing raises questions whether this is the William Lee referenced in the earlier messages; I would doubt it unless the transfer was actually to the Springfield MM in Adams Township, west of Wilmington, Clinton County, _Ohio_, and that contradicts the several Newberry MM references to Springfield Meeting, Indiana, in the same period of time. In 1832, Newberry MM granted a certificate to another William Lee "expecting to reside within the verge of some of friends Meetings beyond the Ohio river & has requested a copy of a minute Seting forth his right of membership with which this meeting unites. he being a friend in unity amongst us the Clerk is directed to furnish him with a copy of this minute". At about the same time Nathan Lee and family were given a certificate to Whitewater MM, Richmond, Wayne Cty., Indiana. In January 1836, "William Lee presented a paper to this meeting condemning his misconduct in accomplising his marriage contrary to discipline & also for using profane language which was read and accepted". Ephraim Lee continues to receive appointments to committees and as a representative to the Quarterly Meeting right up to the end of the volume. Tom Thomas C. Kowallek dated 12/05/2004, which was prompted by my mailing pertaining to the Madden surname. Dennis Kowallek has been searching for some years for the ancestry of William Henry Lee (1798-1855) who was married near Wilmington, Ohio in 1818. The only William Wade Hinshaw abstracts which I have at hand are those pertaining to Meetings in South Carolina and Georgia which are included in a small book edited by the Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. _ Quakers in South Carolina_. The only Lee mentioned in this book is a Francis Lee in the Pine Tree Hill settlement at Camden, S.C. a non-Quaker who came to the settlement in 1752. In searching the Quaker-Roots Archives, it appears that there were a number of the Lee family who were Quakers in the Cane Creek and Spring Friends Meetings in North Carolina in Colonial times. In doing research for Marjorie Morgan's _Hugh Laughlin and Mary Harlan_ genealogy, it became very clear to me that there was a substantial migration from particularly the Spring Meeting area to eastern Tennessee in the 1790-1800 time frame, and there are several with the Lee surname listed in this genealogy. Abstracts of the Cane Creek and Spring Creek Monthly Meeting records are included in Volume 1 of Hinshaw's _Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy_ and abstracts of east Tennessee and southwestern Ohio Meetings are included in Volume 5 of Hinshaw, if I remember correctly. I am under the impression that all of the early east Tennessee Monthly Meetings may not be included in this compilation. ----- These are the sources I have in mind which might give some clue to the ancestry of William Henry Lee. - Herbert Standing.

    3. RootsWeb Review: RootsWeb's Weekly E-zine 8 December 2004, Vol. 7, No. 49, Circulation: 816,285+ (c) 1998-2004 RootsWeb.com, Inc. http://www.rootsweb.com/ ^^^^^^ New Bill Will Close Records to Genealogists HR10, which was mentioned in the 13 October issue of RootsWeb Review, has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The amendments suggested by David Rencher in his letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, were NOT incorporated into this legislation. Thus, the terms of HR10 will now be considered by the Senate, as part of S.2845. If S.2845 becomes law, as now written, family historians will face some real challenges in attempts to obtain birth records, even on long- deceased individuals. Specifically, what genealogists need to do is suggest to their lawmakers the addition of Sec. 3061(b)(1)(A)(iii) that would read: "who is alive on the date that access to their birth certificate is requested." This addition would clarify that the legislation (soon to be law) applies ONLY to birth certificates of CURRENTLY LIVING PERSONS. If you do not know your U.S. Senator's e-mail address, you can find it at http://www.senate.gov/ This bill can be found online at http://thomas.loc.gov/ Put in S.2845 (in the bill number window) and then select item No. 3; and go to Subtitle B--Identity Management Security; Chapter 2--Improved Security for Birth Certificates. * * * For your information! . 3. What an informative history and commentary on the Quaker migration, Herbert Standing! I had seen your posts on some of my Quaker lines before, and I admire your knowledge on Quaker issues and history. I appreciate the effort you invest to help us find our Quaker ancestors. I am also a descendant of Charity Wright and Isaac Cook, through their son, (Marion) Wright Cook b. 1778. I believe my Cooks followed the migration from PA>NC>SC>OH>IN>KS>WA. Wright's grandson, David Marion Cook, married in 1879 Frances Rebeckah Madden in Blue Mound, Osage Co., KS. Frances Madden's father and ancestors follow chronologically to the earliest probable one: John Chesley Madden b 1828 Jackson Co., TN, moved to Boone Co., MO William Madden b. abt 1807 TN or NC, lived in Jackson Co., TN, moved to Boone Co., MO Possibly Alexander Madden b. abt 1781 NC, lived in Orange Co., NC, then migrated to Jackson Co., TN Possibly John Madden of Orange Co., NC (These last two I cannot prove--they just fit by name, dates, and locations.) I also found Barnabas Madden b. 1733 England, of Birmingham Twp., Chester Co., PA. "An English soldier under Braddock who disappeared while hauling war supplies." Could he have been a "friend of the Friends," as you say, or perhaps married into the Quaker faith in Chester Co.? Who were his children, besides perhaps George b 1759? Could John of Orange Co. (listed above) have been his son, also? The migration patterns of these Madden branches seem to coincide with the Quaker migrations of the 1750-1850 era as Herbert narrated in his post. These are just a few of the Madden mysteries to be unraveled. Please, any of you with Madden information, contact me at linsmith@toledotel.com . I have no source of research, other than the internet. I live in a secluded community with no library access. Linda Smith

    3. I have a copy of the Brinton Genealogy and supplement. There are many many Marys. Do you know the name of her husband? That would help locate her in these compilations if she is listed!! I think her maiden name was Brinton. Were there any Brintons that were Quakers living around the Fayette County, PA area in that time frame? Thanks for your help.
