    1. re: Vale
    2. For Mike Vale's 12/21/2004 query, Following is the info from Lydia Anne Vale Leffler's 1913 book "The Genealogy of the Vale and Garretson Descendants." This lists only the children of Jacob Vale and his second wife, Catherine Jones. I'm assuming Alonzo Columbus Vale was a child of Jacob's first wife, Olivia McCarty. "Jacob Vale, son of John, son of Robert Vale, married first, Olivia McCarty; second Catherine Jones. Jacob Vale was born the sixth month, third day, 1808; died the eleventh month, twenty-eighth day, 1880; married the tenth month, ninth day, 1850, Catherine Jones." Their children: John Franklin, b. Jan. 22, 1855; mar. Iona Shaw. Caroline M., b. Apr. 8, 1857; mar. Daniel Woodley. Erastus A., b. Jan. 17, 1859; "married December 26, Alice Smith." Jacob C., b. Mar. 22, 1860. Clara E., b. Oct. 11, 1862; mar. Dec. 9, 1886, Charles Morris Minnie R., b. May 24, 1865; mar. July 26, 1883, Charles Shaw; 2nd. "July 14, 1812" (prob. should be 1912) James C. Stout. Elizabeth C., b. Oct. 11, 1867; mar. Feb. 19, 1896, Ira C. Walton. William E., b. Dec. 5, 1869; mar. July 26, 1902, Iris Kinsey. "The widow of Jacob Vale, Mrs. Catherine Jones Vale of Pekin, Illinois, is still living. Their children have in their possession a silver brooch which was owned and worn by Robert Vale." Hope this is of some help. Bob Cooke

I am searching for information on Bryant Worrell (Worrall) who was born in North Carolina c 1794. Bryant may have been the errant son, or grandson, of a Quaker. His occupation was that of wheelwright while living in Alabama c. 1840. I note that one John Worrall of Chester County, PA, a Quaker, was of the same occupation. John Worrall c. 1730s would have been of an age to be Bryant's grandfather or great grandfather. It is a long stretch, but we have been unable to find Bryant's ancestors for a number of years. 3. Many years ago when I was comparing Clayton lines with a college friend with the surname Clayton, he gave me a copy of a publication that verifies the information you give, that John Clayton married Alice, and had a daughter Rachel who married Michael Newbold. This information is from "The Quaker Yeomen" Volume 7, number 1, Spring 1980. This seems to be a distinctly different Clayton line, sometimes referred to as the "Swarthmore Claytons". 2. Mike Vale
    3. I am doing research on the Vale family. Here is a brief breakdown: Robert Vale, born in London 1716, died 1799 and buried at the Warrington Pennsylvania Meeting house. He captained a ship bringing to Quakers to America and was given land in PA. Married to Sarah Buller. John Vale, born in Pa Dec. 30, 1760. He and his second wife Deborah moved to Clarkson, Ohio in 1814. Jacob Vale, born June 3 1809 died Nov 1880. Married to Olivia McCarty. Moved the family to illinois. They may have ended up in Iowa after living in Illinois. Alonzo Columbus Vale, my great grandfather, born in Ohio 1841. The family moved to Edgar County, Illinois. Alonzo and his wife Mary Ellen Cain moved out of Edgar County sometime after 1880 to an unknown location. Jacob Alonzo Vale, my grandfather, Born Nov 12, 1878 and died Aug 1, 1948 in Illinois I live near Clarkson, Ohio and have some photos of the old meeting house. Some of the graves are still readable. Thanks, Mike Vale Akron, Ohio

Excerpts from "Pioneers of Old Monocacy: The Early Settlement of Frederick Co., Maryland 1721-1743 by Grace L. Tracey and John P. Dern, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1987 page 3 of 6: George Williams, a Welsh Quaker who signed the 1742 petition to divide Prince George's Parish, had no land surveyed or patented in the Frederick County area. He may even have lived a little south of Monocacy Quakers when his son Richard Williams was born in their area in 1726. The records of the New Garden Meeting of North Carolina on December 11, 1746 reported the marriage of Richard Williams and Prudence Beals, daughter of John Beals," of Monoquosy, Prince George's County in Maryland or Virginia." "Geographically, John Beall was also not living in the Quaker area, but his religious association linked him there. Not to be confused with the Beall Family of southern Maryland, he was a Pennsylvania Quaker, the son of Robert (??-JTR) Beall, and lived on the west side of Catoctin Creek, along the Potomac. His land "Chance" was surveyed on January 12, 1732/33. It was probably his son Thomas Beall who married Sarah Ancrum. The list of witnesses to thismarriage is especially interesting for its identification of a number of the Quakers from Monocacy: Oliver, Thomas, Mary and Elizabeth Matthews, Francis Henley, Amos Jenny (Janney), Evan Thomas, John Wright, Sarah Beals, Hannah Ballenger, Susanna Moon and Mary Tannyhill". ^^^ These are Quaker BEALLs and Quaker THOMAS families: I descend from Quakers, John III & Margaret (HUNT) BEALS and Margaret's parents are William HUNT md. 3. I have an index of land grants for Guilford Co., NC, for 1778-1934, and there is no Andrew WILLIAMS listed. There are several WILLIAMS heads of households in the 1790 census for Guilford Co., but none named Andrew. However, in the 1800 census, there are two men in Guilford Co., NC, named Andrew Williams. I hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "kathryn young" <kmyoung@netnitco.net> To: <QUAKER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 17, 2004 6:32 PM Subject: Re: [Q-R] re:land transactions in Guilford Co. > Ms Judi - On your search for land transactions; I don't have a way to look > it up myself, but can give you a lead on that. 1. Quaker Roots????

    3. I have been very interested in the comments concerning folks from Chester Co. PA and Fayette Co. PA. My husband has deep roots in Fayette Co. and Chester Co. also. One of the Fayette Co. lines is the Brownfield family who settled in the Fayette Co area after the Rev War. Another family is the Mathias Chipps family. Mathias' son, David married Susannah Thompson, dau. of Robert Thompson and Tacy ?. Susannah and David Chipps left Fayette Co somewhere between the 1850 and 1860 census where they are found in Grundy Co. Mo. From Grundy Co. list of permenant deaths, Susannah's birth place is given as Chester Co. PA. I have been searching Chester Co. for some clues or leads and it appears that there is a close connection to the Baileys who were also in Fayette Co. but came from Chester. These famlies may have been Quaker. From a 1868 Fayette Co. court document, Robert and Tacy Thompson's other children were: Martha m. Samuel Sutton, living in Jackson Co. Iowa; Ellen m. John Coons, living in Hamilton Co. Ohio; Eliza m. Samuel Earnest, living in Anderson Co. Kansas; Jane m. ? Sutton, living in Fayette Co. aand Amanda m. Robert Bailey, living in Fayette Co. Would anyone have any comments or suggestions. Thank you very much. Patsy Hand

    3. Dale, I see someone has already answered as to the parents of Hugh Mills, husband of Jemima Hodgson, and I can add nothing on individual genealogy. This query would have been easier to address if you gave county and state for each bit of existing data. For example it brought to my mind Solomon Hodgson in southwest Ohio; I found a "Solomon Hodgson" listed on the deeds for the property of Lees Creek MM in Highland County, Ohio [1817-1831]. 1. John Dillon to Solomon Hodgson, Evan Evans, James Rees & John Thornburgh, Trustees for Lees Creek Worship; 1812/07/29; T.D.B. 6, pp. 400-401. 2. Solomon Hodgson, Evan Evans, James Rees & John Thornburgh to James Smith, John Green, Hezekiah Hodgson & Zenas Carey, Trustees of Leescreek Monthly Meeting; 1830/09/09; D.B. U, p. 1; T.D.B. 10, pp. 497-498. Tom Thomas C. I am hoping someone in this group can help. I have a Jemima Hodgson who married a Hugh Mills on Aug. 23, 1827. I would like to know the parents of Hugh. Also if anyone is familiar with this couple and might know the names of their children. Additionally Jemima's parents were Solomon Hodgson and Elizabeth Mills. I would also like to know the parents of Elizabeth. Solomon & Elizabeth married Sept. 9, 1804 in North Carolina. Thanks, Dale in California

    1. RE: Quaker records from Friendsville, TN - MOODY
    2. Tom Hill
    3. Michael, I generally have not transcribed monthly-meeting records, just quarterly-meeting records to help me trace monthly-meeting establishment and discontinuance. My Friendsville transcriptions resulted from my dismay that several volumes of records stored in a vault at the Friendsville MM meetinghouse were damaged in a flood in the 1960s or 1970s. About 1979 I had my secretaries start the transcriptions and then I proofed and corrected them. For a few volumes I also used old WordPerfect 5.1 software to generate a family-name index. I believe I have donated a copy of each of the transcriptions to the Genealogical Society of Utah for the LDS microfilm collection and to most of the major Quaker libraries (Swarthmore, Haverford, Guilford, Earlham, Wilmington College of Ohio). Here are the minute typescripts I can identify in my files, with the contents copied from the cover page: MEN'S MINUTES NEWBERRY (ALSO NEWBURY) MONTHLY MEETING FIFTH MONTH, 1808 TO EIGHTH MONTH, 1848 [Swarthmore's catalog says I included an index] NEWBERRY MONTHLY MEETING [Men's Minutes] Sixth Month, 3rd, 1871 to Seventh Month, 4th, 1874 [my retained copy is indexed] The note below indicates that I also arranged a typescript of Newberry MM Women's minutes for 1856-1873, but I cannot identify where I might have stored the electronic version. I recall that there were also some typescripts of Maryville MM men's and women's minutes damaged in the flood, but I cannot find copies here or references on my website and you will have to look in one of the on-line indices at the above libraries. The original minute books are generally in Tennessee, with microfilm copies made by the Knox County Public Library in Knoxville (one county north of Blount) and provided at least to Wilmington College and Swarthmore's Friends Historical Library. I do not recall ever hearing that the Genealogical Society of Utah received copies of the microfilm. My website says Friendsville MM has on hand the following volumes of records: "Records known extant: FRIENDSVILLE VAULT: MIN 1808-1848 (ts), 1851-1963 (ts 1871-1874), WOMEN MIN 1856-1873 (ts only), 1878-1892, MEMB 1897-1905, 1908-1948, M&O MIN 1893-1964. WILMINGTON: MIN 1808-1848, 1871-1874, WOMEN MIN 1856-1873." I found in the first volume of Newberry MM minutes that John Woody was admitted to membership on application (not transfer) in 1810 and disowned in 1818 for "accomplishing his Marriage contrary to discipline with a woman that is Supposed to have another husband". I find no more references to him, though in 1842, James Woody was the treasurer of a North Carolina Yearly Meeting fund that was having trouble with its Tennessee assessments. Tom Thomas C. Hi Tom I saw were you had transcribed some of the Newberry MM records, Friendsville, Blount City, TN. Were might I find these records. Would you think or know if the women's records are still around. Mary (Lindley) Woody 1717-1795, wife of John Woody and brother of Thomas Lindley 1706-1781. My notes were that Mary (Lindley) Woody moved from near the Spring MM in (now) Alamance Co., NC. to live with her son John Woody in Friendsville, Blount Co. TN. She was a Quaker all her life, although for a time she was disowned for marrying John Woody who wasn't a Quaker. She was an early member of the Cane Creek MM of which the Spring MM was a branch. I would sure like to know if there was any mention of her in the Quaker records around Friendsville. Here is John Woody and Mary Lindley's entry in my tree, if it is any help. <snip> Thanks in advance for any help. Michael A Woody
