    1. QUAKER RECORDS OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND, 1658 - 1800 - Look-Up
    2. Violet O. Guy
    3. Lily Martin: I have gone back to the St.Mary County Memorial Library, Leonardtown, MD at your request to look up a Mr. Leach, father of James W. Leach b. 1802, MD. You advised that versions of spelling of Leach could be LEACH-LEECH-LEITCH. and that I should also look for BAIN, which was possibly the name of the child's mother. "QUAKER RECORDS OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND" Births, Deaths, Marriages and Abstracts from the Minutes, 1658-1800 by Henry C. Pecen, Jr., M.A. In the Index of the above book, I found one name, "Jon. Leach" in a Quaker Marriage posting in Southern Maryland, namely the marriage of Nehemiah Birckhead, of Anne Arundel County, m. on 24th day of 6th month 1712, to Margatrett Johns, of Calvert County, at Clifts Meeting House. Jon. Leach was one of the witnesses. This is ALL that I could find. This could be a relative or just another person by the name of Leach. "Jon." does seem to be a common abreviation of some name plus there was a certain amount of illiterace at that time. Send me your address: I did make photocopies of the 1) Title page, 2) page 21 of the Quaker Marriages of Southern Maryland section, and 3) The Index, which seems quite inclusive for I check out LEACH and then other names in unrelated areas of these Quaker Records. Let me know where to snail-mail the photocopies. Violet Moore Guy vmguy@gmpexpress.net 01/06/2004

I think it was normal to do this as my Quaker Bull Family changed their surname to Talbert in 1805 and all born prior to 1805 are shown with the middle name of Bull. I do have 3 photos of David Adcock Emery and his wife Amanda Talbert I am sure the 3 photos were taken at the yearly quaker meetings . if tyey are your relatives and you want to have copies i am glad to share . 1. Joseph Hodgson and wife Hannah
    2. Harguess, Dale
    3. I am trying to determine if this Joseph Hodgson is the older brother of Moses Hodgson the son of John Hodgson and Hannah Ellis (1) Hannah Hodson (2). What I know is that he came from Pennsylvania and settled in Guilford County North Carolina in the mid to late 1700's. I would like to know the maiden name of his wife Hannah and if they had any children. Also, if indeed he is the brother of Moses Hodgson. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dale

    1. Re: Signatures on Quaker Marriage Lists
    2. Recently there has been several postings on this site with questions regarding the signatures on marriages held at the meeting houses. I finally went through some of my "stuff" I had set aside, to review for a later date, and found what may answer that question. This comes from Heritage Books Archives Quaker Marriage Certificates by Gwen Boyer Bjorkman, 1991, CD-ROM. "The underlined names are witnesses and the third column was for bride, groom, parents, and family." So, as I look at a list from Concord MM, 1742, there are 3 columns. It appears that friends and witnesses signed on the first two columns and bride and groom, parents and family signed on the third column. It does not show ages of anyone, so I would say that everyone present had their name on this document to show they were in attendance and approved of the wedding. I don't know how many had to be witnesses, but on this paper it varied and witnesses were on all three lines. It also appears that the groom was the first person on the third column, then the bride (bride using surname of new husband), then father of bride, mother of bride, father and mother of groom, then family. This was in 1742, so I'm not sure this is true to this day, but thought you would be interested and it may help you with older searches of ancestors marriages.

    1. Medieval Lines of Ruth Large, Bucks County
    2. Concerning my correspondence with Mark Dixon, upon which Stewart Baldwin and Thomas Hamm have commented, I have located copy on the internet of a portion of the book by Alfred R. Justice, _Ancestry of Jeremy Clark of Rhode Island and Dungan Genealogy_. I am satisfied to consider Lewis Latham, Falconer in the courts of James I and Charles I of England, as the father of Frances Latham who first married William Dungan, then married Jeremiah Clark, then married William Vaughn. It appears that some members of this family were leaders among the early Baptists in Rhode Island, while some of the Dungans became Quakers and moved to Bucks County, PA. Concerning a mailing I received from Linda York, who stated that William Large was married to Rebecca ______, at the time that he emigrated from Hingham, Norfolk to Hingman, Massachusetts in 1635 or 1636, I am not prepared to affirm or deny. There seems to be a record that a William Large married an Elizabeth Lincoln in Hingman, Norfolk in 1634. Perhaps there were two men named William Large in Norfolk at that time. I believe that there has been discussion of this matter on a Large Family website, but I am not able to retrieve this discussion at this time. Concerning a mailing I received thanking me for data I had provided concerning the lineage of Ruth Large, I must say that this data was derived from a variety of sources pieced together through the years, only a small portion from the Hinshaw volumes. The data has been derived from copies of wills, from references provided on the internet, and from some New England civil and Quaker records, the original sources with which I am not familiar. Sources should be checked before this data is published in genealogical journals. - Herbert Standing.

    3. I know of no reason to question that Frances (Latham) Dungan Clarke Vaughn was the daughter of Lewis Latham. Lewis's 1653 will, in which he describes himself as "Gentleman, of Elveston, Bedfordshire," names daughter Frances Clarke. The Latham lineage in Alfred R. Justice's book on the Clarke and Dungan families looks plausible, but it is short on dates. Thus I consider it worth exploring, but not certain.
