    3. I am also a descendant of this Abraham Reece. There is some reason to think that Quakers were in demand as guardians for orphans because of their general reputation for honesty and morality. They wouldn't embezzle the orphan's estate, work her to death, etc. Tom Hamm >Hello, All, > >I have two questions: > >Was there a migration from PA to Rowan County, NC, about the same >time as the Boones made this trip, mid 1700s? 3. In the 1930's and early 1940's there was a Boone Family Association that put out a journal with genealogical information and business proceedings of the Association. This Association in conjunction with the American Order of Pioneers annually put out "American Pioneer Records and the Boone Bulletin, A Magazine of History and Genealogy." They also put out some lineage books in 1942 whcih sere compiled by William Boone Douglass. My grandmother was a member of this association because of her ties to the Boones of Franklin County, Virginia who came from Germany and not related to the British Boones that one associates with Daniel Boone. 3. and for those of you who wonder, yes, it's quite possible that the Susan(nah) Boone I'm looking for, was a part of this Bohn(e)/Boone family, as there is a good possibility that my families were in MD and VA for awhile before moving to York and Cumberland counties in PA ... though the Keeny men all state, on census, that they were born in PA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Johnson" <gdjgen@comcast.net> To: <QUAKER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: January 24, 2005 06:19 AM Subject: [Q-R] Re: BOONE family > Comment -- I am descended from the Jacob Boone who died at Boone's Mill, VA, > on March 17, 1814. 3. Thanks so much for the help that was given. Thanks also for the correction regarding the disownment of Abner. I found it online and in the book by Hinshaw and I'll double check it. Probably my transcription error. I have more questions - Were there any naming practices that might be helpful in figuring out parentage? I have the names of Abner Gordon's children and they do reflect the names of the "potential" grandparents and a sister: Henry Clay Ledbetter, Ruth Iddings (I believe this couple is Baptist) John Gordon and Mary Wheeler. Another aspect: It appears that John Gordon and wife Mary (Wheeler) Gordon took in John's nephew's (Nephew was James W. Gordon)children (Seth, John, Mary and James Jones Gordon) about 1823. John's brother Jonathan Wheeler Gordon the children's grandfather died in 1824. The children's mother, Deborah (Jones) Gordon died in Jul 1823, shortly after the birth of James Jones "Jimmy" Gordon. John GORDON and wife Mary, totally raised JImmy as their own and partially raised Seth and John according to the Gordon-Macy Book. The children's father remarried in 1827 and I believe he moved to Indiana. I can see this in the 1830 and 1840 census in Guilford County, NC for John GORDON (alt. Gordan, Gordin, Gorden). I've accounted for all these children . In two census records, I also see an unknown male of Abner's age living with John and Mary Gordon. Another aspect: Abner Gordon was bondsman for James Jones "Jimmy" Gordon when James married. I am unsure if that has significance of not. Thanks again for the all the help. I can see checking for GORDON probate records is my next task. Diane in California

    3. Comment -- I am descended from the Jacob Boone who died at Boone's Mill, VA, on March 17, 1814. A book about the Boone family edited by a Hazel Spraker, is a principal source for the contention that this Jacob Boone was born in Berks Co, PA and therefore related to the British Boones. However, I believe this connection has now been generally discounted. The Jacob Boone who died at Boone's Mill was the son of Johann Diehl Bohne (also Boone or Bone) who came from the Palatines in 1741 to Philadelphia and soon moved down to Frederick County, Maryland. Johann's will mentions Jacob and there is a later indication that Jacob in Franklin County, VA had come from Maryland. 3. I am trying to identify the parents of Abner GORDON, b btw. 1822 and 1827, Guilford Co, NC. Many relatives were involved in the Deep River MM. Through use of the pre-1840 census records I have narrowed the search. I need help with terminology - in 1838 (btw ages 11 and 16) Abner was disowned according to the minutes. Why would a young man be disowned at that age? I know he was a gunstocker at the age of 24, obviously part of the Guilford Co gunmaking industry. If a young person was disowned, was he still considered part of the family? Would a person be disowned if he was an illegitimate child? What action would have been taken against his mother? Would he have kept his mother's name and would the grandparents have raised him? Abner later moved to Hendricks Co, IN then on to Boone Co, IN. I'd appreciate any ideas on things to look for to solve this problem. Diane in CA

    3. If I'm understanding your question correctly, then I should mention that some Boones did remain Quakers. It was the Squire Boone family specifically that left the Quaker faith while still living in Pennsylvania. I believe the primary motive of Squire Boone's move to North Carolina was due to economic circumstances (improving his family's standard of living). 3. Thanks for the resource. The Boones, having been tossed out of their meeting in PA, probably were not seeking another Quaker community, but it would be interesting to see how many others came from the Exeter Meeting. The Deep Creek Meeting had many former PA residents. According to Hinshaw, the same intolerance of marrying outside the religion was applied in the NC meetings. Migrations took place in later years from Yadkin Co., NC, to Indiana and Iowa. 3. I have a copy of A History of Rowan County, North Carolina, by Rv. Jethro Rumple, pub. 1881, which in Chapter V the early settlers in the area of the Yadkin River. Perhaps some of these were Pennsylvania Quakers. Here is a condensed piece from the book: "From the Records in the office of the Superior Court Clerk, in Salisbury, it would appear that the first court was held in June 1753, only a few months after the county was established. The names of the justices who presided at the Courts the first year were Walter CARRUTH, Thomas LOVELATTY, James CARTER, John BRANDON, Alexander CATHEY, Squire BOONE, Thomas COOK, Thomas POTTS, George SMITH, Andrew ALLISON, John HANBY, Alexander OSBORNE, James TATE, and John BREVARD. We know or have some reasons for conjecturing the neighborhoods from which several of these magistrates came. Walter CARRUTH owned lands on the east side of Coddle Creek, adjoining the McKnights in the Prospect neighborhood. James CARTER owned the lands in the southeast quarter of (the town of) Salisbury. John BRANDON lived six miles south of Salisbury near the Concord Road. Alexander CATHEY lived on Cathey's Creek, near Thyatira (Presbyterian) Church. Squire BOONE lived on the Yadkin at Alleman's or Boone's Ford, and was the father of the great hunter and pioneer, Daniel BOONE, of Kentucky. At this place young Daniel spent the days of his boyhood and no doubt often hunted over the hills and through the thickets of the Yadkin. Thomas POTTS probably lived in the Jersey Settlement, where Potts Creek, running into the Yadkin River, perpetuates his name. George SMITH was probably from this same neighborhood. Andrew ALLISON owned large tracts of land on Fourth Creek, a few miles from Statesville. Alexander OSBORNE lived on the headwaters of the Rocky River. John BREVARD was probably in the same neighborhood, a little further west and not far from Beattie's Ford on the Catawba." I hope this is helpful.

Abraham Reece, b. about 1750, came from PA to what is now Yadkin Co. but was then Rowan. Supposedly he came as a bound child -- an apprentice -- although no record has been found yet. He eventually joined the Deep Creek Meeting near Boonville and is buried in that cemetery. Abraham Reece himself took in at least two orphan children to raise. Was this particularly encouraged by the Quakers, or was it just very common in this time period when so many parents died young?
