    1. PA to NC Movement
    2. This pertains to mailings from Elizabeth Carr McKay dated 02/01/2005 and 02/02/2005 in which she asks whether I am acquainted with a cemetery NW of Peoria where members of the Mendenhall, Cox, Clayton, Thornburgh, and Taylor families are buried, who were apparently Quakers who emigrated from Surry County, NC, spending several years in Kentucky and Indiana before arriving in the vicinity of Dunlap in Radnor Township in NW Peoria County and establishing several communities there. This seems to have been the Dickinson (Dickerson) Historical Cemetery. There are Mendenhalls buried in nearby cemeteries as well. I am not well acquainted with that territory, only occasionally passing through Peoria on the way to Indiana and points east. In exploring Peoria County on the internet, I cannot find references to this particular cemetery and can find no mention of early Mendenhall settlers before the Civil War. I would suspect that people with these names, coming from Surry County, NC, through Kentucky and Indiana, might have lost their Quaker identity in Kentucky, where there seemed to be few Friends settlements. I can find no records of Friends Meetings in Peoria County, IL. There was a large settlement of Friends in Vermilion County, IL near the Indiana/Illinois border. These were Friends who had generally followed the migratory trail from the Carolinas and Georgia up to southeastern Ohio, and then across Indiana. These Friends were members of Indiana Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) until Western Yearly Meeting was set off from Indiana Yearly Meeting ca. 1862.----- The Benjaminville Friends Meeting near Bloomington, Illinois was affiliated with Illinois Yearly Meeting (Friends General Conference). These Hicksite Friends, according to my understanding, did not arrive in Illinois until the decade of the 1850's and tended to come from northern Virginia and from Ohio. ----- Herbert Standing.

    3. I'm looking for information on Daniel Travis (Travers, Traverse). My ggggrandfather was Daniel Travis. My gggrandfather was Nathaniel Travis b. 1814 in N.Y. I believe Genesee County. I know Nathaniel was a Quaker when he moved to WI. His death cert. list his father as Daniel. I have tracked a Daniel in Genesee County N.Y. and I pretty sure this is Nathaniel's father. Daniel was born 6 Feb. 1782 in Yorktown Westchester Co, and was orphaned at about 8 years old. He left the orphanage and was bound out until he was 21. He became a Quaker at about age 30. He was married 3 times. First to a Polly Purdy with whom he had 2 daughters. Second Hannah Grant and last Catherine (Poole) Haight. He had six children. I think two of their names were Phila and Armenia. But can't find any reference to Nathaniel. Daniel died in 1877 while living with his grandson Daniel Tibbets. It anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

    3. Searching for info on the above (sometimes shown as Lydia Valerie Wooley) who was born March 17, 1637 and at age 13, married Zephaniah Howard of Dartmouth, Mass. (later Dutchess County N.Y.) who was born Sept. 10, 1731....son of William Howard and Mary Parker, (2nd wife...first wife being Mary Tallman born 1714.) Valeriah (starting at age 14) and Zephaniah had 12 children: William, Elizabeth, Joseph, Pontius, Lydia, John, Elihu, Fannah, Sylvester, Edward, Silas, and Ann. (1753 through 1758). Valeriah died April 28, 1813 at the age of 76. Zephaniah died Oct. 6,1813 at the age of 81. Info from others indicated her parents were Pontus/Pontius Wooley and her mother to be a Palmer. They were connected to the Howland family (through Fanny Howard???) as well as the Sweet family when Sylvester Howard married Lydia Sweet. The Boston Transcript is shown to have info on Valeriah, if anyone has access to it, a lookup would be appreciated. It is in the Gen. Column 1906-1941. Some go so far as to say this Obediah was fictional and did not exist ---- I am seeking some proof of his existance -- copy of his will of 1788 --- proof of marriage --- which John Pike did she marry --- there were several! I don't know if there is any connection with Angeline Hobson or not. Violet you know of course that my connection to the MENDENHALLs is through the HEALDs. I also show a Margaret SELL who married John HUNTER who is my 4th cousin 4X removed. If you follow the cousin line back it terminates with Jonas POTTS my 7X g-grandfather. I have no idea if this helps anybody or if I have just confused every body, but it is good to be back on this list again. It has always been my favorite list. Also looking for info on the Isaac and Clara Boyce family of Raisin Township, Lenewee County, Michigan after 1860. Isaac died before 1880 and Clara married a Wichman in Tecumseh. The family originated in Otsego County, New York. The Isaac Boyce line of this family died out in 1908 when Elon Boyce passed at Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan. Both of these families were also Seneca Indians which should make a difference as there were a limited amount of individuals willing to come to Michigan. Thank you. B Chuck Robinson

    2. Have you discovered the Mendenhall Cemetery NW of Peoria IL, which contains the graves of Mendenhalls, Carrs, Cox es, Claytons, Thornburghs(?), Taylors, etc as well as non-Quaker NC families from Surry Co such as the Gordons? Many spent several years in KY and IND before arriving in Radnor Township, NW Peoria Co. and establishing communities there. My group of Carrs got there in 1838, after many Mendenhalls etc. I have no records of the exact route or timing but would like to know more. The closest Quaker meetings I can find to them were the Hicksites in Benjaminville in Bloomington IL but that was short lived. Many became Presbyterian and much later a Thornburgh was a famous Methodist minister in the city. The town of Dunlap is also nearby. Elizabeth Carr McKay

    1. Quakers in NH and VT.
    2. Hi, after 15 years of searching for our Samuel West line in NY state and not getting anywhere we found out this Sat. that the family line that he has a DNA match to were Quakers that fought in the Rev. War. This might explain why we have hit so many dead ends. Would anyone happen to know the names of the Monthly Meetings that were in NH and VT in the 1700's to 1810? We know Samuel was born between 1755-1767 and he married a Quaker named Margaret Jenkins the was dissmissed in 1789 from the Oblong M.M. in Dutchess Co NY for her marriage to him and then she was reinstated in 1798 and she took a certificate to Danby M.M. in NY. The line that the DNA matched up to ( actually he had 3 DNA matches) is a Daniel Gilman West b.abt 1747 in Kingston NH, he is son of Daniel West & Elizabeth Gordon. Many of the West families connected to these Wests were also Quakers that fought in the Rev. War. It was a very interesting book we found at the genealogy Library in Lansing MI. This is the "clue' we have been looking, now to find out what M.M. they belonged to is our next project. To the best of our knowledge Samuel was no longer a Quaker otherwise why would Margaret be dissmessed for her marriage to him. We are working on this Daniel m. to Elizabeth as a possible set of parents as the list of their children is not complete. The names of children born between 1752 and 1769 are not known and that range fits with the approximate age of Samuel West and that of a William Barber West that he co-owned land with in Plattsburgh NY in 1792. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for listening Fran West Rockford, MI

    1. Boones - PA to NC Movement
    2. In her mailings to the Quaker-Roots website dated 01/23/2005, Violet Moore Guy lists data from a Mendenhall Family Association database which includes the family of Richard Mendenhall (1737-1773), son of Mordecai Mendenhall and Charity Beeson. This data indicates that Richard Mendenhall married Jane Thornbrugh, b. 1737 New Garden, Guilford Co, NC. Richard and Jane were married 24 June 1758,New Garden, Guilford Co, NC. It is stated that Richard Mendenhall was born 01 Nov 1737 In Orange County, VA. It is my understanding that Mordecai and Charity (Beeson) Mendenhall moved from Lancaster County, PA to Berkeley County (now West Virginia) with members of the extended family of Richard and Charity (Grubb) Beeson in 1735/36. Under the leadership of Richard and Charity Beeson, a Friends Meeing was organized called Providence Meeting or "Beesons' Meeting", which was a subordinant Meeting of Hopewell Monthly Meeting, centered near Winchester, VA. Therefore, it is likely that Richard Mendenhall was born in Berkeley County, VA. Mordecai and Charity (Beeson) and family moved to the vicinity of present day High Point in Guilford County, NC about 1751, carrying with them a minute dated the 6th of 3rd mo. 1751 from Hopewell MM to Cane Creek MM, NC. The Mendenhall family became members of New Garden MM, NC when New Garden MM was set off from Cane Creek MM, NC ca. 1754. The Mendenhalls became members of Deep River MM, NC when Deep River MM was set off from New Garden MM . The Mordecai Mendenhall family were probably among the original members of Springfield Meeting, which was set off from Deep River MM as Springfield MM ca 1815. I believe that there is an entry in the 1758 minutes of New Garden MM that Richard Mendenhall and Jane Thornbury were reported married. ---- About 1976, when I was living in the Philadelphia area, I did extensive research to endeavor to ascertain the parentage of Jane Thornbury. I became fairly well satisfied that she was a descendant of Edward Thornbrough whose family first appears in the records of Lurgan MM in northern Ireland. Probably he had been married at least twice. About 1708 he was censured by Lurgan MM for marriage out of unity with the Meeting. Probably this was his second marriage. About 1718 the Lurgan MM rather reluctantly granted him a certificate to settle in the Pennsylvania area. He settled first in Christiana Hundred in northern New Castle County, DE, but didn't get around to presenting his certificate to Newark MM (now Kennett MM) until 1725. About 1727 Edward Thornbrough moved his younger family to Warwick Twp., Lancaster County, PA, where he died in 1734, leaving a will. It appears to me that Walter Thornbrough, one of the older children of Edward Thornbrough, may have rather taken charge of Edward Thornbrough's younger family after their father's death. He had already been a landholder in Chester County, PA. In 1739 he is listed among those who witnessed a Quaker wedding in Berkeley County, VA. There are records of various land transactions of Walter Thornbrough in Berkeley County up to about 1756. Then he appears in Guilford County, NC Quaker records as Walter Thornbrough of Deep River. In North Carolina, hiis family apparently lived in close proximity to the family of Mordecai and Charity (Beeson) Mendenhall. The Thornbroughs and Mendenhalls were probably well acquainted during their sojourn in Berkeley County, VA, and also in Lancaster County, PA. I am inclined to believe that the Lucy Thornbury who married Richard Mendenhall in Guilford County, NC was a daughter of Walter Thornbrough. I cannot prove it. I am not sure of her mother's name. In his earlier years, Walter Thornbrough may have been married to a Hannah Davis. In later years, his wife seems to have been Margaret.----- The other best possibility as to the parentage of Lucy Thornbury is that she could have been the Jean Thornbrough who is mentioned among the younger children in the will of Edward Thornbrough of Warwick, Lancaster County, PA. If so, she would have had to be an infant at the time of Edward's death in 1734. Otherwise she would have been much older than Richard Mendenhall, born in 1737. It is my understanding that there were few Quaker settlers in Guilford County, NC until about 1750, when a large settlement from Chester County, PA and surrounding areas began. Therefore, it is very unlikely that Jane Thornbrugh was born in North Carolina. It is more likely that she was born in Berkeley County (now West Virginia) or possibly in Chester or Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. I am a descendant of Richard and Jane (Thornbury) Mendenhall through their son, John Mendenhall, who married Ruth Brown. --- Herbert Standing, Earlham, Iowa.

QUAKER RECORDS IN GEORGIA: Wrightsborough 1772-1793 Friendsborough 1776-1777" By: Robert Scott Davis, Jr., Compiler Pages 15 & 17 (Page 16 - Map) Records of the Quakers At Wrightsborough, Georgia - INTRODUCTION - "The Monthly Meeting at Wrightsborough was the southernost bastion of the Society of Friends in colonial America and the only significant Quaker community to ever exist in Georgia. The unique history of the now dead town of Wrightsborough has interested numerous scholars and writers. However, despite the mountain of research and writings on this subject, no one has made a detailed study of the surviving records of its Monthly Meeting. As a result, almost every settler who lived in the township has been identified as a Quaker when, in fact the Friends were a minority there from a very early date." "Wrightsbobough Township was settled in 1757 by some forty families of Orange County, N.C by Quaker Joseph Maddock and Jonathan Sell. Many of the Quaker families in this migration had moved as a group frow New Castle [in Delaware, but then under the jurisdictionof Pennsylvania] and Chester County, Pennsylvania, to North Carolina in 1754-1755, The town of Wrightsborough, Georgia, the administrative center of the township, was laid out in 1769-1779. Wrightsborough Township was in St. Paul Parish (after 1777 Richmond County) and is today in Columbia County, (created 1790), Warren County (created 1793) and McDuffie County (created 1870). The town of Wrightsborough was neat present day Thompson." "Religious meetings were probably held among the Quakers at Wrightsborough shortly after their arrival in Geogia. However. the monthly meeting of discipline necessary for the Quaker community to be recognized was not organized until years later and only then after a strange set of circumstances. The nearest quarterly meeting that could have authorized their ;monthly meeting was the Western Quater, which held alternating meetings with Cane Creek and New Garden, North Carolina. In February 1768, the Quakers of Fredericksbuugh Township "on Bush River" in South Carolina appealed to the Western Quater for a monthly meeting. Their request was turned down, as it would be repeatedly, after investigations found the religous practices there to be ubsuitable, although the Quarater did allow Fredericksburough to send representatives to the Quarterly Meeting. On 8 November 1770, the Bush River Quakers, including many of the Quakers of Wrrightsborough, asked for their own monthly meetin, separate from Fredericksburough. Their request was eventually approved and they held their first monthly meeting in April 1772. The first representatives from the new meeting at Bush River to make the long journey to the Western Quarterly Meeting presented a request , on 13 February 1773 that the Wrightsboroubn Quakers be allowed to have their own meenting. Jesse Henly, Moses Mendenhall, and Peter Dillon of the committee appointed to visit the Georgians endorsed the request but the Qarterly Meeting only authorized a meeting of worship. Bush River renewed the request for a Wrightsborough meeting ofdescipome the following August. A committee composed of Zachariah Dicks, John Carter, Jesse Henley, James Mendenhall, William Tinsley, David Brooks, and William Knight reported favorably after an investigative visit to Gorgia and the Wrightsboroough Monthly Meeting, Western Quartly Meeting, North Carolina Yearly Meeing was begun 1773."
