Has anyone who has access to the Quaker records, especially Indiana (Morgan, Hendricks County) seen a record of a divorce or ousting of a William or Obed Morgan and Lydia? The record might be anywhere but Indiana is where they both ended up but in different adjoining counties. There seems to be no record of William's demise or separation that I can find and the 1840 records for WhiteWater Meeting were mysteriously missing when I went to read them at Earlham Collage in Indiana. Thanks to anyone who can shed light on the mystery of William and wife. Susan sbarrett1@sbcglobal.net

>You should not judge history by modern standards. True to a point. Often, when one looks more closely, one finds that people at the time were making criticisms that "modern historians" are also making today. We could say, for instance, that it's wrong to judge George Washington's slaveholding by today's standards. But Washington and John Woolman were contemporaries, and Woolman was very critical of slaveholding. So, who was right on the issue? Washington or Woolman? Mark

And I'm assuming the only reason you suspect a Quaker connection is because of the anti-slavery stance? The German Baptist Brethren were also anti-slavery and I have a German Johannes LEHN (often Americanized to LANE) of York County, PA in my family tree. If I were you I'd take a look at John LEHN/LANE as being your ancestor. Johannes LEHN left a will in York County where he is listed as Jonathan LEHN. He wrote the will 15 April 1775 and it was probated 26 May 1783. The Executor of the will was my ancestor Samuel ARNOLD who was married to Johannes LEHN's daughter Elizabeth. Named in the will are wife: Margaret and children: Peter, John, Catharine, Elizabeth, Hannah, and Mary. Your John LANE of Frederick County, MD could very well be the above-named son of Johannes and Margaret LEHN of York County, PA. As a side note, the German Baptist ARNOLD family was originally from Frederick County, MD--so there are ties to Frederick County for the LEHNs in addition to the close proximity of York County, PA to Frederick County, MD. Johannes LEHN, age 40, was on the passenger list of the Ship Loyal Judith which qualified in Philadelphia 3 Sept. 1742. He signed his own name to the required oaths. Joan
I wondered if someone could help me with look-ups in any records you think appropriate to my need -- I honestly don't know what source(s) to ask about in Quaker research. John LANE (supposedly Scots-Irish, but was always with German families or German-speaking families) was born ca. 1780 in an unknown location. One Bio History on a grandson says John LANE left his parents because they owned slaves. (I understand some Quakers "bought" indentures for servants and other Quakers owned slaves? and these "purchases" are in Quaker Meeting records?) We have NO idea of his parents names (of John Lane' children, we do not have a Daniel, so maybe there is a Daniel ancestor? In grandchildren, we have Henry - so maybe there is a Henry ancestor?) First appears in 1794 Frederick Co MD "with no parents in this State" (which seems to mean they were not dead) -- John Lane is becoming apprenticed to Martin GARVER (GARBER) through the Orphan Court. Martin GARVER lived near Taneytown area of Frederick Co (now Carroll Co). GARVER's home was used as the meeting house for the German Baptists who became known as Church of the Brethren (by name change only in 1908). So we don't know John LANE's religion before 1794. We only know he was associated with the German Baptist Brethren (formed by Alexander Mack) and knew many of the Brethren leaders in Frederick Co MD like SAYLOR, LEATHERMAN, etc. Within 5 miles at Libertytown MD lived Joseph BAKER and wife Mary, with at least 2 children, Phillip and Catherine. Mary signed her name once as Meri BECKAR. Joseph BAKER had a Bible and a "lot of books" in Dutch. We've never determined the religion of the BAKERs, nor where they came from before MD. John Lane met Catherine BAKER and they married in Fred Co MD Jan. 23, 1805. Their first child was born 2 months before they married (John Jr, 1805.); Joseph born 1807; 2 other children born later which were Daniel in 1810, and Mary 1818-? About 1804 some Brethren moved from Fred Co MD to Washington Co PA, where other Brethren also lived. About Oct. 1809 Joseph Baker sold his Fred Co MD land and by the Census of 1810 is in Washington Co PA he/family, in Amwell Twp. By deduction, John Lane and his family are living in the in-law's house (Joseph Baker). John LANE is involved with the Brethren -- he is a founding member of Ten Mile "Society of Christian Brethren" or "German Baptist Brethren" which later is renamed to Ten Mile Church of the Brethren. They met in each other's homes from at least 1750s in the county, used Martin SPOHN's as a meetinghouse in the early 1800s, and by 1832 built the first church building. Nearby was Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Across the Ten Mile creek was a Cemetery said to be a Quaker burial ground, and said to be used in the late 1700s up to to late 1800s. BIGLERs attended the same church as LANE and BIGLERs are buried in this Quaker Cemetery (Franklin Cemetery). Many Brethren were buried there before the Ten Mile Church of the Brethren was built in 1832. Catherine BAKER LANE supposedly died in 1822 and we've never known where she was buried. It's possible she was buried in this Quaker Franklin Cemetery. John LANE lived until Dec. 1844. Assumption was he would be buried with Catherine. I am hopeful with this possible Quaker connection, albeit a slim chance of finding records. My only other clues are -- learning that many of my other families were possibly in New Jersey first (1700s) and by the early 1800s were in Washington Co PA -- Daniel was maybe born near Philadelpia ---*but* in an Ohio Bio/History on another Brethren, it is said that Brethren man was born near "old Philadelphia" in Washington County PA..... no one seems to know of an "old Philadelphia" place in Washington Co PA... We doubt that Catherine was in the real Philadelphia, PA in 1810 to have given birth to Daniel there. Can you suggest anything I could try? Places looked: Oath of Allegience - nothing so far, esp. not knowing a time period or location, or which generation he was... if Brethren in PA, this family might not have signed anyway Will, Probate/Account Deeds Court records Brethren -Church of the Brethren records Road Petition Tax and any of the other usual records.... Judy
Thanks Jerry. Phebe COFFIN is the sister of my GG-Grandnother, Priscilla COFFIN md. Himelius MENDENHALL,. g-grandson of John & Margaret E. (Hunt) Beals. Phebe and Priscilla are brothers of Barnabas Coffin, Jr., who we discussed on Q-R few months ago -- children of Barnabas Sr. & Phebe (Marshall) Coffin, Nantucket, MA>Guilford Co., NC. Per "The Coffin Family" edited by Louis Coffin, NHA, 1862, Stephen Coffin md. Rachel Hunt, d/o John, and Elizabeth Coffin md. Stephen Hunt, s/o John -- these Coffins are also children of Barnabas & Phebe (Marshall) Coffin, so therefore, more of descendents of William & Priscilla (Paddock) Coffin, who migrated into the Heartland! Another Coffin sister, Huldah md. Jesse Stanley and migrated to Indiana, I believe. Judy: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/4038/ Welcome to our Woodward Genealogy Home Page Heald --Martha Heald Woodward (If you go in through the above URL , then Martha Heald Woodward is a LINK! (It was hard to get everything in Plain Text to post to Q-R). http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/4038/Richardjr.html Richard Woodward, Jr Page Richard Woodward, Jr., was the oldest son of Richard and Jane Woodward probably of Cheshire, England, and of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Richard Woodward, Jr. married four times: (1) Esther Davis; (2) Deborah Stanfield; (3) widow Susanna Cureton; and (4) widow Mary Heald. All were proper Quaker marriages documented in Chester County Quaker meeting records. Richard Woodard, Jr. born About 1673 in England died bet 11/7 & 11/17/1752 Chester Co, Pa Esther Davis born unknown died bef 1701 Chester Co, Pa Married: After 3-13-1695 at Concord Monthly Meeting, Chester County, Pa. Their first intention of marriage was proposed at Concord Meeting on the 11th day of 1st month 1695. Their second notice of intent was at Concord on the 13th day of the 3rd month 1695 and "nothing found to obstruct with admonition this meeting left them to proceed in good order of truth." They were probably married shortly thereafter. Children: Esther Woodward born about 1696 Chester County, Pa; married (1)Christopher Wilson, (2)Thomas Wilson Sarah Woodward born about 1698 Chester County, Pa; married Evan Jones Jane Woodward born about 1700 Chester County, Pa; married (1)Joseph Hayes (2)William Wickersham We do not know for sure when Esther Davis Woodward died but Richard would have been expected to wait at least a year before marrying again, so she probably died sometime in 1700, perhaps even as a result of childbirth. The family of Richard Woodward's second wife Deborah Stanfield is documented in Chester County land records in a deed dated 22 June 1713 to Robert Pierson. The land is mentioned as sold "4 February 1703 by Francis Chads & Grace his wife, William Huntley & Mary his wife, Edward Bennett & Sarah his wife, Thomas Hope & Eliza his wife, Isaac Few & Hannah his wife & Richard Woodworth & Deborah his wife to one Thomas Pierson. The land was formerly in the tenure of Francis Stanfield. Grace, Mary, Sarah, Eliza, Hannah & Deborah were sisters & heirs of James Stanfield, dec., who was son & heir of Francis Stanfield, dec." (See Chester 1683 Survey for location of land on Crum Creek.) The ship Endeavor of London, master George Thorpe, arrived 7th month, 29th day, 1683, at Pennsylvania. Among passengers listed were Fran Stanfield and Graas his wife, late of Garton in Cheshire, husbandman, and children, Jam, Mary, Sarah, Eliz, Gras and Hannah (which tells us Deborah was born in Pennsylvania). They also had servants Dan Browne, Thos Marsey, Isa Brookersby, Rob & Thos SidBotham, John Smith, Robt Bryan, and William Redway. (Families who Arrived at Philadelphia, 1682-1687, Penns. Mag., V. 8) The servants listed might be indentured people whose passage was guaranteed by Stansfield, but it indicated the family had money. Some of the Pierson family came on the same vessel. Married: The actual marriage record of Richard & Deborah Stanfield Woodward is missing but at a monthly meeting at the home of Nathanial Parks (Concord meeting) on the 13th day of ye 11th month 1701 "Richard Woodward and Deborah Stanfield appeared at this meeting it being ye second time; and nothing appearing that might obstruct their aforementioned intention - Therefore this meeting have gave them their allowance to proceed according to the good order of truth - This meeting order George Pearce to attend the marriage to see if it be accomplished seemly according to truth and make return thereof to ye next monthly meeting." We can assume then that Richard and Deborah were married sometime between 13 day 11th month 1701 and the 12th month meeting date. Children: William Woodwardborn Chester County, Pa; married Eliza Marshall Elizabeth Woodward born Chester County, Pa; married (1)Thomas Thornbrough (2)Joseph Young Hannah Woodward born Chester County, Pa; married (1)James Shortledge (2)Joseph Underwood Mary Woodward born Chester County, Pa; married George Entriken James Woodward born Chester County, Pa; married Ann Pyle Grace Woodward born Chester County, Pa; married James Millison John Woodward born Chester County, Pa; married Sarah Barnard Richard Woodward III born Chester County, Pa; married Abigail Hayes Deborah Woodward born Chester County, Pa; married (1)William Strode (2)Stephen Harlan When Richard's father died in 1706 he did not leave his land to his eldest son as was the custom, instead leaving it jointly to his wife and his youngest son, probably so that his wife would be cared for. Richard Woodward acquired his own land, a tract of 1000 acres in 1724. He may have owned land before that as he is assessed in 1715 in Bradford Township. There were two Richard Woodward's, cousins, of about the same age so it is difficult to sort out the land.(See the "other" Richard's page.) By the 1753 taxable list one is taxed in East Bradford and one in West Bradford. Our Richard on this page was of Thornbury which was in West Bradford, and he is referred to that way in most records. (Chester County Map) When Bradford Monthly Meeting was set off from Concord Monthly Meeting in 1737, Richard Woodward was designated Elder of the Meeting. Quakers had no paid clergy for their meetings. Their "ministers" or "preachers" were called by God to testify about their faith and often traveled to far places to carry the word. The Elders were in charge of the meetings for worship and watched over the ministers that they did not abuse their calling. The Elders also represented their meeting at Quarterly and Yearly Meetings. Deborah Stanfield Woodward died sometime before 1739. On the 6th day 8th month 1739 Richard Woodward & Susanna Cureton appeared for the first time to request permission to marry before Newark Monthly Meeting. Richard was directed to bring a certificate from Bradford that he was clear to marry, and Jacob Chandler and Samuel Grave were appointed to "inspect the widow's affairs as regards her husband's will." On the 3rd day 9th month they appeared before the meeting again. They were married on the 29th day of 9th month 1739 and it was reported as orderly to Newark Monthly Meeting. Susanna then received a certificate to Bradford Monthly Meeting. The wedding took place at Bradford Monthly Meeting. Family signing the certificate included Thomas & Rachel Martin Woodward, brother and sister-in-law; John Newlin, husband of sister Mary Woodward; Evan & Sarah Woodward Jones, daughter and son-in-law; daughter Elizabeth Woodward Thornbury, Joseph Underwood, husband of daughter Hannah, George Entrikin, husband of daughter Mary, and Thomas Cureton, possibly son of Susanna. Abraham & Mary Marshall, parents of daughter-in-law Eliza Marshall Woodward were among the guests. Daughter and son-in-law Esther & Christopher Wilson were among the guests but did not sign as family. Susanna Cureton Woodward died before 1743 and on the 30th day 7th month 1743 Richard Woodward & Martha Heald appeared before Newark Monthly Meeting. Richard was directed to bring a certificate from Bradford and Thomas & Jacob Chandler were appointed to see "that the will of her former husband be complyed with." This was not a problem as the will of John Heald had been probated on 11/13/1740, enough time passing that its provisions had no doubt been carried out. On the 5th day 9th month Richard & Martha appeared for the second time and were given permission to marry. They were married on the 30th day 9th month 1743 and it was reported orderly to Newark. Martha received a certificate to Bradford Meeting. Martha is named as wife in Richard's will. As was customary he made detailed provisions for his "now" wife. This was usually necessary, since step-children could not be counted on to take care of a stepmother unless so directed in a will and watched over by the courts. This kind of provision made sure that no one wound up indigent and a ward of the court. Richard had evidently prospered as, in his will, his house is called a "mansion" and his acreage a "plantation." There are again some curious things about his bequests. Oldest son William is left only five shillings and no land. Sons John & Richard are left land. Richard had conveyed 253 acres of the southeast corner of his original one thousand acres to William on 6/16/1734, shortly after William married, so this is probably the reason none is left in the will. Son James had died 5th month 1748 so is not mentioned. It may have been James's death that made him aware of his own mortality so he started writing his will in 1748 though he did not sign it until 1752. *Updates 6/22/2001 Added daughter Jane Woodward's second marriage to Wm. Wickersham **************************************************************** Judy: This is one my Mendenhall & Allied Family Webpages.: James Mendenhall was son of Aaron & Rose Pierson Mendenhall. From Genealogy of the Smedley Family - 1682-1901, Gilbert Cope, 1901, page 172 Thomas Garrett (26 Oct 1717 - 16 Jan 1747/48) married Rebecca Sykes. No further information on Rebecca or any data on children. As her daughter was names Sykes, this is clearly from her first marriage, so maiden name not yet known. Judy
Saw this comment: "WOODWARD, Richard 1743.7.30 requested permission to marry Martha Heald, widow" Martha Foden (b. abt 1684 Morley, Cheshire, England, d. May 1755 in Bradford Twp, Chester Co, PA. ) married first 5 Nov 170,1in Cheshire England, to John Heald, son of William and Jane Dunbabin Heald. I have in my notes that she did marry Richard Woodward (John Heald died 1740). WHICH Richard Woodward!!!! Judy
I have noticed that many Quakers were involved with work among the western Indian tribes in the 1870s through 1890s. They included, in Iowa, members of the Beede and Hoag families, also Lawrie Tatum and Brinton Darlington; in Kansas, William Hiatt Coffin, in Nebraska, William P. Burgess and George F. Howell. Plus many others. I have always thought their efforts were benign, befitting their own character and principles. The Quakers worked diligently to get the Government to rescind its policy of Indian extermination. They espoused a program of "assimilation not annihilation." They founded schools for Indian children and taught skills and trades to the adults. In recent research, however, I was unsettled to find that what the Quakers did is being sharply criticized by modern historians: In their opinion, these programs forced Native Americans to adopt the ways of the white man and destroyed their traditional way of life. It appears that in many dimensions this was the result, but I believe the Quakers would have been shocked to be charged with doing something wrong. I believe it was the consensus of the Quakers that this was the best course to save the Indians and it could only be done by eradicating their traditional lifestyle. I would appreciate comments on this subject from those who had Quaker ancestors involved in Indian work during this period, or have done research on this subject. Thanks in advance, Gregory McReynolds Pasadena, California

Zelda Capehart: I was searching University of Virginia Library, for they are excellent resource for genealogy in Virginia; but you will have to search for what you want. At one time, I had a spcific URL that I used. You can also search the Virginia Archives for Vital Records (posted at end of this message).. ************* Berkley County, Virginia became a part of West Virginia, after the Revolutionary War. Here is a website that came up from today's SEARCH! Read the whole thing, as I may have discovered the Morgan family!.least, I found a Morgan connection. http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/wv/berkeley.htm USGenWeb Archives : West Virginia County Index : Berkeley County Berkeley County WVGenWeb Archives Census Records 1810 Berkeley County, VA (now WV) Federal CensusRobert Rellihan 1850 Berkeley County, VA (now WV) Census Indexby S-K Publications 1880 1% Census Samplesubmitted by Al Zopp Family History/Letters ************* I browsed the USGenWeb Archives for Berkley Co., WVa and found a MORGAN -- lived in "valley of Virginia & Winchester " ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/berkeley/bios/morgan.txt (Read USGenWeb regulations on use of this website.) This bio, I must send to my cousin in Washington State, for this could be her LINE -- her parent's did the genealaogy charts that I have. Your post interested me as I am looking for parents & family of Sarah Morgan b. Monomgahlila Co., WVA & married Johnathan Butler, b. Shanandoah Co., VA. They were married in Morgantown, WVA. Sarah Morgan's parents were James Morgan (1755-1822), born Cheat River, WVA md. Hannah Cox , b. in England. Johnathan & Sarah (Morgan) migrated first to OH and then to IN; and in 1852 Sarah went with a son and a grandson West to the Oregon Country -- I do not believe that they were Quakers, but a grandson married my great-grandmother's niece -- so a Mendenhall/Coffin connection there for both the niece & my great Grandmother were Oregon Pioneers --- also, even my father, who was just an infant at time of their migration. The Butler/Morgan is a lateral connection for me. I am familiar with this part of Virginia, as we lived many years in Fairfax County, in Northern Virginia, and our son went to one of the well known Virginia colleges.. I am now living in Maryland, just 2-4 hrs away. We often stop in Orange, VA in our cross continental trips. http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?srch=105&FORM=AS5&q=Virginia+Vital+Records%2c+Archives Virginia Vital Records Archives. -- from a SEARCH http://vitalrecords.accessgenealogy.com/vavital.htm (I have used these.) I had great difficulty running down the dates of existence for the Wilburites in Ferrisburgh Quarterly Meeting in Vermont, so I find this lead very helpful. I would like to know the dates in the Taber article. As to the early Wilburites in Iowa, Hesper MM later became Winneshiek MM. There was a Winnesheik (Wilburite) MM in the 1850s and 1860s: http://www.quakermeetings.com/viewRecord_display?anID=TST2035L and a Red Cedar (Wilburite): http://www.quakermeetings.com/viewRecord_display?anID=TST1549L [both one-line URLs] Later the Ohio YM (Wilburite) established Hickory Grove Quarterly Meeting and a few monthly meetings in eastern Iowa that transferred to Iowa YM (Conservative) in 1918. My Index of Monthly Meetings in North America cites three good sources on the Iowa Wilburites: William Hodgson, The Society of Friends in the Nineteenth Century: a Historical View of the Successive Convulsions and Schisms Therein During That Period (1875), Chapt XIII, p. 226ff; Jones, the Quakers of Iowa (1914), p. 154f; and An Exposition of the Proceedings Which Led to a Separation in Red Cedar Monthly and Salem Quarterly Meetings, with Some of the Reasons Why Friends Pursued the Course They Did (Marion, Iowa 1855). In a short biography of Hannah (Hoag) Battey, in the FRIEND (3 m. 6, 1886): 243-244, he notes: "Narcissa Battey, Hannah's daughter, and Joseph Hoag's granddaughter, . . . married a young man who was a member of the "Smaller Body" in New England. Starksboro Monthly Meeting received from him a certificate in order for the marriage; and gave her in return a removal certificate. For this act of insubordination, Ferrisburg Quarterly Meeting attempted to lay Starksboro Monthly Meeting down. The result was a division. "Not very long after the division, the most of the more conservative Friends removed and settled in and near Hesper, Iowa, and held a meeting. And pretty soon afterward, their old friends and neighbors removed, and settled amongst them, and held another meeting." In another article in the FRIEND (3 m. 21, 1885): 259-260, about Vermont minister Amos Battey, Taber notes: "Sometime after the division in Ferrisburg Quarter, he and his friends removed to Hesper, Iowa. Those composing the other branch [Gurneyite] also removed and settled amongst them, and Starksboro Monthly Meeting was laid down." Hesper is in Winneshiek Co., Iowa. Louis Jones, THE QUAKERS OF IOWA, pp, 70-72, notes that Friends first settled in Winneshiek Co. Iowa, in 1853. In 1855, Salem Quarter (Iowa) of Indiana YM (Gurneyite) set up Winneshiek MM with two preparative Meetings Winneshiek and Springwater. But Jones makes no mention of a Wilburite meeting at Hesper. Does anyone have any information about the Wilburite Friends at Hesper? Farewell, Edsel Burdge Jr.
