    1. [Q-R] Welcome Society
    2. Judith Heald
    3. We might also want to pursue the Welcome Society - which includes not only the Welcome, but all the other ships that carried our early ancestors. I know NOTHING about this except for the data at the website http://www.welcomesociety.org/ but it has been around for 100+ years. However from a brief look at the web site, it does not seem to be very active right now either, as "current" photos are 6 years old. 3. Hello - Please can the person knowledgeable abt. the Society assist me with my questions ? I asked if the Society actually physically conducts or assists Members with Genealogical Research .... also does the Society maintain a Web-site,...... similar to the DAR ? The DAR is a similar Society but they have extensive research help and Library as well as a Web-site with information, plus local Chapters with monthly meetings......I live in Fla. so cannot attend meetings in Wash. State, but do at my local DAR Chapter..... I would like to point out that DAR Membership is cheaper, as well......and that someone Researching their Quaker ancestors has many facilities open and available to them because the Quakers kept such good records.... so I repeat the question of another correspondent, " What do you get for your $235.00 ? " Thanks, sally

    2. Ruby Simonson McNeill
    3. Before you read my final response to the Dec. of Early Quakers, may I suggest that we all take a few minutes and send the quaker-roots list our own list of Quaker ancestors. I'm just a member of the Descendants of Early Quakers and, as I mentioned, their objectives are: a. To promote historical research. b. To promote scholarly efforts toward the preservation of family documents and record of the SOCIETY OF FRIENDS c. To promote appreciation and recognition of the accurate and extensive family records kept by the SOCIETY OF FRIENDS" How the propose to or attain these objectives, I do not know. However, you can contact them for further information. I'm afraid that I am not doing anything active with this organization. I have belonged to so many during the years that it now time to let the younger generation step up to the plate. I still very active with our local Spokane Genealogical Society and that keeps me as busy as I want to be at this point. I think we all have organizations that we maintain active on and others that we just financially support through our membership dues. Hope this answers all the questions. There may be more questions but I have no more answers. Of course you certainly don't need to feed it necessary to join any organization to continue to research your own families - that, for me, will only end when I do. Ruby in Spokane

    3. I'm sorry. I didn't intend to reply directly. I don't save address's for everyone I reply to so no worries about being in my address book unintentionally. Some lists reply to list and others don't. I didn't look so I didn't realize this one was set to not reply to list. To promote appreciation and recognition of the accurate and extensive family records kept by the SOCIETY OF FRIENDS" > Worthy goals. No doubt about it. Does the society give money towards these efforts? Do they make materials available to libraries and such for researchers? I guess my real question is more along the lines of: For even a small group of lets say 50 a $235.00 membership brings in a fair chunk of change, $1,175.00. That's a lot of money for someone to belong to a group that gets together once a year in Washington for tea and crumpets [ which I'm sure the members pay for out of pocket ]. If the money went into a trust that would fund the above it probably would be well worth it. There never seems to be enough monies available to preserve things properly. With the above in mind I ask again, "What do you get for your $235.00?" There's an old maxim that holds true even in genealogy, "Follow the money." For some $235.00 is not a lot of money. For others that is quite a bit, especially if your on a fixed income. > "Qualification for Membership: > Men, Women and Children who can establish proof of descent,on or before 1835, either lineal or collateral, from an early member of the Society of Friends throughout the World, shall be eligible for membership." > > I, personally, am so proud of my Quaker ancestry and they are many and early - my father being raised, to a degree, by his Quaker grandmother in Washington state, although she was born in Ohio. 3. Re: Descendants of Early Quakers, etc.   I can also claim descent from two different Jackson families who were in Chester and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania as early as 1685 (from Macclesfield, Cheshire County,England) and as late as 1725 (from Ballitore, County Kildare in Ireland). However, the last known Quaker in my line was probably born in Pennfield Colony in Nova Scotia in 1788. 3. I am a member of The Descendants of Early Quakers, and I wonder if this is the organization some of you were wondering about? They meet only once a year, at a "tea" with a speaker, held in Washington D.C. in April (it used to be April, but might have been changed to July as some of the lineage organizations have done the past few years). If Google does not supply a lead using "Descendants of Early Quakers" I can try to find a name and address to make an enquiry to. I do think it is nice to honor the memory of our early ancestors who were members of the Society of Friends, and the sacrifices so many made in order to be true to their beliefs in a closer connectiion between the individual and his/her God (closer than was the idea of other religions of the time, and especially the Church of England). 1. [Q-R] Arthur Atkinson
    2. Jerry M.
    3. Thomas Atkinson, born 1741, died in Ohio about 1816. Has a son Thomas died in Orange County, Indiana. Has a grandson Arthur, but we don't seem to be able to find a birth date for him. I found an Arthur Atkinson in Orange County, Indiana, born 1827, about the right time line, but no parents known. He married Mary Jane Pinnick, born KY. The family seems to have remained in the Orange County area, whereas others moved to Rockville, IN. Can any one help me. I've exhausted all the places I can think of to look including Family Search, the Atkinson website, where I was slandered by one woman sending me about ten emails saying I needed to prove I was related--that's is what I am trying to prove.
