    3. My Quaker ancestors are descendants of Richard Swain, of Binfield, Berkshire, England, who along with his son and 8 other men bought Nantucket. I have 218 pages of Swains who intermarried with all the people on this island and also moved other places such as Easton, NY, and North Carolina. I am still slowly writing in all of the names of the people in this book, Swain of Nantucket, Tales and Trails, by Robert Henry Swain. They all intermarried with each other as their group was small at first and grew slowly. So cousins married cousins. Impossible to sit here and write out all of the names, but a few are Ellis, Giles, Meader, Coffin, Bocott, Allen, Woodbury, Clark, Wyer, Cathcart, Sibley, Gardner, Weare, Paddock, Ellis, Mason, Folger, Norton, - those are some names I have copied so far, but I don't know if all were Quakers, as the book does not indicate that. I have only done about 60 pages of 218. Some of Richard's descendants did not go to Nantucket, and I don't think Richard was a Quaker but was reprimanded for harboring them in the Mass. Bay Colony. His son John became one. The first generation of people on the island were not exposed overly much to Quakerism, but after that the majority of people became Quakers and suffered much during the wars since their only means of livelihood was whaling.. So it will take more research for me to know who was and who wasn't. Sue

One is from Lamplugh in Cumberland, an area that I study. Other of your surnames that had Quaker branches in the area are: Dixon, Marshall, Pearson, Peile, Taylor and Wilson. There is a particular Lamplugh Quaker Dickinson/Taylor connection with Talbot County Maryland. There is also the partnership between the early ministers James Dickinson and Thomas Wilson (who travelled around America c1700). 3. Both my mother and father's families are from Chester County, PA Quaker lines My mother's family, the STERN line from Downingtown in Chester County, PA shares most of the surnames Judy lists from her husband's HEALD line, as well as CURRIER and related lines from Cecil Co. Maryland. My father's Chester County lines are SPEAKMAN, MERCER, PYLE, and related lines. I have the book on the Irish Quakers who came to PA which documents our STARR and related lines, but I wonder if anyone can fill in the historical context of the English Quakers who moved to Ireland and then to PA within a few generations. I've heard stories that they were in Cromwell's army and given land taken from the Irish, then became convinced Quakers in Ireland. I've also heard they moved from England to Ireland due to persecution. If anyone can recommend a a book or offer their insight, I would appreciate it. 3. Who I BELIEVE are in my Quaker roots are   1)  ISAAC JACKSON, who came over from Ballitore, County Kildare, Ireland in 1725 on the ship "Sizargh" to New Castle DE. He was a son of Anthony Jackson, an early Quaker convert in Lancashire, and a follower of Edmondson to Ireland. His wife was Ann EVANS, who was also doubtless of Quaker descent, the daughter of Rowland Evans of Balliloing in County Wicklow. Their son John married a Sarah MILLER, and theri son John married an unrelated Susanna Jackson in 1743. All were Quaker marriages.   2) EPHRAIM JACKSON, who came over as an indentured servant to the Hasll family to Bucks County in 1684-5. He later married Rachel NEWLIN, a descendant of Nathaniel and Nicholas Newlin of the famous Newlin Grist Mill in PA. Ephraim's son Joseph also married a girl from the MILLER family and their daughter Susanna Jackson (see above) married John Jackson (also see above), uniting thses two disparate Jackson lines in Chester and Delaware Counties.   Bob Wilson  --- On Sat, 4/4/09, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: QUAKER-ROOTS Digest, Vol 4, Issue 67 To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, April 4, 2009, 4:54 PM Today's Topics:    1. 3. I suspect there is a connection between the Lewellings, Llewellyns, Llewelyns & many other variations.  But I have not pursued the connection.  One of my great grandmothers was Mary Llewellyn.  Our ancestor, Morris Llewelyn, who settled in Pennsylvania's' Welsh Tract in 1682, spelled it with only 3 l's.  Mary was born in Haverford, PA, part of the Welsh Tract and site of Morris's land and in IN married Daniel W. Too, there are several who a supposed to be inter-related to the McMains family. We would appreciate any information you might run across on the Calvert and McMains families. Small snippets of information that did not seem important to others over the years have allowed us to make final connections and trace the movements of members of these families. So, any small piece of information you might come across on the Quaker Calvert family or the Quaker McMains family would be deeply appreciated. James R. Calvert [email protected]

Not all ships are listed. I recall reading that passenger lists were not always kept  and those that were did not always survive.   According to family tradition my ancestor, Morris Llewelyn, arrived in PA in 1682 on a ship just preceding William Penn's landing and owned land in the Welsh tract. He is listed in Futhey & Cope's book on early Chester County and in one on early Welsh settlers.  But I have been unable to document the ship he arrived on.  He is not listed as a member of the Welcome Society.   Eleanor --- On Sat, 4/4/09, Judith Heald <[email protected]> wrote: From: Judith Heald <[email protected]> Subject: [Q-R] Welcome Society To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, April 4, 2009, 11:30 AM We might also want to pursue the Welcome Society - which includes not only the Welcome, but all the other ships that carried our early ancestors.  I know NOTHING about this except for the data at the website http://www.welcomesociety.org/ but it has been around for 100+ years.
