    3. I also have Maris, Parke, Holladay, Moon, Grubb, Beeson, and Miller... Is this your James Lindley d. 10-13-1726? After his death, his widow, Eleanor (Parke) Lindley married Henry Jones, b. abt. 1696, son of Francis and Rachel (Newton) Jones. The surname Lindley resurfaces several generations later with Isaac Lindley Taylor, son of Lewis and Martha Ann (Stubbs) Taylor. 2. I don't recall that Lord Baltimore ever came over. In fact history states that he never saw this country, as he died leaving it to his son Cecil who became the next Lord Baltimore, but he sent his brother Lenard over to be the Governor. 3. Well, I wonder if everyone is related to them as I have seen a lot of emails about Quaker families coming from Europe and settling in other states. From the ten original purchasers, I havn't seen a lot of similar names in the emails, but a few, like one I forget to mention- West- is in my line. But as I said, my Swain book doesn't tell who are and who aren't Quakers- all I know is that the island became predominantly Quaker during the second generation. Mary Coffin Starbuck was the first one, and she is the daughter of Tristram and Dionis Coffin. Tristram is the main man who sought purchase of the island and was the leader of the island. He came from landed gentry in England, but got mixed up with Cromwell and got away from persecution. He was an Anabaptist and was persecuted in Mass. Bay Colony, as were Quakers, so he gathered people who wanted a place where they could live peacefully- they started the whole island and they got along with the Indians well; but eventually the one culture overtook the other. The author of Mary's book made her very real, as she became so to him, and the other people were very real, also- lots of conversation in the book. Sue

    2. Judith Heald
    3. Kim, Another book that helps is our own Tom Hamm's "The Quaker's in America" . Most of the converts to Quakerism in Ireland came from English and Scots Protestants (Presbyterians, Baptists and Independents), and a few from the Church of England. Cromwellian soldiers were sometimes given the land they had conquered - thus taking it away from Irish landholders. It is likely that a few of Cromwell's army became Quakers, but in large part it was those displaced by Cromwell's soldiers who became Quakers. That and other (MANY) acts of persecution, helped set the stage for Quakerism to thrive in Ireland. Irish Friends who came to Pennsylvania often indicated that they had been born in England and had lived a few years in Ireland, primarily around Ulster and Dublin. I'm certain others can describe this better than I, but this may help some! Judy ... I have the book on the Irish Quakers who came to PA which documents our STARR and related lines, but I wonder if anyone can fill in the historical context of the English Quakers who moved to Ireland and then to PA within a few generations. I've heard stories that they were in Cromwell's army and given land taken from the Irish, then became convinced Quakers in Ireland. I've also heard they moved from England to Ireland due to persecution. If anyone can recommend a a book or offer their insight, I would appreciate it. 3. The book I mentioned, "The History of Nantucket, County, Island, and Town, including Genealogies of the First Settlers" by Alexander Starbuck is available on the net, or perhaps in a big university library, if you have one near you as I do. Then I read "Mary Coffin Starbuck and the Early History of Nantucket" by Warren- this is history mixed with everyday life and his perceptions of her personality- it makes the island very real- day to day conversations based upon history. You get a mixture of history and what he could gather about her- she is the first Quaker there, and is "the great woman." Now I am reading a book written by her granddaughter, I think, and it is about a later period buy is her own words about her life there. They had 1000 year chests into which they threw things like nails, door knobs, and all sorts of things that were passed down to the generations and finally dumped during her time- but her life was fascinating. I think it is called Mary Starbuck- it is downstairs and I just arose. The second book gave me a great feeling for Tristram and his family and the first people who lived there. If you are interested in the Swains, that book I had to copy at the Salt Lake Family History Library- Swains of Nantucket- Tales and Trails- more of a surname book with historical information in it too. Lots of people and the intermarriages. That book is very hard to find on the net and when you do it costs a whopping sum. Everyone wants to get it. I am just fortunate to have photocopied it for 6 dollars. I think there is a book about the religion behind the whaling industry in Nantucket, but didn't see it the last time I went over to BYU and I am reading other books about Nantucket- it is such a fascinating place- a country unto itself. 3. Susan, All good Chester County Quaker names. Is Amy Coates the daughter of Isaac and Hannah Stalker Coates? Lots of Prestons and Jacksons in the PennsGrove and Homeville Quaker Meetings, but not these! I would try Biles instead of Bills for Rebecca - I suggest checking Alice Beard's "Nottingham Quakers" for her? I would also look in South Eastern Lancaster County in addition to Chester. I branch off with Mahlon Preston's sister, Deborah PRESTON, who married Seymour COATES in 1805. I am curious what the original source is for the spelling of Jane DEYN's surname. Many years ago I looked at the Brighouse Monthly Meeting Minutes which are at the University of Leeds library and her name was spelt as DAY on a number of occasions. Here is what I transcribed from those records: _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 29th 4th mo 1698 Brighouse MM - Wm Preston publishing his intentions of marriage with Jane Day John ?owyor? & Rich'd Hanson to enquire into his clearness. 29th 5th mo 1698 Brighouse MM - At the Monthly Meeting at Mankinholes (Friends Meeting House) Wm Preston the 2nd time published his intentions of marriage to Jane Day and both being found clear they are left to accomplish the same when they soe meet. Rob't Walker & John Cooper to attend the same. 4th or 14th 6mo 1698 Brighouse MM - William Preston and Jane Day married. 26th 6th mo 1698 Brighouse MM - R't Walker & Jno Cooper give acc'nt of the ?????? accomplishment of Wm Prestons marriage. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ - Ed
