A. Monocacy Meeting in present-day Frederick County, MD was never a separate monthly meeting; it was at most a preparative meeting. I understand the PM was subordinate to four monthly meetings: (1) Nottingham until 1734, then (2) Hopewell 1734-1744, then (3) Fairfax after 1744, then any remaining members were attached to (4) Pipe Creek (the closest) when the preparative meeting was laid down in 1762 or 1776. https://www.quakermeetings.com/Plone/search_display?generalSearchWord=Monoca cy [Many e-mail servers insert a line break or return in long URLs like this one, and one must manually edit the link to remove the break before clicking through to the desired site.] B. I do not believe Monocacy was ever in Montgomery County. Frederick County was older, and Montgomery County was carved out of Frederick in 1776. Tom Hill Thomas C. I'm in need of a little help with Euclidus Longshore, son of Robert Longshore and Ursula Jolly. He was born ca 1740 in Bucks County PA and died ca 1818 in Newberry District SC. Does anyone have the Quaker records showing his birth? He married a woman named Sarah who may have predeceased him. He supposedly had a son name Euclidus who married Grace McConnel . He was born ca 23 oct 1792 and died 8 mar 1861 in Randolph Co, AL. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated. Merry Anne Pierson merryanne@bellsouth.net

I have quaker ancestors from wayne county, they were buried in a family owned plot located in a tobacco field when I saw it. There is a good chance your family may be in a family plot as well. After viewing several other entries, I do not think the reference to James West in 1703 is likely to be my family: there was a Physician of that name who is flagged as "Sr." in several other entries close to that time. I believe the entry below relates to that man's son. My question regarding his age still holds, though. Thanks. Hello Listers; My 8g grandfather James West died in 1701. His wife Prudence died in 1702. Her will (1702 July 1) mentions two minor sons, James and Jonathan. Their mother appointed "William Southebe, John Kinsey, Pentacost Teague, and Joseph Stine" her Executors in her will. I have also found this in the book West New Jersey Deed Records, 1676-1721: p174, West New Jersey Deed Records, 1676 to 1721: 20 Mar 1703, Signed James West power of attorney to William Biles, Edward Shippen, Jr., Joseph Wasse, Joshua Barkstead, of Burlington, West NJ. Wit: Walter Groombridge, David Robertson, Edward Beeson James Dunridge I have found this reference also regarding James West: Early Quaker Records of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Volume 1, 1682-1750: p. 194: 26-9-1708: Pentecoast Teague reports that an orphan child of James West's wants a place to be put out apprentice. p. 195: 28-11-1708: Pentecoast Teague reports that he has provided a place for James West with Jacob Usher, carpenter, but the meeting thinks there is no need to give money with him, considering his age and the time he is to be with him. 25-12-1708: Pentecoast Teague is desired to continue to care to provide a place to put James West. Is there a way to calculate the approximate birth date of the child James West, knowing he was old enough to not need a stipend sent with him in 1708? Suggestions for my further research? Thanks, Carol T.

Correction: the Census cited was 1900, not 1903. Sorry. -- S. Newton
Before anyone spends a lot of time looking for Sarah Cook, I think the name was probably Amy D Sharpless Cook (1840-1903), born in Ohio, died in Maine. Amy was a recognized minister, as was her husband, Edward Cobb Cook (1840-1916). Stanwood Meeting was in Leavenworth County, KS, just west of Kansas City. Edward and Amy in the 1903 Census lived near Tonganoxie in Leavenworth County, and Valley Falls is a little farther to the west in adjacent Jefferson County. They married in Iowa and 8 of their 10 children were born in Iowa, including Charles and Warren. Edward came from Maine, so Amy could have been making a family visit in 1903 in addition to being recognized as a visiting minister at New England Yearly Meeting . Amy's death in Maine was reported in the Maine death records and in the online American Friend Obituary Index. -- S. Newton In response to this Q-R post of March 4: >From the Valley Falls [KS] Farmers Vindicator for July 3, 1903: "COOK. Quaker-Roots Listers, This came through on my old e-mail address and appears relevant to WALKER descendants as well as its questions about burials outside the burial-ground wall. It is across Old Eagle School Road just opposite the Burial ground and the property once owned by Lewis Walker. The former Walker Property, now commonly and locally referred to as "the Richter Tract" for the current owner, is under contract to be sold to a local developer who intends to build townhouses and carriage houses on the property adjacent and just on the west side of the cemetery wall. He has stated interest in building an office building, an apartment building, townhouses, carriage houses, and a WaWa combination convenience store and gas station. He has been in discussion with Township officials for a year, although the matter has only just been made public. Neither the Township nor the developer had notified the Valley Friends Meeting of the proposal, amorphous though the developer and Township officials claim it to be. The residents of Tredyffrin Township are angry and have protested about this development. The Township is in the process of writing a storm water management ordinance that will accommodate the developer's stated plan. We noticed that at least one of the contributors to the above quoted Ancestry.Com thread is a descendant of Lewis Walker. We are hoping that some or all of you will be able to attend a meeting to be held at the Tredyffrin Township Building, Duportail Road, Chesterbrook. The Post Office address for the Township Building is Berwyn, PA, though the actual location is in the Chesterbrook development on Chesterbrook Boulevard. Duportail Road is at the south end of Chesterbrook Boulevard just north of Route 202. The meeting is Monday, March 5, 2012, 7:00 pm. This is the third meeting on this matter and there will be more. The March 5th meeting is directly with the developer and Township officials are, according to what has been said, not coming to this meeting. We understand that there is a spring on the Lewis Walker property and wondered if you knew where it is located. We understand that, after meeting originally in Lewis Walker's home, a log building was constructed on his property which was used as a hospital during Washington's Valley Forge Encampment. We wondered, also, if the location of that building is known. We wondered, as well, if there are any burials outside the western wall of the cemetery. The current Valley Friends Meeting building, on the east side of Old Eagle School Road, was built in 1871. We hope you will join with us in our efforts to save the Lewis Walker property, aka the Richter tract. Thank you for reading and forwarding this letter to others interested parties who might help with this rescue. Yours, Richard and Jacqueline Kunin

A similar certificate was also received on that date for Olive Smith. Emporia meeting was set off from Cottonwood in 1888. with Oliver S, Olive, and Margaret as charter members. I'm curious if anyone has access to indices /abstracts for the Cottonwood MM in Emporia Kansas. I am following up on my maternal gr gr grandfather's family. Oliver Smith was granted a certificate to transfer 12 Jan 1887 from Green Plain MM OH to Cottonwood MM [Emporia, Lyon Co., KS] , with wife Margaret, children Ruth Esther & Walter Clifford. Oliver's daughter Lida was living in Sedgwick KS married to my great grandfather William R. Peacock Jr. I am very grateful to list members who helped me trace William from Indiana, from Earlham Normal School, etc. to the marriage with Lida and who found his gravemarker in Whittier. Now I am trying to follow up with the rest of Oliver's family. Interestingly, Cottonwood MM was founded by [amongst others] two Moon brothers from Indiana, John and Joseph. Joseph is the father of my great grandfather Newton William Moon. Back to my current investigation: Oliver Smith's daughter Ruth Esther Smith was prominent in the Quaker missionary movement [apologies if that is not the appropriate wording] and I have good information on her. I do not have any information on son "Walter Clifford" who I had record of as "Clifford" - is he listed in the minutes of the Cottonwood MM? Do those minutes contain any mention of Oliver or wife Margaret? Thanks much
Kimberly, I couldn't find anything definite about the deaths in a quick search either. Thomas and Mary were disowned 12 July 1849 for allowing "out of unity" meetings in their home, so obviously he didn't die in 1848. I found Thomas and Mary in the same censuses you did. In 1880, Mary Townsend was a widow living with her daughter Roseanna, then married to Alexander Schun, in Douglas, Page Co., Iowa. So it appears you are right: Thomas died after 1870, probably in Lee Co., Iowa, then Mary moved to Page Co. to live with her daughter's family. That was quite a trek for an older woman, almost completely across the southern border of the state, but then at least she would be with family. I wouldn't worry about the age shown in the 1850 census. It is clearly just an error on the census taker's part. As you mentioned, her age is shown consistently in the other census returns. In 1880, she was listed as 69, again consistent with a birth around 1810. I looked for both of them in FindAGrave to no avail. The Lee Co. and Page Co. USGenWeb pages were no help either. You might try deeds and estate records in Lee County, though Thomas was not shown as owning real estate in the 1870 census. Good luck. There is no death for Thomas Townsend recorded in the original West Grove records or in the Heiss abstracts. The West Grove records clearly put Mary's birth in 1810. Having a last child at 45 or 46 would not have been unusual at the time. Since Thomas and Mary were disowned soon after moving to Westfield, their deaths would not appear in Quaker records unless they rejoined. I notice in the old email, that Heiss states that Thomas died 29 Feb. 1848 but I don't think that is correct, because 1) Thomas shows up with Mary and family in the 1850, 1860 (Indiana) and 1870 (Iowa) census, and 2) Rosanna (daughter of Thomas and Mary) Townsend was born in 1855 or 1856. Dear List, I exchanged emails a few years ago (see email copy/paste below) with a person named "Robert", who no longer has a valid email address, re: James and Roseanna Townsend, and Thomas and Mary Hastings Townsend. I am revisiting them, because of a roadblock in trying to apply for the DAR membership. The problem: I can't find a place or date of death for Thomas and Mary. A couple of strange things that add to the mystery: in the 1850 census, Mary's age is 29, indicating that she was born in 1819 or 1820, and in the subsequent census, she is born in 1810 or 1811. If she were born in 1819, she would only have been 12 or so when she had Nancy, her first child. If she was born in 1810 or 11, she would have been 45 or 46 when she had her last child, Roseanna. Either possibility is pretty far-fetched, but possible. My conclusion is that there is information missing and that Thomas probably died around 1870 - and that Mary probably died after 1880. Any suggestions?
