That's pretty much what I am asking for: a range of ages. Old enough to be usefully apprenticed so that no money need be given with him when he is put out. It appears he was apprenticed as a carpenter. If I knew how old he was at the time he apprenticed I'd know approximately when he was born. I have not found his birth in the Quaker records, and in fact, I do not think his father was Quaker, though his mother was most likely a birthright Quaker. It appears that James West Sr. was in Philadelphia before the arrival of Penn, and had six children, some most likely born before his arrival in America. The son James who was "put out" was likely the youngest. Birth dates for two older siblings were 1690 (Charles) and 1681 (a prior James whose death date is not known). The other three children I have no birth dates for. The son Jonathan she mentioned in her will died in 1704. They likely came from Bristol, England and she mentions a Roger Harrow (Barrow?) as a "kinsman" in her will. I have no birth dates for Prudence or her husband, and therefore estimate her birth to be about 1658. Here are the bits and pieces of the on going-work of compiling research and photos of Padgett's Creek Quaker Burial Ground, Sedalia, Union County, South Carolina. 1. Here is a link to the work-in-progress of matching old and new photos to the 7 Mar 2012 Survey Map. For the Surveyor's map, with preliminary links to published inscriptions: http://askgrannyus.posterous.com/draft-map-of-padgetts-creek-with-my-identifie 4. For a preliminary listing of names: http://askgrannyus.posterous.com/padgetts-creek-names I would very much welcome a brief paragraph, with reference citations if possible, for any of the families listed (send to jrussell2@charter.net). The details of were they came from, when, and where they went to and when would be very good to include with attribution to the sender.
Hello Listers; My 8g grandfather James West died in 1701. His wife Prudence died in 1702. Her will (1702 July 1) mentions two minor sons, James and Jonathan. Their mother appointed "William Southebe, John Kinsey, Pentacost Teague, and Joseph Stine" her Executors in her will. I have found this reference also regarding James West: Early Quaker Records of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Volume 1, 1682-1750: p. 194: 26-9-1708: Pentecoast Teague reports that an orphan child of James West's wants a place to be put out apprentice. p. 195: 28-11-1708: Pentecoast Teague reports that he has provided a place for James West with Jacob Usher, carpenter, but the meeting thinks there is no need to give money with him, considering his age and the time he is to be with him. 25-12-1708: Pentecoast Teague is desired to continue to care to provide a place to put James West. Is there a way to calculate the approximate birth date of the child James West, knowing he was old enough to not need a stipend sent with him in 1708? Suggestions for my further research? Thanks, Carol T.

My g-gpa, David Willson (2-L's) is purportedly recorded in the Warren Co., NJ Meeting born on March 6, 1861 in NJ and dying in Neosho Co., KS on March 2, 1895. Both dates are more precise than my descendant records (non-Quaker), and I'm surprised that Quaker ancestry was never discussed in family get-togethers. Is this common for extended Quaker family to record at 'home base' rather than at the local Meeting? In fact, I don't know if there was a local Meeting in, or near, Erie, Neosho Co., KS. Can anyone in the forum provide proof of these dates and places? Hinshaw's books are not available in the local library, and his index is checked out. Any other reference material available to verify this David Willson is a son of Abijah and Margaret Willson of Quakertown, NJ? Thanks in advance, Mike Wilson, mwtroth@comcast.net

Below is the listing of Padgett's Creek Families that I have so far. I also included the references I 've found in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker families. Additions and corrections are welcome! If you would like to submit a short paragraph *with references,* about any of these families (members, where from, where to, etc.), I would be very glad to include your paragraph with attribution in the 2012 Padgett's Creek Report and your references in the bibliography of sources. I would not trust myself to know which online info is correct, so please contribute if you'd like to have a bit about your family/families or research interests included. Judy, Wikipedia tells me that "Morven Township" was in Marion County until 1848 and then became part of Morrow County. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morven I looked up Alum Creek MM in Volume IV of Hinshaw and found on page 1192 the White entries you quote plus seven more WHITE entries. I read the 1833 entry as saying Henry While died on October 10 and was buried at "Morvin, Ohio", which I understand from Wikipedia was Morven Township, in 1824-1842 part of Marion County and now somewhere in western Morrow County. That may well have been the Weston or later Whetstone Preparative Meeting that stayed with and became the site of business meetings of the Hicksite branch of Alum Creek MM after 1828. Whetstone Meeting was located just north of present-day U.S. 42 in Gilead Township, and its properties are discussed on page 38 of my list of all properties in Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting, formerly named Indiana YM (Hicksite): http://www2.wilmington.edu/academics/documents/OVYMDeedlist25January2010.pdf [Many e-mail servers insert a line break or return in long URLs like this one, and one must manually edit the link to remove the break before clicking through to the desired site.] Or maybe not; I have visited the Whetstone/Alum Creek-Hicksite burial ground and meetinghouse sites, but I have not researched the genealogy in Morrow County. I found some MULLENIX entries on page 1176 suggesting they all transferred in from Plains MM in New York. The entry on Gideon Mullenix's marriage to Hannah White says they were married at Northern PM [later part of Gilead Twp., Morrow Cty.], and Hannah was the daughter of Joshua and Mercy White of Marion County. I never worked out whether Northern PM became Weston or somehow disappeared. Tom Thomas C. I came across information on ancestry.com regarding the Alum Creek Monthly Meetings in which it shows an entry of what I believe my 3rd generation grandmother, i.e., Hannah White marrying my 3rd generation grandfather, i.e., Gideon Mullennix. I am not familiar with Quaker meetings, but I believe it is noting the date January 24, 1834. There is a title of: WHITE 1833, 10, 10. Henry d bur Morvin, O. 1834, 1, 24. Hannah m Gideon MULLENIX I have so many questions, I don't know where to begin, but can you tell me, what the 1833 entry is saying? Also, what is the Alum Creek Monthly Meeting? Where were they held? Basically, how do I go to find out more about this information? I would appreciate any assistance you can provide. I received this email from research on the Internet. Judy Anderson Scotch Plains, NJ Thank you!
I'm trying to track down additional information on Thomas Cox who was married to Bethenia/Bethany Aldridge. Thomas died c. January 1814. I'm trying to determine if this Thomas had a son named Thomas who married Mahala. I know this is a longshot, but I'm hoping someone may have info they would be willing to share? Thanks, Chris Taylor
While I cannot speak directly to this query, I suggest treating Bedell's work with skepticism. I've found numerous errors in this book. Webster Parry (1848-1936), a Quaker genealogist of Richmond, Indiana, compiled histories of many Quaker families , Pidgeon among them. He says that Elizabeth was the daughter of David and Sarah (Gooch) Crew. Parry seldom indicated his sources, but I have found him generally reliable. Much of his research was based on monthly meeting records, but he apparently also had access to records in private hands that are now lost. The marriage certificate for Charles and Elizabeth at Deep River in 1789 gives Charles's parents as Isaac and Sarah, and Elizabeth's as David and Sarah. You will find a draft mapping of the identifiable tombstones at Padgett's Creek Quaker Cemetery, Union County SC, at this link: http://askgrannyus.posterous.com/draft-map-of-padgetts-creek-with-my-identifie This is the recently completed surveyor's map with my *preliminary* notes on it. The transcription of the tombstones is still a work-in-progress, so we welcome input about the people and families of the Padgett's Creek area. We are putting together a report with timeline for the land tenure, bibliography, photos, tombstone transcriptions, and other details. I would *very greatly* appreciate any bibliographic citations (especially with the scanned items!!) or other photos you have. Please reply to me off-list if you have questions, suggestions, input, or some items that you would like to send about Padgett's Creek and families: jrussell2@charter.net Possibly we could also compile a list of families. I've seen bits and pieces, but never, I don't think, an attempt at a complete listing. I'd welcome your input there, too. The list of families that I have so far is: Addington, Clark/Clerk, Cook, Fincher, Gist, Hibbs, Hunt, Neaderman, Pearson, Smith Thank you!
