    3. Hi Cornelia I had a quick look and can see many of the people you talk about on the CD of the Suffolk Quaker Digest Index produced by our QFHS. Essex is the next Quarterley Meeting to be produced hopefully before the summer. I can send details of the CD if you are interested. An explaination about the digests is on our website www.qfhs.co.uk This seems to be playing up tonight. It should resolve to http://www.rootsweb.com/~engqfhs/ which is still working. then go to Research Then go to Digests of Births, Marriages and Burials. 3. don't everyone jump on her at once <grin> but Liz Butler is the one I'm in contact with to get the Quaker cd's-she's a liazon, though, not the person who's actually doing this. note: Margaret Page emailed me and mentioned the Essex cd won't be ready until this summer...being the third production completion date change that I'm aware of, I'm not swearing to this date. we will just have to be patient.... I hope I'm not out of line for posting her eddress as she is the link at this time to the Quaker cd's for all of England... lizh_butler@hotmail.com the completed cd's are for Suffolk, Norfolk and Norwich, they're completeing the Essex cd and are working on the London and Middlesex cd's...that will take some time. I've seen the London, Middlesex and Surrey meeting records, and they are extensive. lots of work to finish them! Cornelia Medford, Oregon, USA

    3. I am interested in viewing and/or purchasing the Essex CD you mention. How can I obtain it (I live in the united States)I am interested in Rachel Winston MESSER AND Walter MARRIAGE. (You can imagine the problems encountered when I search for that name. They were married in the Chelmsford, Essex meetinghouse on 8 March, 1848. I believe six children were born there. Any information on this family that you have would be apprecited. 3. thank you, Margaret, yes, I'm waiting with baited breath for the cd's. they were to be a Christmas present but weren't ready at the allotted time, so were to be a birthday present and aren't ready still...and now you say that Essex is slated for summer....I'd have a choice word or two with them, as they said the only delay was packaging....I've never been all that interested in packaging. if it didn't cause mass confusion I'd have everything packaged in white with black print! LOL! oh, well...I do hope they are scans of the original pages, and not just the indexes but the original records. I need to re-examine some things, and follow up on new leads.... I'm familiar with the digests...used them "b.i." (before internet-at least, before much of anything was online, just a bbs is all, nothing even close to what we have now) spent a small fortune (literally) on ordering the films from the Mormon library and printing out about a foot deep of copies from the films-both indexes and original records, not just of Essex and Suffolk, but of London, Middlesex, Surrey and Devon, as well as 98% of England that I ordered films for but made no copies of. drove myself a bit crazy trying to discover the Harwich records...only to eventually find that they either weren't kept or were lost-there goes the marriage of my John Freeman and Susannah Rayner (and possibly her birth, as well).....the marriage is recorded (intentions only) in the Colchester meeting index, (but I believe the m. itself took place in Harwich as it isn't in Woodbridge or Walton) but I can't find the actual intentions-it isn't where the index says it is. considering the time frame (1600's) I've done fairly well with my Woodbridge and Walton ancestors and relatives...still some blank spaces and holes, a few missing branches, but all in all, not too bad...for the mid 1700's it gets nearly complete, but then we lose people to other faiths and the tree starts getting a bit spotty again as the family comes into the 1800's. guess that's how most trees are...not necissarily at the same periods as mine, though...would love to see rhe pr's start showing up in FreeReg.... can you tell me, though, was there an Acton Meeting, and if so, are the records extant....or if there was no Acton Meeting, which meeting would the residents of Acton go to? that's Acton, Suffolk...didn't realize that there were so many! would it be Sudbury? wasn't there a large meeting there? or Lavenham...oh, the things I didn't pay much attention to early on! at the time they didn't seem to have any connection! I hope I don't make too much of a pest of myself with all these questions and files...I feel a bit less than an intermediate researcher when all I can do is "armchair research", never getting to roll up my sleeves and delve into the archives...but I've been at it for 20 years, and so I've got alot of info...and just as many questions! regards, Cornelia -- Norton Antivirus protected ----- Original Message ----- From: "J Margaret Page" <pagekidder@hotmail.com> To: <QUAKER-BRITISH-ISLES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2006 2:07 PM Subject: Re: [Q-B-I] who are these Quaker relations from marriage records among my people? > Hi Cornelia > I had a quick look and can see many of the people you talk about on the CD > of the Suffolk Quaker Digest Index produced by our QFHS. > Essex is the next Quarterley Meeting to be produced hopefully before the > summer. > I can send details of the CD if you are interested. > An explaination about the digests is on our website www.qfhs.co.uk This > seems to be playing up tonight. > It should resolve to http://www.rootsweb.com/~engqfhs/ which is still > working. > then go to Research > Then go to Digests of Births, Marriages and Burials. > Margaret snip

    1. additional data, such as I have Re: marriage records

    3. Sarah is correct, I got distracted and sent this without the intended and necissary data. before I continue, I should mention that I do have the book Colchester Quakers by Stanley Fitch, and am planning on purchasing the Quaker CD's for Essex and Suffolk, although I will need someone who will take U.S. dollars from me and turn them into British Sterling for the Quaker FHS....I think that's who has and sells the cd's...anyway, it's excessively costly to get a check in BPS in America. I am happy to do look-ups for others in Colchester Quakers by Stanley Fitch. I did change the dates of these people according to old calender... Mary Wilkenson. I am in need of Peter's father and possibly his grandfather to tie him and his descendants into the tree. I have him proved through wills to definately be a member of this Cross family tree, I just am not sure exactly how he ties in-perhaps Edmond Cross(e) and Sarah's son John is his grandfather, or Peter Cross(e) and Joannah's son Joseph is his father. they are the most likely candidates I have. 1. PARSONS (Somerset + W. Country) plus METFORD, NICKLESON, ELLIS
    2. Michel Metford-Platt
    3. Hello! I am having a particularly difficult time in attaching the PARSONS lines to the METFORD group. There seem to be 4 PARSONS who are associated with the METFORD clan (for lack of a better term). Has anyone seen PARSONS or is researching them? Some went to Sidcot school (which unfortunately means very little to me). I have a nice list of Quaker names from the West Country and would like to share what I have. I GROWDEN of Trevose from 17th c Cornwall (I have a Quaker burial in 1681, went to PA (where they also named their area there Trevose), returned to Poole, Dorset, in the marriage of Thomas NICKLESON (1719-1788). A long line of METFORD in Taunton and Glastonbury (lots of them!) 1. Families that married into it from the Taunton line were: HULETT of Street, Somerset; MABSON; ELLIS from Uffculme, Devon; and ANDERDON (with PROCKTOR) from Ruishton, Somerset. The family spread out with WRIGHT and CHARTER, plus BADCOCK (which is closer to me). My immediate line hails from Taunton. "Flook House" in the centre of town was in the family for about 5 generations. 2. In the METFORD of Glastonbury line there was CLOTHIER, PIKE, RAWES and it eventually pretty much "daughtered-out" with THOMSPON and CLARKE, although there are a few Metfords still around here and there. Anything familiar? Michel in SA

    1. Nicholas Newlin
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. My manytimes great grandfather, Nicholas Newlin, lived for many years prior to his emigration, within the bounds of the Mountmellick Meeting, in Queen's County, Ireland, and it is probable that this was where he married Elizabeth Paggott. They emigrated to the Quaker colony, Pennsylvania, in the New World, aboard the "Levee of Liverpool", with James Kilner, ships master, and Cork their probably port of embarkation. The year was 1683. He took with him a certificate signed by the the Mountmellick Meeting dated December 25, 1682, stating that he had "worked honestly", but that Friends were "generally dissatisfied with his moving, he being so well settled with his family, and having sufficient substance for food and rainment; but our Godly jealousy is that his chief grounds for removal is fearfulness of suffering here. " I know nothing more, really, of their life in Ireland or of the Mountmellick meeting, other than reports of their persecution because of their faith, and I would be interested in any actual records that contain info on the family, or anything about the area where they lived. Nicholas was, in all probability, an Englishman who either came to Ireland with parents, or as an adult - to escape the problems Quakers had in England. It is unknown who his parents were or when he actually came to Ireland....there are theories, but no documentation.....his parents, etc are, of course, the 'holy grail' of his descendants. Thanks. The list may be missing some useful replies. Hi Henry Oddie and Sue Christou, glad to have you with us, Can't believe it is 2 years since we were in contact Henry! Have you found anyway of tying up your Burtons with the Burtons in Dent specifically John Burton born 1768 to Richard Burton and Ann Winn where Richard b. 1716 was the brother of my Isabel Burton b.1710 later Binns. Is this John Burton the Surgeon born about 1769 who is buried in Crawshawbooth along with lots of other Burtons? From what I remember this John is mentioned in John Gill's poetry book that you have Sue, and his son Jonathan wrote one of the poems although the others were by your John Gill. Not forgetting John Gill was the boyhood friend of David Binns (1799-1883). Would the Wellcome Library have any record of John Burton the surgeon? Best wishes to you and to our new List. 1. Cross, Harris, Hawkins, Freeman, Rayner
    2. Edwin and Cornelia Moore
    3. my name is Cornelia Fenenga Warner, and I currently reside in Medford, Oregon, USA. I've been researching my ancestry since 1997, and have traced a large Quaker branch of my ancestral tree through out much of England, a little into Ireland, and my branch, which left the faith, removed to America in 1841/42. another branch went into Australia and I suspect there may be Canadians, as well. Edmond Cross(e) b. abt 1620-1624, of Woodbridge, possible son of Edmond Crosse and Ann of Framlingham, is our earliest known ancestor. Edmond Cross(e) m. Sarah, mnu (maiden name unknown) around 1646/47 and they had 9 known children. in 1655 Edmond removed his family from the CofE, which they were never true members of, and joined the Woodbridge Quaker meeting. of Edmond and Sarah's 9 children, 4 are known to have married; 1Peter who m. 1st Johannah mnu, 2nd Elizabeth Peckover 2Edmond who m.1st Sarah Mason, 2nd Frances mnu 3Sarah who m. Jonathan Seaman 4Susannah who m. John Freeman Peter m. Johannah and they had 8 children, only 1 of whom is known to have m.-Edmond Cross, whom I descend from. most of his siblings died young. Peter m. Elizabeth Peckover and they had 9 children, 3 of whom are known to have married and the Quaker Harris's of Surrey, Middlesex and London are of this line. Edmond m. Sarah Mason and they had 6 children, one of whom is known to have married, and they are not yet traced...the Larkes of London and Ireland are their link, still stuck in the early 1700's with this branch. Edmond m. Frances mnu (she wed thrice before him, but the first marriage eludes me) and they had no offspring that I can find. Sarah m. Jonathan Seaman and they had one child-she died of childbirth problems and for some odd reason the Quaker records have her dead 18 days before her son was born. I am still stuck in the early 1700's with this line. Susannah Cross m. John Freeman, aparently outside the faith but not CofE, and they had 5 known children, nothing more is known of this line but I suspect they are related to John Freeman who m. Susannah Rayner, my 6x great grandparents. therein are the first set of early branches in my tree. another email for other branches....this is enough for now... Cornelia

    3. I took a look at what was included on Joseph Glaister/Glaster, etc, in Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia....do you have all that info from the Virginia and North Carolina meetings? I found this , a Pasquotank mm reference..... a "large gifted man in the ministry. b 1673 d. 11-30-1718" ...also, that in Virginia, in an earlier time, he was called 'the speaking cobbler', by non- Quakers, while felt to be an 'eloquent speaker and writer' by local Quakers. 1. GLAISTER of Cumberland
    2. BRIAN ROBERTS
    3. Looking for roots of my daughter's Friends ancestor Joseph Glaister, born c1670, an eloquent writer, preacher, and debater for the Friends. Glaister is a common surname in Cumberland: Wigton parish had many Glaisters. A William Glaister was one of the Friends jailed in Carlisle in 1688 for their beliefs. Friends Robert, John, and Thomas Glaister of Cumberland may have been brothers of Joseph. He was married to Sarah Robinson, 16 Jan. 1689, in Pardshaw Cragg, Cumberland. She was the widow of John Robinson of Pardshaw [same as Pardshaw Cragg?]. The Friends marriage record states that Joseph was of Sedike End, Holme Cultrum, Cumberland. Daughter Ruth was born in Pardshaw, 1699. Then Sarah died, and on 7 June 1701 Joseph wed Mary Stage Sturdye, widow of Thomas Stordy [sic] of Longbrough, Cumberland. They had daughters Rachel, 1702, and Sarah, 1706, both in Eaglesfield, Cumberland. He transferred to Virginia, 1707, from Pardshaw Cragg quarterly meeting although he'd already been in VA as a traveling preacher, 1698. Does anyone have any info on Joseph's parents? Glauster, Glaster, and Gloster are other spellings of the surname.

    1. Re: [Q-B-I] Shewell of Painswick
    2. I can't comment on the Shewell family, but I know from my own family that marriage by licence was not impossible for Quakers. Both my great-great grandfather James Pollard and his father Samuel married by licence. In both cases they were marrying non-Members; but in both cases - though local Friends disapproved - they retained their Membership. Both wives subsequently joined the Society. 1. ELIZABETH SIMS and JOHN HOLT STANWAY MARRIAGE
    2. Joy&Andrew
    3. Hi everyone, I only have one tenuous link to the Quaker faith which I am trying to prove. I have been told than an Elizabeth SIMS and John Holt STANWAY were married in 1828, I assume in Norwich Norfolk but an not sure of this. Her family were Quakers but as far as I know John's family was not. I have a possible sighting of John and Elizabeth on a ship to American in 1846. One of their children was named Abe. Which was a biblical type name which rings true. As I am in Australia I find it very difficult to search English records. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Joy Light - Melbourne Australia

    3. Thank you, Margaret, for drawing this to my attention. I have changed the setting for this, and hope it will now automatically reply to the list unless told otherwise. If anyone finds this is not happening correctly, please email me at QUAKER-BRITISH-ISLES-admin@rootsweb.com, and I'll see what I can do. Ben PS Margaret's Isabel (Burton) Binns is mine too, and there is at least one other subscriber already who would lay claim to her. 3. I found the reply to sender is not automatically replying to the list unless using a 'Reply to all'.
