In reading my gg-grandfather William Booth's 1877-78 diary written while he lived in Cowansville, Dunham and Shefford, he mentions selling his book in or to the Society. It seems he got funds to buy his first farm. Was it a lending institution or something one would buy shares in? I'm just curious and hope someone out there knows. In his diary he mentions some names of people from this area, as well as Montreal, so if anyone is interested I could do look-ups. Thank you, Christine Hi Christine, In Britain, what we call Trust Companies are called Building Societies, so the term might have been used the same way here in the 1870's. They are involved with real estate transactions, mortgages and loans, etc. I would be interested if by any chance there are Montle or McCarty entries from Stanbridge or Bedford, or Brady or Renihan in Dunham or Shefford.
