I've found them to be of use only for census films and often those are available at the LDS. If you have been doing US research with the censuses starting in 1790, you are due for a disappointment. The first census that is really available is the 1825 and it is not nominal and only lists head-of-household and head counts. The 1851 is the first nominal census and is very useful if you are researching in that timeframe. Simply ask your local librarian to order the 1851 county census from them. The 1825 information is probably best gotten through Marlene Simmons: http://www.virtuel.qc.ca/simmons/ and she charges a very reasonable fee for the data. > I'm researching Booths, Jones and Heatherington ancestors from 1800s > in Dunham, Shefford, West Shefford, Cowansville, and Farnham. Marlene has indexed a very large number of the records of there and it is the shortest distance between two points. When I visited the Stanstead Historical Society a couple of years ago, I noted that a high percentage of the books of information they had there were published by her. Always check to see if the LDS have films for towns/counties you are interested in by doing a Place Search at: http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp Also visit: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3500/et.html and the bulletin board at: http://www.stanstead-journal.com/mainframe.html? and: http://www.canadiana.org/cgi-bin/ECO/mtq for your surnames, towns, counties etc. The LDS also have the "Blue Books" on microfilm, "La Société De Généalogie Des Cantons De L'Est Inc., Sherbrooke, QC, Canada, Quebec: Births, Marriages, Deaths 1815-1879 District of St Francis from the Church Records of sixteen religious denominations, catholics not included." a very important resource for ET researchers. Researching in the ET is a little bit "different" :-) but a lot of fun.
