Hello all, I'm new to the list though I have "lurked" in the past! I have recently received some updated information regarding my grandmother and 4 great aunts, all of whom were British Home Children sent to Canada from Liverpool, Eng in 1888 and 1889. They were the daughters of Richard and Jane (ROUTLEDGE) CARRUTHERS. One son, John remained in England. It would seem that at least 4 of the girls were "distributed" throught the receiving home in Knowlton, QC. My grandmother (Elizabeth) was sent to Ontario, one sister (Frances) sent to Nova Scotia, another (Isabella) to Pointe au Chene>Lachute, PQ. Two of the sisters remained in the Eastern Townships: Mary Jane (Jenny) CARRUTHERS: b.30 May 1876, Liverpool 1888 living with Mrs F. Warden in Cowansville 1891 living with Mrs E Miltmore (?), Knowlton 1893 living with Mrs Dalton, Evelyn Grange, Richmond 1894 married to William SHELL "on the sly" 1899 apparently returned to England with her husband and 2 children. Living with her mother, Jane Routledge Carruthers PRUDEN. It is noted that William SHELL had relatives outside of London, ENG Margaret CARRUTHERS: b. 24 May 1879 1889 living with Mr John Ferns (?). Hemmingford, adopted 1889 living with Mrs Wm Stirrat (?), Dundee, adopted 1892 living with Miss Stewart, Cowansville, employed 1892 living with Mrs Little (?), Granby, employed 1893 living with Mrs. W E Jones, Richmond, employed 1895 - 96 working in "Refreshment Room" and the Phoenix Hotel, Richmond 1899 now married to a Mr. JUDGE, living in Richmond and has one child. I have yet to search for any Canadian information as I've just rec'd this information from Barnardos. It is my intention to check the 1901 census at least for Margaret. Can anyone suggest the best route for tracking down a marriage cert for these 2? Any other suggestions for me? Do any of these places, ie the Phoenix Hotel in Richmond, or surnames still exist in the Townships? Any help/direction appreciated! Jane Tait Soules ON, CAN
