    3. The Township of Stanbridge was first outlined in 1792 and was opened for settlement in 1801. Caleb Tree was the first to settle in the area called Stanbridge East. In 1889, the towns of Stanbridge-Station, Notre-Dame-de-Stanbridge and Saint-Ignace-de-Stanbridge were erected as municipalities separate from the Township of Stanbridge, and in 1890 the town of Bedford was erected as a separate municipality, leaving the present Township of Stanbridge (Stanbridge-East) a fraction of its original size but with the original name.
