You are right about these land grants anyone could apply for one about all you had to do was show up, or it seems. From the book The History of the Eastern Townships, Katherine Day says families came to the area for many reasons, persecution, loyalty, and some just for the free land. The British Government did set up a land claims office in Montreal for those who lost property or suffered in some way because of the war. These papers can probably be accessed through the archives. It seems that a lot of these settlers were poor and it was a way to get a head and have something of there own.
