Actually Ste-Marie d'Eli is a small "hameau" in Shefford County, Ely township. Mary in french is a woman's name hence it would be written with an "e" for Sainte. Since this is a popular religious name, there are 10 Ste Maries' in Quebec. In this case I am referring to communities and not parish names, although some parishes may have a church called Ste Marie + something else. If the ancestor was an English and Protestant, Shefford would be a good place to look rather than Beauce or Nicolet area which have other places of the same name. Believe you could find the place on the excellent map on Marlene Simmons' web.
