We had the discussion about names anglicised and this was interesting CHINGUACOUSY, Ontario A large portion of the early settlers of Chinguacousy were the children of the U. E. Loyalists, who came to Canada at the close of the American Revolution, and settled in the neigbourbood of Niagara, but there were many other classes of settlers. There is a singular circumstance connected with the name of one of the first settlers in Chinguacousy. Antoine Maisonneuf was a French Canadian from the neighbourhood of Montreal, who settled in Chinguacousy in 1820. He could talk English pretty well, but with a very pleasant French accent. The neighbours among whom he settled were quite unacquainted with the French language, and although they liked Antoine very well, they did not at all like his awful French name, and to please his neighbours Antoine allowed his name to be Anglicised to Anthony Newhouse; and with this name be lived to a good old age, and died respected, leaving several sons who are now in the County, all of the name of Newhouse. ----- Original Message ----- From: "bcomeau" <bcomeau@prodigy.net> To: <QC-ETANGLO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: October 20, 2000 10:21 PM Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Re: Root or Racine surname > Thank you to all who have written in trying to help me. > I seem to have searched all the info that you have sent > me and have come up with the wrong family. > Those at the following URL have all been found in > Swanton, Vt. > http://www.virtuel.qc.ca/simmons/ > I just have to get into Canada to find what I want, but > if the town I have on a death certificate is not to be found, > I do not know where else to turn. > > Betty > >
