I have obtained a very long 4 page hand written letter in difficult script dated February 9, 1850. After reading Gwen Rawlings book about the political times of Megantic County then, I realize that the area was being included in elections with great objections with settlers viewing it as a tax grab. I think in 1850 the outline of the megantic political area was from the southern border of Lotbiniere to south of Lake St Francis with Leeds being the headquaters of this district called ' Chaudiere. ' The letter is written to my gggrandfather Angus McDonald of Port Neuf, Quebec, by Charles AYLWIN who appears to the son of Thomas Aylwin and Susannah Cushing and brother to James and Thomas Cushing Aylwin [who became the Chief Attorney and Judge in Quebec in the 1850 - 1860s.] The letter outlines in detail how Angus McDonald should procure two small volumes that contain the complete voter's list of the last election, from Mr Aylwin's brother in law, Mr Bradly. [I wish I had those two small volumes!] The letter mentions others who may support Angus in his election bid: Charles Cambell, esquire of Halifax the father of Aylwin's friend young campbell, advocate Names that appear to be Mr. Samotte and Charles Prince or Primso Old Mr. Hale from Broughton The opponent Maguire who represents the french and irish protestants Supporters Mr. Layfield in Inverness, Mr Lloyd, William Hume, Matthew Iggins (?) of Leeds Mr George Hale, Grocer Quebec City John Hutchison, Leeds Mr Cobban, Leeds chairman of the lst annual council meeting of district at which endured a small riot as most of the area saw Arran Scots and Irish Protestants divided on all issues. Mr Lambly, returning officer John Crombie of Patterson Mills Andrew Stewart It is very hard to read and very little other info on the above people is stated. I hope someone may see a name that confirms a whereabouts of a family member! I wonder if my gggrandfather won the election, He was a Justice of the Peace in Sept 1852 in Port Neuf area! Julia Dalgleish Sauter, Saskatoon, Canada Searching Dalgleish, Rutherford & Heriot in Scotland Searching Dalgleish, Bell, Johnston & Aird in Montreal & Megantic County Searching Thackeray & McQuarrie & Kearney in Ontario........... To some it's just a hobby, to Me it's much more, I learn the joys and heartaches of those that went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept - and now, for me, They live again in spirit, around the FAMILY TREE.
