Hello Listers, Today I found a gem - quite by accident. On Nov 30, 1966 - The Granby Leader Mail (weekly newspaper then) published a special 75th Anniversary issue - containing some 58 pages.. & detailing the history of Granby & of the newspaper. On p. 2 under the heading "In 1891 , it did not take much to be in the news" - we read: Our genial Stationmaster Mr FB Farnsworth is getting his new home under completion. Mr James McKechnie is about to build on his lot on Water St. The house will cost in the neighbourhood of $ 5000. & will be finished inside with white pine. Mr A C Savage has put a plate glass in his dry goods store, which completely changed its appearance , making it one of the most handsome stores in town Mr George C Boyd, milkman, comes out with a new & very neat wagon. Business seems to be booming with Mr Boyd. ++++++++++++++++ On page 3 - under "The distinguished men who have guided the destinies of Granby " there are photos of past Mayors - Patrick Hackett, SHC Miner, AC Savage, Walter Bradford, Arthur Kent, PS Boivin, JH Leclere, James Irwin, Dr LA Lessard, E Duhamel, Hector Pare , JC Barr, PH Boivin, & PO Trepanier. Then follows a capsule sized biography - mostly their business contributions to the community-town. -- Not pictured - but included are John Horner - 3rd Mayor - & first citizen ; JC Cowie , stagecoach owner for routes between Granby & Chambly-- & -- between Granby & Stanstead. He also (with a brother ) - owned a carding mill. Edward Bradford became Mayor in 1864- was a foundry owner & merchant. On page 6 - there's a discussion about Palmer Cox (1840-1924) 4th son / Michael & Sarah (Miller) Cox - who were Scottish Pioneers who settled at South Ridge (Grranby) in 1834. Palmer became very famous as a writer. He's buried in Cowie St cemetery (Granby) . There is a photo of a huge field stone -- & the caption says Palmer Cox selected it himself to mark his grave. On page 9 - there is a short description of "the worst tragedy in Granby" - when the Miner bridge collapsed killing 11 people. Apr 21 1869 namely, Mrs Stephen Henderson-Campbell Miner (nee Jane Elizabeth Sargent) 28 yr; her dau Cora, 8 yr; & her Mother, Mrs Benj Sargent; Mrs Zephania Harvey (wife of a passerby who saved the life of a young Victor Rousseau - only surviver) , & Mrs Harvey's daughter, Sarah; Mrs John Bradford, her son Charles Arthur, & her dau Minnie; City Councillor Edwd B Gilmour & his son Eddy; Patrick Hackett former 1st Mayor of Granby; - It further says that some bodies weren't found for weeks. That until 1935 a group of friends & relatives or descendants of the victims commemorated the tragedy by assembling on the new bridge to throw a floral tribute in the Yamaska River. That's it for tonight -- Pennie
