This information came from the Richmond County Historical Society site under the "New for 2000" link @ http://www.interlinx.qc.ca/~e-dhealy/ The pioneers from New England who came to Richmond County, circa 1800, settled in the townships of Shipton, Melbourne, Windsor, Brompton, and Stoke. Others came to nearby Kingsey and Durham townships in Drummond County. The writings of Mrs. C. M. Day and Rev. Edward Cleveland illustrate the earliest family names which appear in Richmond County. In Shipton township, which was granted to Elmore Cushing and his associates on December 4, 1801, the following are some of the families who arrived by 1804 or soon afterward: Cushing, Barnard, Hastings, Wetherall, Lester, Brockus, Doying, Fessenden, Labonte, Steward, Steele, Dustin, Leet, Magoun, Clarke, Hill, Keyser, Perkins, Rice, Randlett, Chamberlin, Blunt, Cutting, Martin, Green, Gamelin, McLure, Tobyne, Clough, Richardson, Williamson, Daniels, Marstin, Fowler, Philbrick, Stimson, Stevens, Silver, Morrill, Lawrence, Flint, Brooks, Butler, Burroughs, Hall, Healy, Mathews, Higby, Willey, Bickford, Brainard, Smith, Ellison, Lewiston. The township of Stoke was granted to Jane Cowan, on February, 18, 1802. Some of her associates were: Cowan, Alexander, Woodworth, Lathrop, Wood, Honsinger, Campbell, Smead, Welsh, Dewar, Taylor. Windsor township saw Capt. Josiah Brown arrive about 1800. He was soon followed by a few other New England emigrants, notably: Frye, Webster, Thomas, Caswell, Baily, Moore. On April 3, 1805, the township of Melbourne was granted to Henry Caldwell and John Davidson and their associates: Bowen, Hamilton, Caldwell, Cannon, Davidson, Hennesy, Matthew, Lamon, Simpson, Donaldson, Ellison, Gallup, Gibson, Hunt, Hibbert, Hill, Lancaster, Miller, Mudget, Pierce, Patterson, Stickney, Stimpson. The township of Brompton came into being on November 27, 1801. Parts of this township were granted to William Barnard and his associates: Childs, Arms, Rice, Hayford, Wilcox, Bishop, Pierce, Bartlett, Knapp, Wakefield, Caswell, Hyde, Terry, Dorman Steele, Sherman, Ward, Bonny, Kee.
