I've read that the village of Hatley was originally called Charleston. Does anyone know when it became known as Hatley? Also, I've found marriage entries for the family I'm researching in the Church of England register books for Hatley in the 1820s to mid 1830s, but found no baptisms. Were there other churches in the area during this time period that the family could have used instead? The bulk of the family converted to Mormonism in the mid-1830s and migrated towards Utah, but I'm curious regarding the lack of baptismal records prior to their conversion. I'm researching the LEAVITT family of Hatley & Compton areas. Thanks kindly. Cheers, -- Laury Walkey (Miss) BC, Canada
Hello Laury, My Mother-in-law and her family (the Page/Paige family) lived in Hatley, but were baptized, etc., in St. John's Anglican Church in Eastman, Stanstead Co. That may have been because other members of the family lived in Eastman. Worth a try, anyway. There are many Leavitts in the Page family, but not in direct lineage to her family. Good luck! Hi Laury, Its me again. Since I have a LEAVITT ancestor I checked my Family Group Record and indeed my ancestor is the same Deacon John Leavitt as mentioned in Phyllis' book. I am descended from his first wife through their daughterElizabeth who married Samuel Judkins. None of their progeny migrated to Canada. My link to Hatley is the Little Family and the BEANs. My father was born in Hereford. Which one of John's children leads down to Nathaniel? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laury Walkey" <polgara@telus.net> To: <QC-ETANGLO@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 17, 2007 12:19 PM Subject: [QC-ETANGLO] Village of Hatley, Stanstead Co. > I've read that the village of Hatley was originally called Charleston. > Does anyone know when it became known as Hatley? > > Also, I've found marriage entries for the family I'm researching in the > Church of England register books for Hatley in the 1820s to mid 1830s, > but found no baptisms.
