Researching my Grandmother (paternal side) who was born in Quebec on 2nd December,1880. Her name was Mabel Grace GILIGAN and she appears on 1881 Canadian Census for Stanbridge,Missisquoi,Quebec aged 1 year and residing with the following: Edward GILIGAN,(56) -Married -Irish Origin - born Quebec -Labourer - Church of England Ester GILIGAN (34) -Married - English Origin -born Quebec -Methodist (presume wife of Edward) Mary GILIGAN (28) -single -English Origin -born Quebec -Church of England Edward GILIGAN (13) - English Origin -born Quebec -Church of England Eddy I GILIGAN (11) -English Origin -born Quebec -Church of England Mabel Grace GILIGAN (1) -- my Grandmother. Mabel Grace GILIGAN was a Nuresmaid to young children of a family called McVean who were living in Canada (Presumably Quebec) and when that family decided to return to Scotland, she accompanied them. At that time she was 14 years old(1894/5). I am attempting to discover when and how she travelled to Scotland -ship,dates etc. I understand Mabel Grace GILIGAN may have been illegitimate. Her mother was away from home and working in Quebec and she was apparently brought up by her Grandfather(Edward GILIGAN?) and a step Grandmother (Ester GILIGAN?). She had supposedly a sister but not known wherther older or younger but no sister shown on 1881 Census. Who were Edward(13) and Eddy I(11) then? I suspect that the only other female in the household - Mary GILIGAN - may have been the Mother. Mabel Grace GILIGAN, on her wedding Certificate in Scotland gives her Mother`s name as Mary SMITH ! Perhaps her Mother married a Smith after 18881 Census. I am keen to trace the Giligan family after 1881 Census - my Grandmother obviousely did not communicate with the family after coming to Scotland. Mabel Grace GILIGAN married a Gray and died in Scotland in 1966. Would anyone be able to provide information on the family. Was Stanbridge the home of the Giligan family? - have checked the 1911 Canadian Census but no mention of Giligan family in Stanbridge or anywhere else. Any assistance would be appreciated.
