Yesterday I spent some time going through the list of items held by the various historical societies in the Townships and discovered this item for GEORGE JOHNSTON who was my great grandmother LILLIE 'LILLA (HOPKINSON) SLEEPER's brother in law. He was married to her youngest sister VIOLET. I have quite a few photos he did of members of my family and he really was a wonderful photographer. He and his wife eventually moved to Worcester, MA., for a time and later to Fitchburg, MA. They had one daughter VEDA who was b. about 1900 in Sherbrooke. Thought this might be of interest to the list. TABLE DES ARCHIVES DE L'ESTRIE GEORGE JOHNSTON 1 SHS : (190-) 5 photographs e-mailed SHS ([email protected] ) 10-18-04 (Société d'histoire de Sherbrooke) =============== Reply from: La Société d'histoire de Sherbrooke 10-19-04 By now, we have around 26 photographs shoot by George Johnston. An interesting one shows him when he photographed himself on a photograph during a Sugar Party with a group of friends. On this photograph he lied down on the ground with, in his hand, an air bulb release joint with a cable hidden by snow. On another one, we suppose (we are not 100 % sure) it is George Johnston with eleven members of the Sherbrooke SnowShoe Club with the same mechanism hidden by the shoulder of another member of the group. As George Johnston was a famous photographer in the City of Sherbrooke, great families used his services for shooting photographs of their children. We have that kind of photographs. He was also the friend of some great Sherbrookers as E.B. Worthington (one of our late mayors and a member of the Sherbrooke SnowShoe Club), Frederick James Sangster (a printer, owner of the Page-Sangster Printing Co.). He also shoot photographs for F.N. McCrea who was a member of Parliament. If you need photographs, we charge 5 Canadian dollars for a scan sent by e-mail. If you live in Canada, we have to add GST. If you live in Quebec, we also have to add the Provincial Tax. I hope you can understand what I wrote. I have to improve my English-speaking and writing. I thank you for the confidence you have in our Society and I am waiting news from you.
