Friends of the List: Once again I've decided to give this list a try in terms of my search for information about the Parsons family who are buried in the Cochrane-Sleeper Cemetery near Compton. I am trying to follow leads which indicate the possibility that one of these people (Mary Parsons) may be my "lost" great-great grandmother -- though that is far from certain. I have several questions: 1. Is the Cochrane-Sleeper Cemetery an "active" cemetery -- that is, is it still used for burials? If so, who is in charge of it, and might they have some record of the burials from past years? 2. What is the history of this cemetery? Other than the list of burials that is available in several places on the Internet, I have been unable to find any information about it. 3. If the cemetery is no longer active, where might I find some record regarding its burial records? (A year or so ago I had contact with a gentleman from the Compton Genealogical Society, and though he made some general suggestions, he did not seem to know how to go about such a search.) To quickly re-cap my family search, my great-grandfather (Joseph Parsons) migrated to Quebec (no specific information as to exactly where in Quebec) from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland with his parents, George and Mary Hunt Parsons, in 1858. In 1859 Mary, while in Quebec, gave birth to a daughter, Agnes. Sometime between 1859 and 1864 my great-grandfather (Joseph) and his father (George) move to Kingston, Ontario, but Mary and Agnes are not with them. I do know what happened to Agnes. She grew up, and later married in Toronto. George, my great-great grandfather, died in Kingston, and he is buried there. Joseph, my great-grandfather became a schooner captain and operated a business in Kingston. He later moved his family from Kingston to Detroit at the turn of the century. I suspect that Mary may have died wherever they were in Quebec after the birth of her daughter Agnes. The Mary, listed among the Parsons burials in the Cochrane-Sleeper Cemetery fits that pattern (died in 1861). If so, that probably means that the others are members of the same family. These are the Parsons listed as being buried in the cemetery: * Parsons, Dora -1869 * Parsons, Mary -1862 * Parsons, Lydia -1873 * Parsons, Joseph -1859 Any suggestions? Peace! Don Donald H.
