I have Thomas Ruiter's obituary, although it doesn't provide much: "At Ruiter's Corner on the 29th of March, Mr. Thomas Ruiter Sen. aged 79 years 10 months. Mr. Ruiter was a native of Caldwell's Manor P.Q. and with his parents came to this township in early childhood. For nearly three quarter's of a century he lived on the farm of which he died. The large assembly of friends and neighbors who met at the funeral attested the respect in which he was held in this community generally." In 1883 John DUNN is living in West Charleston, Vermont, (address is Road 48, Island Pond, Vermont), listed as a farmer with 125 acres of land. Also appears to be leasing a farm in Derby, Vermont from a Horace RUITER, 108 acres but only milking 10 cows. (Source: Childs County Gazetteer/Directory, dtd 1883, Tom Dunn) Horace RUITER is listed in the 1880 Census for Charleston, VT, page 24, as a 57 year old dry goods merchant. Any connection here? Horace Ruiter was the grandson of Capt. John Ruiter and Sarah Fyler, through their son Samuel Fyler Ruiter. Horace died in April 1886 in Beebe Plain. He is my 1st cousin five times removed. I don't know too much more about him, though.
